Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

It's brilliant viral marketing! I only wish my organization (Special Olympics) had thought of it first.

I AM "over it" though. Tired of being called out by people who haven't donated a dime and are just in it for the fun.

How do you they have not donated a dime? I havent told anyone I donated until this thread that both DS11 and I both donated. We just dumped and challenged the next group.

And once again with out the dumping of ice, most people would not have written the check too. People would not have been drawn in to the cause.

Once again I will use the SPCA as my example, if they did not put the puppies and kittens on there with the big eyes making your heart melt some people might not have donated, but once you see the abuse, you might be like oh gosh let me donate.

Or just like the two sets of cookies in Oct, you will be drawn in with the one with the pink ribbon or the pink packaging and you might pick those over the cookies that are plain

I know of someone that did a Special O fundraiser where they jumped in an ice cold pool once an hour for 24 hours straight.

SO has been doing the polar plunge for years...just not with the same amount of viral awesomeness. I guess jumping in a frozen pond in January is a bit more of a challenge than most are willing to undertake than a bucket of ice over the head in August LOL!

This one wasn't the polar plunge in a pond. They had a small quick set pool on the roof of a building and once every hour they would jump in and quickly back out. It was filled with ice and they did it for for 24 hours.

Wasting water?? As if using swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, etc. are not being used by some of these same people complaining about waste!

Sure not 'wasting' it in this area - 10" above normal rainfall this year already!
As for the areas that may be in a drought, doubt seriously this makes that much difference or it would not be allowed.

If you don't want to do it or are "over it"; why not just ignore it?

This stunt is bringing attention to a cause and getting huge amounts of money donated to that cause. So, its working.

I really had no idea what this was till yesterday when I took the rare monthly plunge to my FB wall. Seems to me anyone who has a problem with this actually has a FB problem. My feed was cluttered with people doing this. Good for them, raise that money, but really this doesn't affect me at all as long as I continue to interact with my friends face-to-face rather than on Facebook.

At first I thought this ice bucket challenge was silly and was angry. Lost a friend to ALS three years ago... in the beginning it killed me at all the silliness about something so serious ?did people really understand what ALS is and how fast it turns an individuals life upside down... that being said hearing how much money has been raised changed my mind. Money goes to so much more then finding a cure, local chapters for ALS help get equipment for people that might not be able to afford it, or train volunteers to go give family a break, or just some much needed help. The attention is great even if 'silly" at times. when I went on Amazon the other day there was a link to go donate- I though that was neat!!

I've been thinking of this as just a harmless way to bring attention and hopefully some cash to a worthy cause. Water problems in some areas aside, it's a bit much to get so bent out of shape about it.

If you don't want to take part then don't. If anyone gets offended by that then that person is the one with problems.

Was anyone "over it" when people started wearing ribbons, and now people wear them all the time in a variety of colors for a variety of different charities? When it started I believe with AIDS did people begrudge that charity?

Was anyone "over it" when Lance Armstrong's Yellow Stay Strong Bands were all the rage, and everyone was wearing them? And now once again bands can be found in all colors and for all causes? Were people begruding the money and awareness that his bands at the time brought to cancer?

It is ALS's turn to have some attention, plain and simple. A simple task has brought awareness, just like the ribbons and bands and the color pink has done before it for different diseases.

Next it will be another cause...and when it is their turn and people can unite and raise money and awareness for that cause too, it will be a good thing!

Actually, I like to think that it's Facebook's fault. If they didn't have the stupid autoplay function for every video it wouldn't be quite so annoying.

Does your scroll function stop working when it gets to a video? I will keep scrolling and once past it, the video stops playing. :confused3

I was over it with the ribbons because the percentage of money collected actually going to the cause was terrible. Cancer charities would have been far better off if you donated 1/3 the price of all that pink stuff directly to your local clinic than bought all that feel good crap. Hopefully, this Ice bucket stuff isn't similar.

On my phone it causes everything to lock up. On my laptop auto play is just annoying.

But without all that "stuff" and ribbons, the awareness would not be the same and the disease would be just that another disease with only a small percentage of people giving. These things brought awareness and education to the masses, and it saved lives too bc people went and got helped, like mammograms, instead of being unaware that it could affect them.

Like any charity you need to do your homework and make sure the money is going to research and help versus massive admin costs.

But if people arent aware than they cant help.

I think that it did exactly what it was supposed to do, which was raise awareness and funding. If someone doesn't wish to participate, then they don't have to, but I really don't see the need for some to start pooh-poohing the act because they are "over it".

I stopped reading after awhile and thought "wow, WHAT A BUNCH of KILLJOYS"! :rotfl:

Nitpicking and getting annoyed by a successful charity? Wow, I guess I get annoyed by nitpicking critical people who get annoyed by charities that raise money for a good cause. :thumbsup2

:surfweb: Need another vacation...
