I'm thinking about getting some help to rent my points-Good or Bad Idea?

For the first time in 12 years we have some points that we aren't going to be able to use. I really don't want to deal with a bunch of phone calls and I never done this before so I won't have any references. I found out about www.dvcrequest.com and I've been checking them out. Has anyone either rented points from him or let him rent their points? I'm just trying to understand what risks I'd be taking and if it's worth it to rent a few points.
I'd appreciate any information anyone can give me.
Thanks in advance.:dance3:

First, just curious how much you get per point. Second, it sounds like you still have to make the reservation in your name then change it ,(three way call). Honestly just go down to the rent/trade board. Check-out what people are looking for in a rental or point trade. We have rented our points once and it was easy.

If it is who I think it is, you actually add him as an associate member on your account....than he can do all the leg work. Some people have expressed concerns about giving someone else access to their membership, but I haven't heard any negatives.

Maybe you could do a points for transfer. Would be a little less time consuming.

Good suggestion. I don't want to deal with the hassle of renting points out, either. If I have excess points in a year I'd prefer transfering them to a fellow member. I've done that and it's worked well.

How many points are you renting?? When you are only renting 200 pts or so, it's fast and easy to do the renting yourself. As noted by others, 1 or 2 transfers, and you're done. One year I rented all our points for two years all in the space of 2 months, and that was nearly 2000 pts, which was way too hard. I would never do that again! That might be worth hiring someone to help you, if you have a large number of points. Ordinarily, though, you could do the rental yourself, which can be handled thru emails.:)

Yes, It's the one where he becomes an associate on your account. I would get $10/pt. That's why I wanted to know if anyone has done this before. I guess that any way you do it, you have to trust someone for a period of time.

It's not alot of points, about 133. I read on the rent/trade board about transfering, and the point was made several times that DVC states you should not be compensated for a trade. Obviously people are paid for those points. Maybe I should try that first. You all seem to have had good experiences with your renting/transfering.

Thanks for all of your comments.

The site in question is so much more convenient than a direct transfer, as you don't have to do all the ringing and checking yourself. If I have to pay him $4 per point so that I don't have to spend my life on the phone to Member Services, then that's great - I live in the UK and it's not the easiest thing in the world to get through, and obviously there's a time difference.

I guess my only concern is the trust factor - if the forum admins *** out the name of the website then how are we supposed to learn from our Disboard friends whether or not we can trust this person? Surely reviews of a Disney-related service should be acceptable?

Frankly, even if ********** was my best friend, I would NEVER put him or anyone else on my contract as an associate. Just not something I would do for anyone other than family. If you only have 133 points to deal with, it shouldn't be that much of a hassle, and why not get $12-$14 a point instead of $10? It would take more than a little trust for me to add anyone to my contract for all kinds of legal reasons.

What ringing and checking? For a direct transfer to another member, it took me all of 5 minutes on the phone to MS to call to give them the instructions. WAY easy.

Doesn't an associate member have live at the same address as the owners?

No, an associate member can be anyone. Basically, they have the right to make reservatioins, cancel reservations, bank, borrow and transfer your points. Basically it is like having someone to manage your points for you.

They are not responsibile for the dues, they can not sell the contracr, and they don't get a membership card.

It absolutely it NOT something I personally would be comfortable with, except for someone I trust completely.

With the rumors that Disney is cracking down on commercial renting - there is no way I'd make a major commercial renter an associate member on my contracts!!!! Yikes!

Well, add THAT to my list of why I wouldn't too!

I'm with the majority. There is no way I would add anyone as an associate to my membership unless they were a VERY close family member.

Usually, when something is blocked in this manner the problem is one of two things -- it's either information which is not supposed to be published (like the MS phone number), or the person/company being mentioned has violated DIS policies. If you have a question about a specific person or company, you should PM a mod and ask them why the info is **** out.

The reason is NOT to deprive DIS members of valuable information.

Me three, or ten...whatever.

In the first place, I would not give someone control over important aspects of my account. I assume the person in question is the most honest, reputable person on the planet, he's still not getting a key to my account. No offense...

And secondly, I can't possibly think of a more clear indication of "commercial renting" than contracting with a commercial rental broker to rent your points. If that is not commercial renting, I just don't know what is. If I was MS, all sorts of alarm bells would go off, and a letter from the Mouse's lawyers would be forthcoming. Personally, I don't care to be on the Naughty List.

There are people here who rent, and there are people who don't. I have no quarrel with people who rent, and I would never want to lose the opportunity to rent if I choose to.

But I would submit that if renting is too much hassle for someone (it IS too much hassle for me), maybe the best strategy is not renting. Just a thought.
