Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

Wow, you're over it? Too much effort to watch or scroll by if you don't want to watch a video on Facebook? For those of you who are over it. And the OP I challenge you to watch this video, in its entirety about 7 minutes. About Peter Frates and how this all got started. And then tell me how you are over it. It's amazing how people can be so self centered that they can poo poo something that is making such a difference. No One is forcing you to participate or donate, but to whine and complain about it? Give me a break. Seriously watch this video. Then tell me how you feel. This man was diagnosed at 27 years old. Extortion? Please. Exaggerate much? People will always find something negative, even with something so positive. No one is making you participate or donate. But don't begrudge those that do. One person can make a difference. Mr Frates will leave behind this legacy. http://espn.go.com/boston/story/_/id/11366772/in-als-fight-pete-frates-message-loud-clear-ice-bucket-challenge
With all do respect I could
Care less why it got started. If someone wants to donate or volunteer then that's awesome. If someone wants to act like a fool and force others to watch that's another.

Sorry, but I don't understand why you use the word "force". I assume you are using this definition - make (someone) do something against their will. How is posting something on Facebook making you do something against your will? If you are referring to having to watch it - just scroll, turn away, delete (use upper right arrow on Facebook). I just don't understand how is anyone being "forced" to watch.

No one is "forcing" anyone to do anything technically but by nominating and tagging others in FB, people feel obligated I guess?? Although the person being nominated could literally just ignore the "challenge" and move on.

I was finally "challenged" today, I politely (smugly) responded and told my nominator that they should know me better than to tag me in something like this and that I would NOT be dumping any ice water on my head nor donating money to the ALS charity. I won't get into any specifics but for anyone that cares please look up the "ALSA" on guidestar.com and see for yourselves why these big time charities are pretty close to useless ... and I know it's not just them, it's all of them!

Anything that raises money or awareness of ALS is fine by me.

I teach middle school and the kids were all talking about the challenge and wanted to know about ALS. There is a whole new generation who is now familiar with the disease because of the challenge. These kids had never even heard of ALS

If you don't like it don't do it.

I will PROUDLY act like a fool in way that causes no harm to myself or others for a good cause! Although I see nothing foolish about this, I see good clean fun.

And I will reiterate, please stop using hyperbolic words like force, no one is forcing you to watch.

I'm guessing that ship has sailed. The one about acting foolish that is. I think making a big stink about being "forced" to do something that is lighthearted in nature and for a good cause seems a but foolish. I'm confused by why you think you are being forced? Did someone threaten you? If so, you should probably call the police, because it sounds like way beyond an ice bucket challenge. Did you watch that video?

Unfortunately, he has declined. I'm not even an American citizen but I love him but I am disappointed that he declined. If he has time to go on talk shows, he should make time to do this.

George W Bush did it. I don't think he meant to, he was writing the check, but Laura Bush snuck up behind him and nailed him with the ice water. :lmao:

I didn't read the whole thread before I posted it. If I don't post when I see the post I want to respond to, I'll forget about it. Old age, you know...

It was set up. George knew he was getting dumped on.

Thanks for suggesting that! I just did. Gold level exchange and all check marks on guide star and four stars on charity navigator.

So this challenge has raised tens if millions of dollars for an organization that is highly ranked by two of the most reputable charity watchdogs. That's awesome!!

Don't participate if you don't want, but I cAnt imagine why you'd feel smug about it.

As for being 'forced' to participate. If anyone's forcing you, you should really get better friends. Heck I did participate and I've still only watched three videos in total. It's really not hard to just ignore and scroll right by.

I'm getting a kick out of watching this whole thing. I haven't been nominated and doubt I will be because I am not on FAcebook much at all. Only to read, not to post! :)

However, you are the first person I have seen to bring up useless charities and I believe that unfortunately not one dime will help cure ALS. There is prevention for this particular disease but no one will ever hear of it.

Please tell.

I would love more information on this. I looked it up, and I can see that there has been at least one study that found as association between intake of caroteniods (found in bright red, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables). However, I believe that there only a correlation has been found, not causation.

This challenge isn't like the "what color is your bra" ones or the no make-up selfies. This challenge has made $22 million for ALS research. Do it or don't do it, but to pitch a fit about it is really silly.

I am willing to support anything that will raise awareness and money for this cause.

I don't get paid for anything, not sure what you're talking about or where you get your information ... guidestar was setup so that people could look up a particualr charities information before making any donations to said charities to see exactly where their money is being funnelled.

Today's numbers:

41.8 million raised compared to 2.1 million in the same period last year.

739,275 new donors

:cool1::cheer2::thumbsup2::yes::

For some reason I could not view the video posted above but I read the transcript...but the line, next week you will go back to the cat videos and Let It Go singalongs, and you now what they are right, I am not a fan of cats and the Let it go things were getting tiresome, but some people like all that JUST like some people are liking this Ice Bucket Challenge, so when I see a another cat video I dont run here to post I am so over cat videos, I dont post smug replys on people's walls and leave mean comments on their posts like I have seen people do. I scroll past, it is so simple! I suggest that for those "so over" the Ice Bucket Challenge because unfornutately those suffering are not "over" it, their medical hell has just begun.
