I'm depressed...we have to sell DVC

Robin,

Sorry to hear about your problems. Rather than 2 rooms at All Stars or a moderate, how about renting points so you can still stay at DVC?

They had a business go under! Totally understandable situation. I am probably the most unpixie dust person on this board and I can't believe how ignorant some of you are!!

Robin, hopefully you can wipe out most if not all of your consumer debt since you are being forced to file personally as well. Then you can start over and save for that vacation. Have you ever thought about staying off site in a timeshare resort? There are some gorgeous places very close to the parks. We find some on par with BWV and some even nicer than OKW. Thanks to Skyauction, we go on several vacations a year very cheaply.

Please know that it's not the end of the world and please ignore the ignorance of some people on this thread. :)

I was going to suggest this too. Staying offsite. I don't know where someone got the idea that a 4 days trip was going to cost at least 3K  but you can sometimes get a room with a code at a value for around $49 a night. I did for my upcoming trip and I'll be there for 6 days/5 nights. My grand total for this hotel for the 5 nights came to approx. $275 and my airline tickets were $59 each way.

You can find offsite hotels on Expedia or priceline for WAY less than that. A friend of mine did a search last week because she wanted to take a quick trip and I helped her look stuff up on Expedia and we came up with Holiday Inns with rooms for $39 a night.

So if you can't get a cheap room onsite, you could always try offsite. It's not that bad. :)

We had a really bad patch about 7 years ago. Got really behind in things. Well, one day our next door neighbor came over to tell us that he had gotten a call from someone who had been trying to get in touch with us and couldn't get through. It was a bill collector who had tracked us down by our address and he started calling neighbors. We had already made repayment arrangements directly with the company but this guy still wanted his cut!!! Only slightly illegal. Man, it's incredible what these collectors will do.

Best of luck to you and your family Robin!

Karen

(((ROBIN))) Sorry you are depressed right now. But it will get better and will be so much better than it ever was. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

Robin,
Im sorry you have to go through this, I truly hope things turn around soon. I know how you feel about those DVC points, may hugs. I am also sorry that you were attacked on this thread. We went to wdw a few years ago after we had taken out a loan (to pay for our IVF). We realy should have put the money elsewhere, but I needed to go. If youare able to goin the summer I hope that ou do.
Tara

Ok, just a little perspective. Take a step back and put yourself into this situation.

Somebody borrows $25000 from you. They claim bankruptcy. Because of the lack of repayment YOU have to struggle to meet YOUR obligations . They go to Disneyworld. YOU cancel your trip.

That's a good point Y2L, but I am sure it will get lost in the shuffle....

I hope the OP gets back on her feet quickly....

In your other post you mentioned Well, DH talked to his lawyer today. His company is going under and unfortunately, since I cosigned on one big line of credit, we will both have to file bankruptcy to save the house. At the time the business was doing well. :(

Misfortune can happen to anyone due to jobs/business changes, medical expenses, natural disasters, etc. Yeah, it's not like they were running up a line of credit and not keeping up.

Money, vacations, and homes are replaceable - people are not. You WILL recover from this.. just walk away from this experience and use it as a learning opportunity. Here's a site that can help in regards to bankruptcy and credit: www.creditboards.com

Sorry, I haven't been keeping tabs on your situation closely, but if I may ask did you keep any emergency fund? My dh was laid off 4 times in the past 6 years so I always have an emergency fund now. Times are especially tough now, too, so one really never knows what's in store for the future, especially this being an election year and all.

Anyway, I'm sorry for what is happening to you, Robin, but I hope you don't mind me interjecting a public service announcement  ... may this be a reminder for everyone to have that emergency fund and expect the unexpected. Oh, of course, to stop being so judgmental, too. :D

FWIW I would take the trip and enjoy life. :earsboy: My dh will probably be out of a job soon (but he's a contract engineer and this is standard whereas he works temporary contracts) and will be hired by another company and so forth. I am still planning to go to Hawaii next year - I just plan, plan, plan and basically exhaust myself. lol

Take care, Robin, and be sure to let us know how it goes for you all!

I feel for you. Been there to a certain extent, so I know things like this can just "happen." Good luck and stay strong. I'm sorry about the DVC points, too. I know that losing your comfort zone or place of happiness can hurt the most. ((Hugs))

I'm sorry you are having to go through this, I know it would be very difficult for us. I'm also sorry that not everyone can understand that just because you made a difficult and life changing financial decision, that does not mean you are happy about it. You seem to be making a choice you did not want to have to make, and you have to give up things you did not want to have to give up. I wish you all the best in your future.

Hugs, Robin. Sorry things once again got nasty on the board. Good luck rebuilding. WDW will be there when the time is right. :)

**hugs** to you. what a rough day for your family. remember that this TOO shall pass =) Others have shared their own financial struggles, and they are back on their feet and able to visit the World again. It will be there when you can visit again =)

I hope things turn around for you and your family soon. It is a very difficult time. Going to WDW for a few days would be some down time for you all to relax and get clear heads about things. I do know where you are coming from as my DH is out of work after 25 years in his company and we are really sweating the future. Best of luck to you.

Good wishes, Robin, hoping all goes well ahead and you guys are soon back on your feet, I am sure you will. My best.

I'm not sure folks are understanding how bankruptcy works.

When you file bankruptcy, and I'm sure everyone agrees that there are many situations that warrant it, you hand over just about everything you have. The trustee will make sure that you are left with enough to live on. But any assets....gone.

No where does it state that you then have to figure in how much you MIGHT be able to save for luxuries in the future, and then hand that amount over also. They only ask for what you have now.

There is no system in place to continue to pay back who you owe after the bankrptcy is final. If you save $100 or even $1000 a month after bankruptsy is final, the law DOES NOT EVEN ALLOW you to continue to pay back your creditors.

So if someone saves some money after bankruptcy.......what are they supposed to do? Give it to charity as penance? Penance for what? Believing in the security of their job?

Should they never spend the money because it makes other people upset with the way the system works?

Let's give 'em some slack, it's a horrible thing to go through.

Hope things get better. One of the advantages of DVC is it holds it's value for the resale market. Remember, you can always rent points.

I cannot judge whether a vacation is appropriate for you, and certainly will refrain from doing so as a part of this thread. I presume the liberals here are the one's telling you how you should spend your money, you'll need to keep plenty on hand for the new taxes they will be implementing to pay for all the promises. :jester:

Seriously, I hope your family is doing OK, sounds like a very difficult time.

Robin-

Any chance you have a friend or relative you could sell your points to, and maybe buy them back at that same price down the road?

I used to be a BK paralegal, and have seen these types of things happen to many good, honest, hardworking people. There's a big difference between people who have a business fail through no fault of their own, and those who live beyond their means on credit cards and then go chapter 7.

Best advice I can give you is to reestablish asap, and keep in mind that this is only a temporary setback in life. Good luck!

Anne
