I can get tickets for $20 cheaper through UT, plus I would get an extra day (the 5 + 1). I would like to do the QSDP, but didn't know if I can just add that to a room reservation only.

No, unless you are a DVC member or AP holder, you must purchase a Disney package to add the dining plan. By definition, a package for people not in those exceptions mentioned is a room + ticket. A one day ticket purchase is required to add the dining plans if you are paying for them, two days for the free dining offer.

Just so I understand, I could buy a 1 day park ticket through Disney and get a 5 or 6 day dining plan, and then buy the other days tickets from UT? I'm sorry to be dense, but I'm trying to make this as cheap as possible, because I don't think that I'll be able to go any other way!! Thanks for the information.

You could do that but it would actually cost you more than if you just booked a package with Disney and got all the days you need on that ticket. Run the numbers and see what the total is for each.

I agree. It very rarely makes sense to use 2 different tickets over one trip, but as stated, do the math and see.

DVC owners and AP holders can get room only and dining plan. Used to they had to purchase a one day ticket with their package to get the dining plan. Not sure what the rules are now. I would call WDW and ask. and then call back and ask again. Just to make sure you are told correctly the first time.

For the trip we just came back from we booked Pop at the military rate and added dining. We bought our tix at SOG and/or upgraded old free dining tix at the gate.

From your signature I'm guessing you might have booked military also.

yea but they didn't ask what kind of ticket I was buying, they just asked if I wanted to purchase them through them and I said no..... all we used was the 40% off Military rate...... I always thought that the 'thing' enabling you to get a dining package was the room..... can you get dining staying off site with just a ticket??

Did you book the Military room-only discount? Because you can add dining to those rooms without adding tickets. I guess the assumption is that you would get the military salute tickets instead. The reservation is treated like a package even though tickets are not included in it.*

No. That's not true.

You have to buy a MYW package (room + tickets) in order to get the dining plan. The only exceptions have already been listed:

1. if you are staying at a DVC resort on points
2. if you are an AP holder and book an AP room with dining package
3. or if you are staying on at military discount room and book a military room plus dining package

During free dining, you have to buy at least a 2 day ticket with your package. When you pay for dining, you only need to buy a 1 day ticket.
