I'm going! celebration thread

So fun! I've never been and am not sure I even will be, but just wanted to say to have a great time---enjoy the D700 (I'm sure you are __ this close to buying one, don't lie) and make sure to post lots of pics when you get back! :goodvibes

We've been 3 times, but not since 07. You're going to love it! How wonderful to have a reason to make regular visits there!

Have a great time .. any excuse to go is a good excuse. I hope to make there at least once in my lifetime

Disneyland is wonderful! In January it shouldn't be too crowded either, especially during the week.

Check the schedules; the fireworks and Fantasmic don't happen every night, or at least that was our experience in May 2005.

:thumbsup2 You will have a great time out here John. The end of January is one of the best times to visit DL as far as crowds. The down side is that Rivers of America will be drained during that time so there will be no riverboats, Pirate Liar (Tom Sawyer's Island), and Fantasmic. To bad because our Fantasmic is quite different than DW being performed on the Rivers of America. The biggest thing you will notice is how close everything is here compared to WDW. That is the one thing that you will notice right away is how narrow main street is compared to WDW. To us MK MS looks like a 10 lane freeway not a Main street. The good news is that your legs will not be as tired as walking around WDW but you can still put on the miles. You will be fine without the 70-200. I stopped taking anything beyond 105mm because of the closeness. If you have a D700 and a 50mm f/1.2 you will have a blast on the dark rides. I shoot with a 30mm f/1.4 on dark rides and it works great. The other difference between parks is how much narrower the canals are on POTC and IASW compared to WDW. Our second park, California Adventure, is a one or two minute walk across the entry plaza. As you have probably read, it is under considerable remodeling for the next two years but there is still a lot to see. Let me know when you will be out here and maybe we could meet up for a few shots. Any questions ask away.

How great - have fun!

As was said - be certain to check out the schedules b/c not everything runs every day. I recommend trying to see the Aladdin show at DCA. The Hyperion theatre offers good views from most every seat but with the 50mm you may want to be in the front section. Also Billy Hill and the Hillbillies can offer amusing photo ops. Maybe a trip up in Mickey's Death Wheel - oops, I mean Mickey's Fun Wheel to get a high perspective of things.

You probably are going to have a strange feeling at DL - that it seems familiar, yet it's not quite right. That itself can provide some nice photo ops - pictures of things that are different - or don't exist at the MK. New Orleans square, open-air tea cups, the Matterhorn, outdoor loading IASM, Nemo Subs, a monorail running thru the park, Indiana Jones, Alice and Mr. Toad just to name a few.

I grew up going to Disneyland. I love it there. I didn't go to WDW until I was 26 and married! But both my DH and I have been to DL more times than we can count.

It's funny how it's so similar, yet so different. I love the nostalgic feel to the place. Pirates is SO much better there, as is the Tiki Room. Don't miss either of those. I love the Tea Cups and I think that the Matterhorn is about the best thing there. Splash is definitely better in WDW, but still fun in DL and Big Thunder is different, yet very cool in both places.

Toontown is totally fun. And the Aladdin show is not to be missed. I really like California Adventure - there is a super cool laid back vibe there. I'm looking forward to the expansion and remodel of that place.

I haven't been to DL since 2007, so it's been a while (we've been going to WDW the last couple of years instead).

The one tip I'd give you is that staying off-site at DL is way better than on-site. I love the Candy Cane Inn, which is just a block from the entrance. But even more, I love the Hyatt. Not only does it have a Starbucks in the lobby, the rooms are great, shuttle service was easy (although we just did the mile walk because it was an easy way to decompress after a long day), the breakfast buffet is yummy and Target is across the street. That's where we stayed the last time we went and we will definitely stay there again (we got a AAA rate of $80/night + full breakfast buffet!).

You'll love taking shots in New Orleans Square and the Matterhorn. The fireworks are much different and the castle is really small compared to Cinderella's castle in WDW. There are tons of photo ops in Cali Adventure too.

Have a great time!!

Don't miss the following attractions that you can ONLY find at Disneyland (and NOT in the Magic Kingdom):
  • Matterhorn - a fast rollercoaster through the big white mountain
  • Storybook Land Canal Boats - a slow, leisurely boat-ride through miniature lands found in Disney stories
  • Casey Jr. Circus Train - a kiddie train ride around part of Fantasyland
  • Pinocchio's Daring Journey
  • Indiana Jones Adventure - CAN'T miss this ride!
  • Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage - a very very popular submarine ride. Don't miss this one either!
  • look for the outside of Club 33 in New Orleans Square. It's a highly exclusive, members-only club with a secret entrance outside the exit of Pirates. The best you can do is take a picture outside the unassuming door with the "33".

Here are a few things that are different:
  • It's a Small World - the waiting & boarding areas are outdoors
  • Mad Tea Party - the teacups spin outside and uncovered
  • Haunted Mansion - lines are outside, you get up close to the mansion, and the hallway leading to the boarding area is different
  • Pirates of the Caribbean - the beginning of the ride passes by the Blue Bayou restaurant, similar to the Gran Fiesta Tour in Epcot's Mexico Pavilion
  • Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters - the blasters aren't stuck to the vehicle. You can actually pull them out to shoot!

Ok, this list is definitely NOT comprehensive, but I'm sure you get the idea. Congratulations on your upcoming Disneyland trip, and can't wait to see your photos! :)

Similar enough to feel comfortable, different enough to be disorienting. Stay at Grand Californian and walk right into California Adventure or stay at Disneyland Hotel and take the monorail right *into* Disneyland! To me the biggest thing is that the monorail runs through the park, much more cool than a station outside the park.

Don't forgot Mr Toad's Wild Ride, no longer in WDW! A great dark ride.

I've been to DL a couple times in the past few years and the main thing I notice about it is how dense it is. It's got probably more attractions than WDW's Magic Kingdom crammed into a smaller space. This is both more intimate and more claustrophobic.

I am one of the ones who feels that the DL Pirates is not all that much better than the WDW one, for the following reasons:
1. The queue is just terrible compared to the WDW one. You're outdoors by some steps, and once you enter the building, you are in a hallway for maybe 20-30 ft then you board the boat. The WDW is much, much more immersive, probably one of the best queues in WDW.
2. The bayou scene is interesting but seems to drag on for a while. IMHO it's mainly there to get you to the drops that go below the railroad and to give the Blue Bayou diners something to look at. (Yes, you should try to eat there! I don't think it's as good as the best WDW restaurants but it is pretty good and a great experience.)
3. Worst of all, the long and pointless post-show travel to get back up to the load level, including passing by the people waiting in line. The last couple minutes of the ride are just there for technical reasons and the WDW one ends at a more appropriate time IMHO.

These are the kind of things that can be debated all day - that's just my opinion. :)

A few other observations... DL's Autopia is better than WDW's Tomorrowland Speedway... DL's Enchanted Tiki Room is about a million times better than the abomination that is "Tiki Room Under New Management"... Downtown Disney is a bit dull in DL vs WDW... Eating late at night is much more difficult in DL!... CA's rollercoaster is great but their Tower of Terror is not nearly as good as the WDW one (but they do have an extra "ghost" scene and a very cool "shuddering" effect)... WDW's Main St Bakery is way better than DL's (especially the cinnamon rolls - oh, and no flies!)... DL Splash Mountain rafts are only one person wide... but DL's updated Space Mountain is really fantastic, with two-person-wide vehicles. I haven't been on the new WDW version but from what I've heard, I suspect that DL still has the better Space Mt... DL's "Remember Dreams Come True" fireworks show was incredible - much, much better than Wishes IMHO, but their new one doesn't look as good from the videos I've seen but probably still better than Wishes... and the World of Color show isn't running yet but it looks like it should be incredible! Oh, and the monorails look cool but are much better (and way more practical) in WDW.

Last trip, we stayed at HoJo's the first night (which seems to be one of the top-rated for DL visitors) and is was fine, then stayed at the DL Hotel, which was cool.

Have a great time - it's fun to see how the "other coast" lives! :teeth:

If you do any other theme park stuff in CA - skip Universal Studios! It's really, really lame, with only about 4-5 rides in the whole place and a couple shows. A friend of mine who lives in LA now loves Legoland but we haven't seen it ourselves yet.

Hope you guys have a great trip, John! We hope to make it out there soon.

I love the Candy Cane Inn

Another vote for the Candy Cane Inn - it is located adjacent to DL on the same side of the boulevard as the entrance so it is very convenient. The rooms are comfortable, it's quiet, and the staff are very pleasant. Sort of like a WDW moderate.

If your wallet can handle it the Grand Californian is like a WL on steroids (excellent restaurants too). And you can walk out of the hotel onto the entry plaze for DL - or walk out into the 'back door' of DCA.

you will notice right away how narrow main street is compared to WDW

DL has more attractions than MK - it's like MK plus some Epcot plus some Studios - so there is less open space than there is at MK - so any wide angle lens you have is sure to get some work.

Typical California sunshine is beautiful and clear - except in Anaheim (Los Angeles County) ;) Fair amount of pollution grays it out - maybe you'll get a nice ocean breeze to blow it out. If it looks all cloudy and nasty when you wake up don't worry about - it'll burn off by late morning.

DL Pirates is 2-3 times as long as the MK version so you'll have lots more photo ops.

The exterior of Small World was designed by Mary Blair and is fantastic - plus the DL Train passes in front of it. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies with photo ops.

Snow White's castle is smaller so it doesn't dominate the skyline. Getting photos of the fireworks will be a challenge because the viewing area is tight - but if January is low crouds it might be possible.

There's nothing better than getting into the park early and having breakfast at the River Belle Terrace - Walt started his day there many times. It's the only (?) restaurant that is still there from 1955. It may not be so nice if the Rivers of America have been drained though...

Enjoy the trip, it's a fantastic place!

Not taking the 70-200 because I do not want to be hassled for being a pro!

Ohhhh.....I forgot about the lens restriction at DL. Are they still prohibiting lenses beyond a certain length? I have to got to LA later this month for business and am thinking about staying an extra day to go to DL. I was going to bring my 70-200 since this is the first solo trip I have been able to take and wanted to focus on photography. Maybe not such a good idea. Does anyone know what the restriction is? Thanks

I don't have a 70-200 but they have never questioned my 70-300 that is in my bag not on the camera. We go all the time and no one has ever hassled me over camera equipment.

I carry loads of camera equipment through the gates at DL including the 70-200 f/2.8, tripod, etc. I have never experienced any problem whatsoever. :)

Good to know. Thanks!

I just got an e-mail about my bonus from work and with no vacation planned this year, I've got a wide open calendar. I'm thinking early May, how is that for you? :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Just think of the endless possibilities for swapping lenses! You could try the 70-200, I could try the 17-55 and the fisheye again. It would be magnificent! ;)

Ann I am more than happy to let you use my kit at Disney... you just tell me when you are paying for my trip... lol
