Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

Frankly, I don't understand negative sentiments regarding this. This challenge was a stroke of genius that has increased giving by what would have seemed an impossible amount.

Usually tragedies prompt big bumps in giving so to me it's fun to see people giving with laughs instead of tears.

Oh and I got challenged last night, I would have elected to only give but it was my sweet fun loving niece who issued the challenge so I'll be the fun aunt and do both. The video will make her happy.

I love the thought that people are giving with "laughs instead of tears". What a perfect way to sum this up!

My brother declined my challenge...ok fine whatever...but he used the excuse that he did not want others to take on challenges that could hurt them or promoted reckless behavior and then two seconds later posted a picture of people smashing cars in the name of sports....that was completely hypocritical to me. Cant step outside yourself and you claim this high and mighty reason but it is ok to smash property in the name of "fun"

I think its hard for some people to decline it without feeling like they look mean spirited.

Here's why I am annoyed:

I got called out by three different people. I declined, explaining that I am simply not going to pour ice water over myself period and that -- fun fact -- I actually do give for ALS and have for over 20 years.

The response I got was post after post from all 3 people saying I was a bad sport, that I didn't know how to have fun, that I should have a younger outlook, that I didn't support ALS. Basically, I got insulted. Also that quote unquote:

"You are missing the point of the challenge which was to have fun."
"It doesn't count if you donate but don't make a video."

Over the weekend I read that ALS has received 11 Million dollars because of this challenge. The Boston College Alumni started it to honor a former Baseball player for the school who is now in a wheelchair because of the disease. We in NY might have increased awareness, since Lou Gehrig had the disease, and many people formerly called ALS "Lou Gehrig Disease".

If you are not interested in this particular disease, please don't knock the people trying to help others. Just do what you want to do, or ignore it.

I just watched the SportsCenter video below about Pete Frates, the BC alum referenced by DisneyBelle99, it's amazing to see just how much awareness and money this has brought to ALS.

So you're annoyed at your 3 friends and their comments and not at the "challenge" itself? Or are you annoyed at everyone partaking in it and posting about it?

You would have been a lot better off if you'd just ignored the challenge. Why did you feel the need to decline, and worse yet, try to make others feel bad because YOU have donated for years and years? (Which is awesome, of course, but part of the purpose of the challenge is the fact that over 300,000 NEW donors have donated to ASLA in the last three weeks).

I would ignore it if someone called me out. Just like I ignore requests from other charities if I choose not to participate. I certainly do not begrudge anyone else from participating or bringing attention to a terrible disease that had vey little support prior to this challenge.

I think that it is very easy to move past a post on FB if you don't have any interest, and I think it is not hard to simply ignore any challenge. I do not understand why folks get their bloomers in a bunch over this.

Very rational and understandable.

It seems clear that he or she is annoyed at the attitudes of the 3 friends.

For all those saying that they wont, cant whatever pour ice over their head..why? barring some medical condition why cant you do it? That is the part I dont get. Some people act so high and mighty and indignant about the whole process. It is water, cold water, you get wet, if you can, jump in a pool after, or grab a towel. It is not that big of a deal. Some people act like this is some horrific thing people are being challenged to do. It is actually quite simple hence why it has caught on

I haven't been called out on this (Great thing about having very few FB friends) and if I did it or not would honestly depend on the temperature outside (It got down to 45 degrees here this morning!)

However those in my circles that have done it had no problem with people declining and doing the donation. My nieces Dad did that saying he didn't understand what good dumping water over himself would do for ALS and he is pretty sure the $100 bucks would be more useful. Actually most people commended him for this and noted that many of those doing the ice bucket were forgetting that they were still supposed to donate a few bucks.

Adapting an often-used line from another poster...this isn't an ice-bucket-challenge problem, it's a friendship problem.

Once again most people I know are doing both. The dumping of ice is the gimmick to pull you in. If I just made a video and said, Hi I am Mkrop please donate money for ALS, most people would say ok maybe, or watch it and move on, not actually donating and the whole campaign would taper off. But by doing something silly or cute when the kids do it, than it catches on and people want to see their friends, family, coworkers, favorite celeb or sports star step away from what is comfortable and have fun with it.

ALS I am sure has made TONS of videos over the years asking people to help, some have garnish donations, some have not, just like every charity out there. Nothing has caputred the country/world's attention like this.

Social media is a great tool if used properly to raise awareness, educate, and bring people together. That is what the Ice Bucket Challenge has done, and THAT is why dumping the bucket over yourself is important.

No one owes anyone an explanation about why they may not want to do this.

I know no one owes me an explanation which is why I didnt quote anyone in particular. I was hoping someone could explain why though because I dont see what the big deal is in participating. I was hoping that one of the people here who said there is no way whatsoever they would dump a bucket of ice water on themselves could give me some insight as to why.:confused3 That is all. If they dont want to answer then they can ignore my question, simple as that.

Because they don't want to would be my guess.

I bet it really is that simple.

Seriously, people are ANNOYED at others raising awareness and money for an absolutely awful disease?! Having seen a customer, who was an absolutely gorgeous woman, fight against this disease for years before dying a painful death from it, and the impact it had on her amazing husband and daughter, I am disgusted that people would complain about having to scroll past a few videos on Facebook.

It is just starting to catch on in Australia; a lot of football (as in Aussie Rules) executives and players have done it after it was announced that a former coach of one a team has been diagnosed, and a popular breakfast TV host did it live too. $10,000 has reportedly been donated in the last week, which is 10x more than normal for this time of year (as charity donations are tax deductible they tend to slow down a lot after people do their taxes in June/July). There are two factors that I think might stop it from becoming as popular here: firstly, it is winter; and secondly, ALS is known in Australia as Motor Neuron Disease, meaning people are even less likely to have heard of ALS and might also struggle to find where to donate.

Right?? Only on the Dis will you find people annoyed at others for doing something good. :rolleyes1

Is anyone actually annoyed that there is an effort to raise money for ALS? I doubt it. I think that the annoyance is in the attitude of some of the challengers, and in their response when the challenge is declined.

By the way, when did it go from a bucket of ice, to being a bucket of cold water? The first I heard it was ice, period. The most recent videos show people dumping just water over their heads. I don't see me participating in the challenge, but if I did it would be with a large bucket of ice -- not cold water. That's just a field shower.

Mkrop: Just for you! I hate getting wet with my clothes on. As in I detest it, even if I can change and dry off immediately after. I don't know why, unless it's just too many times spending hours in outside in pouring rain, soaked to the skin and unable to do anything about it. Now if I had supporters, who had each pledged something if I WERE to dump the bucket, I'd do it. THAT would make SENSE.
