Ok, that was totally uncalled for. Monday morning the Mayor of NO was still trying to decide if he should order a mandatory evacuation....knowing that his city is below sea level. And when the order was given, why didn't the Gov. have the National Guard down there helping with the evacuation? I didn't see any, I could have missed it, but I didn't see any.

It is almost impossible for this mayor to have a clear overview of the conditions in his city..it is under water..and there is almost zero ability to communicate..he is getting his info from reporters. We have a DEPT OF HOMELAND SECURITY, FEMA and a FEDERAL GOVT to oversee exactly this type of situation when cities and states themselves are overwhelmed.

As to provisions kept in our homes, if flooding like this occurs (don't many os us live near the coast or a dam or a river?) or tornado or earthquake, those provisions are worthless.

In the event of nuclear radiation....welll....I would pray the if the 9-11 attacks had also released radiation through a dirty bomb, and NYC was unable to help itself (with its neighboring states) as much as it did, the President of the UNITED STATES would take FEDERAL control.

I have to say, this every man/every state for themselves mentality is disheartening. If I am ever in need REGARDLESS of the cause, I pray you would help my family as I would yours.

This is true, however, I still don't understand why the mayor waited until just about 24 hours before the storm hit to order an evacuation? Monday morning when I came into work he still hadn't decided to order it or not. And as I stated before, he knows his city is below sea level so why wait?

If I was ever in a situation like that then I would, to the best of my abilities, help not only my family, but yours and anyone else's that needed it.

You mean to say that they've not even voted on disaster relief yet!!! :worried: :confused3

Just to clarify this... President Bush has been using discretionary funds to handle relief efforts thus far -- so there was not a great need to get it done within hours rather than days. Congress was not in session, so most were not in the DC area. It wouldn't help at all to rush back and get it passed 2 days earlier -- it'd be exactly the same result in New Orleans and other devastated areas. The only difference is the pool of money from which the relief effort comes.

I understand that people are angry and frustrated with events. But I would advise everyone to direct their anger and frustration in a constructive fashion. Who is to blame for the situation in New Orleans? Who cares at this point. It needs to be fixed as quickly as possible and bickering over which politician should shoulder the blame is pretty much irrelevant IMO.

I saw Bush's speech in the Rose Garden a few minutes ago right before he left for the tour. What I saw was a man who seemed to have no grasp on the situation. He showed little leadership and very little handle on the situation. I'm incredibly disappointed in him.

That's odd, because I saw a man that said the current system isn't working, and that he wants to get with the leadership on the ground to see what they need and to assure them that they'll get it.

I guess it all depends on your predisposition. :)

Oh, puh-leeze

I'm just as thoroughly disgusted with anyone who keeps bashing President Bush. Like YOU could do a better job? Yeah, right.

Actually, I think I could. Compared to job he's doing, it wouldn't be that hard.

I totally agree with your statement.
I know right now is not the time to attack the President, but what on earth is going on?
Why, whenever something big happens he calls his dad and Bill Clinton?
He seems confused to me.
I know, I know, he is our president and is trying.
I did not vote for him but am trying to be supportive of these efforts to help people in Louisiana.

Bless those people waiting for help. I hope the Pres. and his people take food and water when they go.
Also an OB-GYN for those two very pregnant women I saw on the Today show this morning.

P.S. This was just my two cents...please don't flame me for my comments.

Yea I know, George W. Bush is Satan. He was in the Garden of Eden and he is the reason for every ill that has ever befallen man.

Get a grip folks. Calm down and take more drugs. Keep your heads up because he will not be President much longer and then you can start bashing the next guy who's in office and blaming them for every ill that has ever befallen man.

As usual there doesn't seem to be much in the way of open minds, reason, or logic going on when all some of you can say is that Bush is the devil.

Not a shred of intellectual honesty. Not one!

What's THAT supposed to mean? I voted for Bush and have supported and defended him in the past. This is the first time I am even saying these things so I have no "predispositions" thank you very much. I am disappointed in what I view as a strong lack of leadership.

I think it's time to call some of the National Guard troops out of Iraq and back here where we need them.

Bush is pretty pathetic. He's out touting his medicare reform the day after the storm hit. He should be on the groun, knee deep in water PERSONALLY hadning out food and water. He was MUCH better during 9/11 but then again, it wasn't as dangerous to be in the city was it? Commander in chief my butt.

I am also dissappointed in the people of NOLA. looting, rioting, and raping. Those people are a waste of human life and should be shot on site.

The Mayor is overwhelmed, the governor is helpless.

SOMEBODY has to step in. The president can't do anything until asked??? That's a crock. If Guiliani was in charge...oh if only...(heard he's running with McCain in the next election...looks like I'm turning Republican).

Exactly. I am praying for everyone-people of the devastation, aid volunteers, rescue officials, mayor, congress, and President Bush.

I think the majority of people in NOLA are NOT doing these vicious things.

Pretty sad when outher countries even Canada which could be in the area in a matter of a day are being told to hold off and wait. We have much needed supplies for the area and the people but are told not to come yet. What the hell are they waiting for I am sorry but when the things needed are available even if it is coming from someplace else why hold it up why not get it to the area and get relief to the people and the people working there that need it.

OTTAWA (CP) - Canada will send the United States any help needed in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Prime Minister Paul Martin told President George W. Bush on Thursday.

"If you need help, just ask and we'll be there," he told Bush in a 15-minute phone call that was to have been a sharp discussion of the softwood lumber dispute but instead became a call of sympathy and condolence. Martin said Bush didn't ask for help, but predicted he will.

"They're in the process of trying to put all the co-ordination together and they're going to take us up on it," the prime minister said in Edmonton.

"They're trying to determine their needs right now."

White House spokesman Scott McLellan said a number of countries have offered aid.

"We are open to all offers of assistance from other nations, and I would expect that we would take people up on offers of assistance when it's necessary."

The Canadian military put troops on standby and prepared to load a ship with gear and equipment that could be useful in the aftermath of the great storm that wrecked much of the American Gulf Coast and devastated New Orleans.

The Canadian Red Cross was sending a team of 100 to 200 experienced disaster workers to bolster the American Red Cross staff in the region.

Martin, attending provincial centennial celebrations in Edmonton, told a sympathetic crowd of his talk with Bush.

"I expressed our condolences and our sympathies and I confirmed Canada stands with those who have suffered so much in Katrina's wake.

"I said on your behalf that, if you need help, just ask and we'll be there, now and in the weeks and months ahead. That we will do whatever we can for as long as it takes to help our neighbour and our friend deal with this terrible, terrible tragedy."

Gen. Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defence staff, said he spoke with his American counterpart, Gen. Dick Myers, to offer assistance.

He said Myers thanked him, but said the Pentagon is still analyzing what is needed.

Hillier said the military's Disaster Assistance Response Team or DART, which can provide medical care, power and clean water, could head south on 48 hours notice.

He said Canada could provide transport planes or helicopters, electrical generators, water purification systems, small boats for navigating the waterways of the region and engineering equipment and expertise.

He said his staff are planning to load a selection of such gear about a warship to be ready in the event Washington asks for help.

It's best to be prepared, he said.

"We want to help. We believe that's what being friends and allies is all about."

In September 1992, after hurricane Andrew struck Florida, a Canadian naval supply ship was sent in with more than 250 people who helped in rebuilding.

Suzanne Charest of the Canadian Red Cross said a team of 100 - perhaps as many as 200 - volunteers is being assembled for relief work.

"We're recruiting only from our existing pool of experienced people," she said.

The workers will help with the logistics of moving and supporting relief workers. They will assist with family services among the homeless and displaced and in feeding people in some of the 270 shelters being run by the American Red Cross.

"They are providing 500,000 hot meals a day in conjunction with the Southern Baptists," Charest said.

The Red Cross is also collecting cash donations for the relief work.

She said the American Red Cross estimated its operations will cost more than $130 million.

"That's without having done a full assessment."

Foreign Affairs says people who wish to send help should contribute to a reputable aid agency, such as the Red Cross.

Canada has also offered to open up its national emergency stockpiles if needed. They contain portable hospital units, complete with beds, blankets and pharmaceuticals.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has spoken to David Wilkins, the American ambassador, to offer help.

The province's health ministry has offered an emergency medical team and various hydro operations have offered teams skilled in restoring power. Hundreds of thousands are without electricity in the region.

Pretty sad when people are wasting energy bashing the President instead of focusing that strength on helping the hurricane victims.

So what do you think of the state government in LA? Do you think they should keep their jobs?

I am sorry but I have to say that when Florida was hit last year by Hurricane after Hurricane after Hurricane. Jeb Bush kept his head on straight and kept this State in order. He had control of the situation and got relief as quickly as possible to the area that needed it.

Can the same be said for NO's goverment?

What is the criteria for impeachment? :confused3

I bet years from now, Bush will be remembered as the worst Prres. in history! :earseek:

I just felt like saying it, because I'm declaring war on him. I'm writing letters and I don't care if I end up with a big fat FBI file. He is the worst ever and this is discraceful!!!! People dying of thirst in the US. Unforgivable. Oh, we can send troops to freaking Iraq, but we can't get help to fellow Americans.

Have patience, he says, while they are literally dying of thirst.

I just got alot more politically active.

Auntpolly....you are so cute. I read your post and I already know that you are really a caring person. I am worried about those in the disaster area as well. Could be you or I just as easily.
The President should be more understanding and cognizant of what those folks must be feeling right now and stop asking them to be patient. What an idiot. Make me a big fat FBI file too, Big whoop.
It is my opinion that if you are not wealthy, this President doesn't care what happens to you. He has shown this over and over again.
I am not a Bush (Sr. or Jr.) fan either, never have been, never will be.)
