I'm getting a new knee!

Just want to send more good luck and best wishes from Md. your way George! :shamrock:
My DH suffers with osteo of both knees, has had surgery on both. He seems to be in a lot of pain more often now, so I'm thinking he's head down this path also. From what I'm reading this surgery has come a long way and that comforting to know. Sending prayers for a successful surgery and complete recovery. Pls let us know how things go.

Good Luck. BTDT, it's one hell of a ride. MAKE SURE you request a CPM machine from you doctor after surgery. I had one and it made a world of a difference in my range of motion.

I didn't start walking for a year, but that was due to some complications with chemo and such, which obviously you're not on. Good luck, it's not easy but it is SOOO worth it to be pain free.

:thumbsup2 Good Luck.

Maybe the new one will be Bionic....and you will be able to JUMP over all the lines in WDW!

I was 47 with the first and 48 with the second. Best thing I ever did. I feel great!

Good luck!

My dh was not yet 50 when he had his done over a year ago...almost 2 yrs at this point. He had a 'uni-compartmentalized' knee replacement. The thing that had him up and moving around as quickly as he did was presurgical workouts. He was in the gym building up those leg muscles before surgery. They wanted to keep him another night in the hospital but because he got around so well, so quickly, they allowed him to go home early. They were amazed at his movement so early on. His doctor said it was because of his preperation. So, if you can manage it, get to a gym and strengthen those quads!!! You'll be so glad you did.

Congrats!

My mom had one knee replaced years ago and is having her other knee done on Jan 20th. She has been in so much pain and can't wait to be able to walk normal again.

I think he said the recovery would be 6-8 weeks before all the pain would be gone, but I would be walking at least 100 feet with a cane before I got out of the hospital (about 5 days). I had a quick recovery from my original surgery 30 years ago, but I was only 32 and inn great shape. This time around I'm hoping to be getting around after a few weeks and just need a roadie to help with my amp and stuff for another few.

I did ask the doctor for a bionic knee so I could run fast and leap tall buildings with a single bound, but he said the best he could do is get me to walk without pain. That works for me.

I had my first surgery at 17, and 4 more over the years. the first surgery caused my later problems because they removed all the cartiledge and there was bone on bone contact for 43 years - they took aout a lot of deposits when they replaced mine - my scar is crooked because of it. My daughter is a PT and she still comments about that. Consequently, I was in subacute rehab after surgery for about 3 weeks - I was in very good shape prior to the surgery but sometimes it happens. i had terrible range of motion. After the 3 weeks though, things went fast and I was back to work in less than 8 weeks and did some modest hiking that summer then did a short section of AT in the fall and a trip to Disney.

the rehab was a little work, but I generally spend 4 days a week in the gym anyhow. Be prepared to do some work, but it's well worth it. Good luck. If you have a normal surgery, you should be fine in just a few weeks.

Total knee replacement or partial? My aunt had a total at the end of October and is still in alot of pain and going to therapy. She said partial is easier to recover from.

Mine will be total. There's nothing left worth keeping. I'm not sure how much flex I'll end up with. The doctor had a name for it that I can't remember, but it comes down to I'm about 10 degrees from being able to straighten my leg and about the same off full flex going in. The main thing I'm hoping for is getting rid of the pain. I can live with less than perfect flex.

Gee George, that's pretty bad. Mine was a TKR too. I bet yur range will be much better after the surgery. Good luck.

BTW, my PT was a real mean sob (not my daughter :lmao: ) and he worked me really hard. The more work you do in rehab, the better off you'll be!

Best wishes, George. I have been going around on replacement for a couple years now, not yet. I will have to race you to see who pays the bill next time we get together for lunch. :cool1: :tiptoe:

Lunch is on me next time, Dan. Hope it's soon. Dawn is feeling a lot better these days, too.
