Shoot I am not in the mood to be cheap with the heat. It's not that cold out but it sure feels cold in here. It's about 50 outside.
I'm just having a pity party. Want to be back when I didn't care what the heat was set at. When I was irresponsible. For some reason this is really bothering me this time. Last year I was able to keep it low all winter - around 64 and we saved a boatload but I just don't think I have the stamina to do it again this year.

maybe I should go under a blanket. Meanwhile I am the only one complaining- everyone else is fine.

I hear you! LOL I'm FREEZING!! It's 52 here (outside...) No one else is complaining...I'd LOVE to turn on the heat...but just can't bring myself to do it. :)

Try putting pillows in your basement windows, or anywhere else that you don't go often. I have a laundry room next to the garage that gets really cold, so the point that the pipes will freeze if I don't put the pillows in... cheap solution and makes it a little warmer.

And open all your windows on sunny days for free heat.

I don't have my heat on either... and I watch my gas and electric bills like crazy. Most of my bills are around $65 for a 1800 sf house plus a finished basement. Highest this summer was $110, and my winter bills will usually be around $200-250 if I'm careful.

Here is my standard response when someone in my house says I'm cold:

PUT ON A SWEATER AND MOVE AROUND!

Don't want to be rude, but that's what I do myself!

he hee hee on the put on a sweater and move around- I went and put on socks and feel better. My feet being warm goes a long way!

I love this idea for the basement. I am going to do this- thanks.

That's like me with the A/C in the summer. I really, really wanted it to be 76 but that two degree difference is just so much more money. I highly enjoy my electrib blanket and lots of socks.

We just put more insulation in the attic last week, I cannot believe how much warmer it is staying! Of course, we're in Michigan, so I turned our heat on a few weeks ago! (But the furnace doesn't turn on as often as before, now!)

I will join your vent though our house is warmer than 64. I just can't go that low but I'm still freezing at 68. I'm wearing a fleece & unfortunately, am usually cold most of the time - I blame my thyroid. Though our bills aren't bad - gas/water is $99 & electric is $73 on budget bill & has been about that for 2 yrs. 2000 sq ft above ground.

How much insulation did you have to add? I wondered about that when I saw it in an ad this week. Our upstairs is freezing, even more so than the main level. I have flannel sheets on all the beds but it'd be nice to have it a little warmer.

Ugh, I'm not at all ready to hibernate for the winter yet!

A trip to home depot is in my future- The basement window tip is a good one.
Our big source of cold comes through the garage- I'm going to insulate the doors in there I think. And I am not thrilled about going up into the attic but that's a good one too- a little insulation goes a long way! Thanks!

Try a hot bath. That's my cure for everything. A hot bath will warm you up, stop aches and pains, relaxes you, wakes you up, puts you to sleep, stops depression, and will even get you clean.:goodvibes if you feel it's a time waster, wash your socks while you are in the tub.:rotfl: When you are done, don't pull the plug. Let that warm water warm the house instead of going down the drain.

We keep our heat set at 62 (and AC at 80) so sometimes I do get chilly!

I have one of those heating pads that goes into the microwave. If I'm cold I heat it up and tuck myself in on the couch with it and a blanket and I warm right up!

I always find that if my feet are warm then that is half the battle. I also have been known to vacuum when I get cold. I know, I know sounds weird, but it works (goes with the whole moving around thing I guess) Plus, a chore gets done-win-win!

Still holding out her in Atlanta. Haven't turned on the heat yet! We are making it a game this year to see how long we can last w/out turning it on!

Get a Snuggie. Those look really warm! Wear socks around the house. Wear a sweater inside.

Our heat has been on for about a month already. We keep it at 69. Mine and my family's comfort is worth the extra few dollars. :)

It helps to wear snuggly clothes, too...sweats, warm socks, a tshirt layered under a sweatshirt or flannel. If you get really cold, you could always break out the long underwear. ;)

If it is cold in the house I want heat. If I save a few hundred dollars and spend most evenings freezing under a blanket then I am wasting my time and my time is worth $$$.

If I spent thousands just to be marginally comfortable I would make energy saving improvements so I can be comfortable.

Our cutting the heat last year made a significant change- we saved over $3000! So that's why I suck it up and add a sweater. I almost wish I didn't know that I saved that much because that's what's keeping me keeping it low.

I'm as cheap as you are about the heat. DH bought me an electric throw and I leave it on the sofa to use when I'm bone cold! It's not a full size blanket but just enough to cover me perfectly! He bought it at Walmart and doesn't cost hardly anything to run with electric and has 3 settings. If it helps, home heating costs are supposed to be much lower this year than last. The reason being is that your heat supplier is locked in to a rate during the summer previous to the heating season. So, the summer prior to last winter was when oil was ridiculously high and even gasoline was close to $5 a gallon. You might be pleasantly surprised with your first bill. HTH!!

What a timely thread! It's good to know I'm not the only cold one out there  We're set to 65 right now. If I'm already doubting our ability to stay at 65 in November, how am I going to feel in January/February, our two most expensive heating months?
