I'm kinda sad about this

1 bedrooms wipe away any fondness for the moderates! I love being in my king-sized bed, or in the jacuzzi tub sipping mimosas that I keep easily in my full-sized kitchen!

Having the child sleep in another room is key to vacation happiness, too!

Exactly!

We know how the OP feels. I always did like POR and miss it. My wife is a big Poly fan and misses it. We are very happy with our DVC membership and have enjoyed staying at all the different DVC resorts but still have a urge to occasionally stay at one of these two resorts...smjj

Having never stayed at PORS, I have to ask--what is so great about it that everybody loves it so much? Just curious.

For us it was the Alligator Bayou area bldg. 14. Close to the main bldg. and the landscaping is one of the best Disney offers. It is just very pleasant to stroll thru the grounds after a long day in the parks. I have mentioned before, I think it is a 5 key resort at a 4 key price...smjj

We have only 250 points and supplement our DVC stays with other WDW resorts, Priceline *gasp* especially at the resort level, and even Windsor Hills. I know I will book a stay at the new family suites in the Art of Animation once it's complete. I want to see those Innovabeds! DH wants to stay at every resort at least once, so for our F & W weekend in 2010, we spent one night at CBR. I could see going back there, especially if its a Friday or Saturday prior to a DVC stay.

Don't get me wrong, there was no missing POR or Poly during our first DVC stay in an OKW 2BR! Full size refrigerator, washer/dryer and all that space - I was in heaven. But, I do look forward to spending a night or two at our old favorites when we don't have the points for a DVC villa. Sentimental reasons, I guess.

Even children get spoiled by DVC, I'm afraid. We recently spent a few nights at Beach Club in a regular room - short trip and no extra points. We walked into the room and my ds10 says, "Wait, this just a regular room. We are aren't staying in a villa? It's not really worth the trip without a villa." :lmao: I felt guilty when he said that because think of how many children would be ecstatic just to be at WDW no matter where they stayed. I do often remind my kids how lucky they are, and that we make do with less in other areas to be able to take trips to Disney and other places.

Anyway, back to the OP...you will learn to love you new DVC home, I'm sure of it. And if you will be getting villas instead of studios you will definitely not look back! It is always possible to drop by other resorts for a visit and stay a night or two before your DVC stay.

It is a nice option for families of five with young children because some of the rooms have a trundle bed. It is the only moderate level resort that sleeps five in a room - crowded, but doable if you are not going to be spending much time in the room except sleeping. The grounds are peaceful with lush landscaping, the food court is a nice size with good variety and there is boat service to PORQ and DTD.

You should never fell that you need to always stay at a resort. If you don't mind dealing with renting that is the best thing to do and than stay anywhere

I so understand this! We had some of our greatest vacations when Riverside was Dixie Landings! My boys (and daughter) were able to wander around the huge complex, go to the gameroom alone, swim etc. We still love to go over for lunch at least once a year!

I just bought DVC and honestly part of me is kinda sad that I won't be taking my vacations at PORS. Has anyone else felt this way? I'm wondering where I can find a current point chart to stay at PORS:rotfl2: They just had to make those moderates so stinkin' nice! Maybe I'll just rent out half my points each year and pay for a stay at PORS.:lovestruc

You'll get over it. ;)

I agree, you'll get over it. We felt the same way. After several DVC stays we tried a moderate and really missed DVC.

:goodvibes

Uhh...

Let's look at that hotel REALISTICALLY

1. Outside corridors
2. No Free internet
3. Double beds
4. No coffee pot

It's not even comparable to your local Marriott Courtyard. but it's "Stnkin' nice" Really, they provide less then ANY hotel chain out there, IMHO that's more like a 'stinkin' shame' and I am glad my DVC keeps me from having to overpay for subpar hotels while still staying on property.

1. I actually like the outside corridors.
2. No need for the internet on vacation.
3. I've only stayed in King rooms
4. They do have a coffee pot but I don't drink coffee.

I just really enjoy the grounds of the resort. I'm happy I bought DVC overall since I did buy at Boardwalk which has nice grounds. I will also look forward to SSR Or OKW in addition to my home resort. It's just that PORS was my go-to resort. I think I'll plan on staying there once a year or once every other year in addition to my DVC stays.

My DH and I struggle with this regularly. We absolutely love POR. We have had DVC for several years now. We love it and enjoy the different DVC resorts that we've stayed at but will still miss POR. We keep considering taking advantage of one of the discounts that we keep seeing so that we can feed our POR addiction.

I;m glad about not being the only one who feels this way.

I was the same. I loved staying at Port Orleans.

However what I found was the OKW was really very similar to PORS but simply a little bit better. Therefor when I need a POR fix, I stay at OKW in a 1bed. Dont miss POR then!

I think we agree that it's the grounds/atmosphere at POR that is so appealing to us. Plus, the fact that that's where we took the kids when they were little...so we have great memories!

We have not stayed at OKW yet. What exactly about it reminds you of PORS?

I liked POR -- we stayed there twice.

But don't miss ANY of the non DVC resorts once I walk into a one or 2 bedroom DVC room!

The pastel shades everywhere. The open grounds. The laid-back southern-ness of both resorts and the boat to DTD.

i stayed at POR well over 100 nights and whether it was the Riverside (Dixie Landings) or French Quarter I always thought these were the two best plaes to stay. I have stayed at all the Mods, all the Value and all the Deluxe as well at one time or another but once I spent my first vaca at OKW I was hooked. I had always seen the resort from the bus window and wondered why it wasn't an option for booking.

I spoiled my wife by taking her to Disney for her first trip in 30 years and we stayed in a one bedroom at OKW. A few years later we decided to take a quick trip with friends for a birthday and stayed at Riverside....she was majorly disapointed in the room and we have never gone back. I do miss it as it was almost a home away from home, but it does not measure up to OKW.

If I'm right...using points to stay are regular resort rooms is a much higher cost than booking a deal room with Disney.

My two cents!

Before we joined DVC, we stayed at OKW in a 1-BR. Since then, we've only stayed in 1 and 2 bedrooms. Like others have mentioned, we have stayed at the AS's just for a night to save points.

I would love to try some of the moderates, as we have never stayed there (just at the 3 AS values). With a family of 4, it's just hard giving up the extra space, kitchen and washer/dryer in the villas! :cloud9: But when I actually think about staying there, I envision DH and me doing that after the kids are gone. Even then, I don't think we'd use points to do it. With the number of points they are asking, plus the $95 exchange fee, I'd rent them and pay cash. I still don't understand why Disney charges $95 to exchange for Disney properties, but that's another thread for a different day! :rolleyes1

Needless to say, we are thrilled with our DVC and have never looked back. If anything, I can't believe I'm staying where I'm staying, as we would have never paid the prices they are asking to stay at such beautiful resorts. We would have continued to stay at the values or possibly moderates.

I've stayed at both PO and FQ in the past. Last time we stayed at SSR, or maybe it was OKW, we and our guests took the boat to FQ and spent the day at the pool. You can have the best of both worlds, ie stay at a DVC villa, and spend the day at POFR. All you don't get is the privilege of sleeping there overnight. If the boat is too slow, you can drive over.

Only got to experience it once, but I'm going to miss staying at the Poly. I bought into DVC the year after we stayed there but I can tell we would have probably become Poly loyalists. On the other hand, I love the larger accommodations, washer/dryer, internet, movie rentals, etc. that we get with DVC. Oh well, we plan on spending an afternoon at the volcano pool next trip so at least get to visit. Maybe one day we'll book a stay on cash.
