I'm planning a mother/daughter trip for October to celebrate my DD's Sweet 16! Our budget is tight so trying to save as much as we can on flights and resort so we can spend comfortably on food and extras. My issue is flight prices. I can pay $123 w/ SW for AirTran-cant choose seats. It's DDs first flight. We need to sit together! I can get same flight thru AirTran for $144-can choose seats. Maybe option to BUY seats? Not sure. Those are both direct flights. OR I can do Delta for $144 and choose seats. Not direct. So I guess I just need to figure out if the risk of not sitting together is greater than price. Any advice?

We (4 of us) always try to travel nonstop. Since you are traveling in October, there is always a chance for bad weather, so I wouldn't pick a non-direct flight. We have mostly traveled with SW and never had a lot problem picking seats together. However, it can happen. If you are so worried, you should pick AirTran $144, so that you can pick seats.

I agree about the nonstop flight. I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should be concerned about seating or if I'm just panicking cuz I read it on the Dis! Maybe checking in at 24 hours will be ok. Not sure if there is a real concern or not.

We've flown SW from New England to MCO three times, with all four of us. Never had a problem being separated. Just be sure to check in exactly at that 24 hour mark. I know it's a chance and could happen, but we've not had one issue at all.

OP's concern is that it's technically an AT flight but when it's booked through SWA, you can't choose seats. If she books same flight directly through AT, the price goes from $123 to $144 plus the cost to reserve seats.

OP, I also have a 16 yr old though he's flown often but we still like to sit together. Usually I don't mind paying extra for the seat selection.
If you chose the AT via SWA route, and you don't get to sit together, how stressed out would you be? Would you then be willing to pony up the extra $$ to be together? If so, you have your answer.

I never fly Delta simply b/c they don't fly non-stop from Philly but I do hear often here how they change flight schedules often. changing times, non-stop to a connecting flight, etc.

Also it's helpful to others if you keep in mind the flight terminology so everyone knows exactly what you mean, and the airlines too if you call with questions.
A direct flight isn't necessarily a non-stop. It could stop somewhere but you don't have to change planes. Not a biggie to many but if you have fear of flying or not good with take offs/landings, etc you may want to limit your search to non-stops. They minimize your overall time door to door.
A connecting flight is one where you have to deplane & go to another gate, then get on another plane. Though you don't have to retrieve your luggage for the 2nd leg, it does increase the risk your luggage could be delayed/misdirected. Also if weather is bad, not just in your home town, but even just fog in the city "your" plane is coming from, it could delay your 1st leg & cause you miss your connection.

Long story short, go for a non-stop. :thumbsup2

You are not guaranteed with Delta. Last time I flew them to Orlando I bought my tickets months in advance when it came time to board I was told they had changed equipment and I was reassigned a seat. I've flown Southwest the last two times and have not had a problem getting seats with my family. Just be sure to check in online 24 hours in advance.

Thanks, guys! Yes, I should have said nonstop instead of direct flight. I would prefer nonstop so I guess I need to decide if I want to choose seats or leave it to chance at 24 hour check in.

Sometimes this is a last minute switch, sometimes not so much. Even if you book far in advance, it's good to occasionally view your res online. If they moved your seats, it would give you time to choose from home in advance.
This happened to us with USAirways in Nov. It was too late to get us all together near the front where we originally chose so we ended up almost at the last row but at least we were together.

It was a last minute switch. I had checked. They had actually rescheduled our flight twice, both times making our layover longer. Didn't make me a Delta fan. Thankfully I can fly Southwest nonstop. I pay the $12.50 early bird fee for each member of our family of 5 and so far it has been a breeze flying with them.

I'm thinking about just doing the AT flight for $144. Haha, it's only $21!
