I have been given Imitrex for migraines & for me it's useless.
In fact it gives me more symptoms like pressure in my head & dizziness.
Anyone had luck with this medication?
What do you take for migraines?

I took Imitrex and it made me feel worse than the migraine. For me, what I use is Excedrin migraine if I can take it early enough, or Relpax. Relpax helped me a lot. Actually, the best product I tried was something I got from my aunt when I was staying with her in Israel, don't know what it's called, and probably not legal in the US but it worked so amazingly well.

Do you take the shot or the daily pill?
I used to get migraines (but then got divorced and never had another one) and I had to take the shots. I had suicidal pain :guilty: The shots helped but they did weird thigns to my chest and my freak out buttons. I actually had to be driven to the doc everytime so I could get the shot there to be observed. Nothing else ever worked. I'm sorry you have them.

Try Excedrin Migraine (or extra strength, same product) with 4 t. of childrens liquid Benadryl. I dont think the pills work as good as the liquid. This combo never killed them, but dulled them.

The pills & thank you......

I get some odd feelings in my chest as well.

WOW- I cant believe that Imitrex didn't work, it works for me but i hate the way it makes me feel, feels like my heart is coming out of my cheat.

But I use Relpax and it works great with no side effects. I get the 40mg and cut them in half and it still works, plus another reason i cut in half is because its so expensive, with my insurance its still 55.00 co-pay.

I have had headaches for 20 yrs and i just started going to a chiro and so far so good, i went 4 days start without a headache.

Goodluck,
Brooke:)

I use Imitrex. Sometimes I can get by with 1/2 pill, and it works, but I usually get rebound headaches. In fact, I've been taking it the last two days. My migraines are hormone related.

Imitrex didn't touch my headaches either. For me Maxalt worked. I know now that the cause of my headaches was a hormone imbalance. Maybe different causes have different successes with various meds? It seems logical, but I'm not a medical professional.

You could ask your doctor if Frova might work for you...it seems to do well with hormonal headaches. Topamax works pretty well for a lot of people as a preventative migraine medication. I found that Imitrex nasal spray was much more effective than the pills for myself as well as my daughters.

Of course medications have different affects for different people.

Different migraine meds work different for everyone. The first one I was put on is the one that works the best for me. Unfortunately, it's not the cheapest :( However, as any migraine sufferer can tell you, it's worth it to cough up the money and pay for something that works!

Anyways, I use Zomig. Also, for the longest time I was on a 5mg dose. Recently I switched to a 2.5mg dose because I started a preventative that works wonders. If you get them frequently (I'm talking at least once/wk) look into Topamax. I was getting them about every other day and I'm down to once/wk. It's great. I did try 2 other preventatives before I tried Topamax. I tried a low dose anti-depressant and a low-dose low blood pressure medication, neither of those worked. I've tried Imitrex and Amerge. Neither did anything for me at all untill I took at least twice the dose each time that was recommended. Sometimes I took more. So that's not good. I usually start by taking Excedrin migraine when I feel one coming on. Most of the time that's all I need.

DH has suffered from migraines for as long as I've known him and probably even before that. When he feels one coming on, he takes Excedrin Migraine. He keeps some in a little keychain pill case he found at the drugstore. If that doesn't work (and it usually does) he has an Imitrex pen (similar to an epipen) that he can shoot himself in the leg with. He's never had to use it, fortunately.

Did anyone have hair loss with Topamax?

No, I don't have hair loss, but I do have memory loss. :scared:

Plus tingling in hands and feet and other side effects that I can't think of right now (probaby due to the memory loss :rotfl: ).

Imitrex did not work for me. I couldn't take Topomax because I had really bad side effects like numbness to the point of doctors thinking I was having strokes. Maxalt works well for me. I also am on Inderal which is used as a preventative. It does really well, I do not have migraines near as often as I did.

I had to use a combination of Imitrex injection and fioricet. The imitrex shot worked, but it left me with that strange chest feeling and an intense heaviness in my arms. Like with everything else, I am useless about 5 hours after taking something for a migraine. I just have to sleep it off.

I tried many other meds for migraines. Maxalt definitely comes to mind. Did nothing for me. Like others have said, it seems to be a case by case situation and not every migraine/body is the same.

I use maxalt. It works amazing with no side effects, as long as I take it at the very beginning of the signs. For me the beginning signs is nausea. Good luck with finding a med that works.

Actually, I think it is Deepakote that is worse for hair loss. I had no hair loss on topamax, but when we added the Depakote, then my hair really really started coming out.

My migraines were so bad, I was spending hosital time. Finally found out I have nerve damage in my neck which causes it. When to a pain specialist who injectioned my two nerves in my neck with pain killers....pain GONE...GONE...for months. After my last surgery, though, had to go back since I had migraine pain in the hospital, but again, pain went away. I still have slight head pain and am on all of the same medication as before, but none of those really bad migraines that just make you wish you could chop your head off.

I have been on Imitrex for about 5years now...its the only thing that gets rid of the really bad headaches..

A PP mentioned half a pill of Imitrex..you are NOT supposed to split them...it even says it on the package...if you need less, see your dr about getting a lesser dosage..

I also agree with another PP, Imitrex makes the pain go away..but the other side effects, can be rough, especially if I am unable to lie down...because of being at work or something.

Also, with Topamax...another lovely side effect was the change to the taste buds...and making all soda taste flat...:crazy2:
