I know I'm a good cook... Very good in fact.... but I am terrible at baking. I just made some Snickerdoodles.... :sad2: Not good.

Someone else can bake. I'll just cook from now on.

I hear ya! I love to cook but hate hate hate baking!

The chocolate chip cookies I made last week were flatter than pancakes. Tonight's batch was much better (after I remembered to reduce the sugar in my recipe) but I still hate baking. It's too picky and there's no flexibility.

Oh, I love to bake. I learned something early on - you have to learn your oven and adjust the times really well. My oven runs hot, so I have to take about 8 minutes off of every recipe for anything I bake to come out right. Also, I have to 'hover' around the oven even before the timer goes off, sometimes it's done even sooner than that! :)

Oh no, I hope this isn't a bad omen as I prepared Snickerdoodle dough today, hoping to bake them tomorrow.

I've had a much loved family friend's recipe for years and never made them before.

Their cookies always came out scrumptious so I pray mine do, as well!

I always hover, never bothering with the timer.

Baking is a science, right? :)

A man that can cook is good so don't worry. Your wife will keep you anyway!!

LOL Papa, I am a cook also , not a baker!! I try , but usually it ends badly. I will try again this year for sure and I imagine ruin 100.00 worth of ingredients. ;)

That's funny for I made Snickerdoodles today because DS asked me to. I let the butter get too soft in the microwave and it affected the quality of my cookies. I love to bake, am known in my family for my baking. I do tend to analyze my recipe after I bake it, to see what went wrong or right.

My girlfriend hates baking. She is not successful at it. Don't know why but I do know you can end up with different results even when you have made the recipe before.

I swear that some people hold the key to awesome baked goods, however, like you, I don't seem to possess that!

Not fair.....

Try a different kind of cookie.. You're giving up way too easily..:)

Baking is very different from cooking. Even the chefs on Top Chef have a problem with baking. It's because measurements have to be really precise, the timing & temperature has to be right, etc. Whereas, cooking can be more improvisational & intuitive. You throw in a pinch here, a dash there.

Anyway, what was your Snickerdoodle recipe? There is a great Cookies from Cake Mixes thread here on the DIS Cooking Board. :thumbsup2 It has a Snickerdoodle recipe in one of the first few posts. It is seriously one of the best threads :rolleyes1 on the DIS:

Cookies from cake mixes! Also: BISCOTTI and Cookie BARS

Cake mixes were designed in the lab kitchens to be almost foolproof, so that they can be used by the largest variety of people, like little kids with no experience with baking, to seasoned bakers, and the cakes & cookies work out right for everyone.

With so many different cake mixes and different kinds of imaginative add-ins, you can really have fun & never have to make the same cookie twice.

I guarantee you, no one else will have your cookies, and your twins will love Dad's imaginative cookie combinations. :thumbsup2

I think I just don't have the patience to bake.... nor the desire to be exact in measuring.

These came out tasting "ok"... but they were so light and airy that they fell apart most of the time when taking them off the cookie sheet.

I think it was all the baking soda. When you take them out of the oven, if the cookies look too puffy, you can slap the cookie sheet on the counter a couple times. This de-puffs them a bit.

Try this cookie recipe from my -err, the cake mix cookie thread. It's not a Snickerdoodle, but it's so easy. It's only 2 ingredients!

(You can also add in a handful of dried cranberries & walnuts or white chocolate chips to the two ingredients below. Maybe top with a canned cream cheese frosting.)

Pumpkin Spice Cookie

1 (18.25 ounce) box of spice cake mix
1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
2. In a large bowl, stir together the cake mix and pumpkin until well blended. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheet.
3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

You can also use chocolate cake mix instead of the spice cake mix for a nice chocolately-pumplin cookie. :goodvibes

A little FYI: Pumpkin puree - one cup: Vitamin A: 310% of RDA, Vitamin C: 20% of RDA, Potassium: 588 milligrams :thumbsup2

Here is one of my old recipes...The recipe on that site is way different from mine and you need to refrigerate the dough at least 4 hrs. to overnight.

1 c butter/margarine
2 c sugar
2 eggs
1 tbsp vanilla
2 1/4 c flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 c ground cinnamon

On med. speed cream butter, 1 1/2 c sugar, eggs, and vanilla until fluffy. Add flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
Blend until smooth. Cover refridgerate 4 hrs or overnight.

Line cookie sheets with foil shiny side up. Comine cinnamon with a 1/2 c sugar. Form dough into 1 inch balls. Roll in cin sugar mix. Put on try 1 inch apart. Bake 350 8-10 mins or until lightly brown.

I love, love to bake (and cook too, but would rather bake).
Been doing it for years and years......baked cookies every week for 10 years for DH's work place.
I am a great baker  and I must have a good gene for it because, I don't do exact measuring and everything always comes out great.

I must come out of lurkerdom for this one! Snickerdoodles are a passion in our house. They are my DH's favorite cookies and by chance when we married I had the exact recipe that his mother used when he was growing up.

Anyway, I hope you try again. These are amazingly delicious. My two tips are: #1 Use all butter and #2 Underbake them just slightly- this will allow them to remain chewy after they've cooled.

Snickerdoodles
1 cup butter softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 3/4 cups flour

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs. Sift together dry ingredients and add to sugar/butter mixture. Roll into balls and then roll in a cinnamon/sugar mixture. Bake at 350 for approximately 8-9 minutes.
