I'm depressed...we have to sell DVC

We have filed bankruptcy due to DH's company closing. We had listed our DVC VWL points before we filed and now have a sale pending and had to put it on hold due to bankruptcy filing. Now the lawyer says I'll have to sell our BWV points too. I'm very depressed. I have to cancel our BWV trip next summer (in all honesty I had only booked on a hope that we would be able to afford airfare and tickets by then) and the $$ I have put into the points will go to the court. I guess I can be thankful we had 2 BWV trips, 2 VWL trips and a 4 day cruise out of it, but it is still sad. DH says that when we get some money together we can buy in again, but I really only like BWV and VWL and don't know if we'll be able to get decent points at either. (SIGH). I have no interest in Vero or HH and don't want to pay Saratoga springs prices.
The kicker is that the $$ for the points went right into my credit union and right to Disney--we never even missed it--so the points were never a burden. If they had been and I had sold earlier, at least I'd have the $$ in my pocket.
Oh well, now I'll have to figure out a cheap way to go in July--2 rooms at the all stars perhaps? Or Port Orleans that sleeps 5? What a nightmare.

I'm sorry to hear you have to sell, however part of your post sort of confuses me..

I can't imagine filing bankruptcy, and THEN still planning a WDW trip- that, rooms alone, is going ot run you at least $120.00 a night? more so if you go with 2 rooms..

I'm sorry if I dont seem more 'upset for you' but in all honestly- I just cant imagine doing it...

I can imagine it. We have a couple at church that was comfortable. Well the man walked into work one day and was let go after 15 years with the company.

Their life is just up in the air right now. Yesterday, the wife who is my age came up to me in church and said we have a Christmas Trip to Disney planned. We have the rooms paid for, the tickets, and even our MVMCP tickets. We just don't want to cancel.

I totally understand!!! Sometimes when your life seems to be going crazy you NEED to escape, you NEED that family time AWAY from everything.

If you can afford it then GO and have a WONDERFUL time!

What is she supposed to do? Sit around in sack cloth and ashes b/c they have to file for bankruptcy?

I'm sorry you have to sell. I hope things get better soon.

::yes:: ::yes::

Is this a company your husband worked for that went brankrupt so he lost his job or is it a business your husband owns?

Sheesh, so judgemental.

There are all kinds of ways and legitimate reasons to declare bankruptcy. I think it's a pretty big assumption to say they didn't pay their bills.

To the OP, sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope you guys can get it together soon and that you can get your DVC back.

going crazy you NEED to escape, you NEED that family time AWAY from everything.

luckily our family has always been the type that can bond and get away at the Best Western 2 hours away just as well as with an expensive WDW trip.

I'm sorry Robin. I remember you posting a couple of weeks ago and I know it is harsh to see everything slipping away like this.

The only advice I can offer is that to me and our family -- happiness is more likely to be derived from financial stability and knowing our future is taken care of than a brief vacation.

And hey! If lack of WDW vacation is the equivalent of living in a sackcloth, I've been living the destitute life for over 3 years now and I didn't even realize it! Billions and billions of people do without luxury vacations every year, if that is the route you choose you will be in good company. :)

I think part of the story is slipping by people. She said she "always paid her DVC"....however, she's filed bancruptcy...obviously her WDW vacations came before her home, car, other bills.

It irks me, as I'm one of the people paying for her "debts"...we all are. How do you think these banks/cc companies etc. make up for this lost money? Why- by fee's that you and I pay.

I dont think she should sit at home in a sack- but geez- even a budget trip is gonna be at least 3K......thats a few months mortgage I would presume?

use the money- get a savings cushion....THEN when you can handle someone being laid off, or a business failing, you'll be able to cover your debts without wiping the slate clean with a bancruptcy filing.

Not much sympothy from here...sorry

Where in the post did she say that they did not pay their other bills.
This could happen to anyone,Even You.So why not chill out on the OP.
Never say that something like that can never happen to you,Cause you could be proved wrong very quickly.

Wow, people can be harsh and downright mean on here. Sorry but I just don't see bankruptcy as the big Horrible thing some people do. It happens, the important thing in life is to move on and try again.

I pray we are never in that position but one never knows what tomorrow will bring. I can promise you this though if we ever are in that position I won't be embarassed or ashamed, God makes EVERYTHING happen for a reason and hes always there to help. You won't see me hanging my head in shame. I've seen bankruptcy tear apart to many families and lives because of our economy here in the South.

Family is the MOST important and whatever needs to be done to keep family together and happy whether it be a vacation NOW when they need it or 2 hours away from the kids.

Can you tell this hits close to home for me? I've said before that a very close friend with a wonderful family commited suicide because of going broke in the farming industry and having to declare bankruptcy. He left behind a wife and two children.

NO BILL ON THIS EARTH is worth what this man went through with bill collectors and bankruptcy and the embarassment he suffered. I'm sorry and I know tons of people will disagree with me on this but since this happened DH and I made a vow and we NEVER fight or argue over money. If the bill has to be put off, then it does. If we ever have to declare bankruptcy for whatever reason then we will. Whats important is me, DH, DS and my mother after that NOTHING matters (Oh and our bills at this time are ALWAYS on time and we are doing better than ever in our lives but that hasn't always been the case!)

Anyway I'm going to say bye bye to this thread because its to close to home for me to see what bankruptcy and bill collectors can do to people and I'm not arguing it because NOTHING and no opinions are going to change my mind about the way I feel.

I say if you have the money GO, God doesn't promise us tomorrow!

I remember a previous post where Robin was talking about this. Said they were going to have to file personal bankrupcy because they had taken a personal loan on behalf of the business. Although they were able make all their personal payments they wouldn't be able to satisfy that loan and would have to file personal as well as the business. Sounds like it didn't work out that they could file just the business.

Most of the time a business can go under without effecting your personal status. Sadly in this case it isn't going to work that way.

At the risk of being FLAMED by this bunch, I say DITTO! We have used WDW as a mental health escape in years past when we couldn't afford it! Someone on these boards actually has a signature that reads something to the effect that WDW is cheaper than a shrink!

Good Luck Robin!

Robin,

I'm so sorry that you are going through this and so sorry that some posters are trying to beat you up. I too had read your earlier posts and know that this was not about being able or willing to pay bills. My husband owns his own business too and we had some difficulties in our early years. The bankruptcy laws are there for situations like this to provide a safety valve when it is necessary. Hold your head high & look forward to the future.

Good luck!
