Yep, its me again. I'm kinda struggling with maintaining after successfully reaching goal w/Atkins. I have been doing Jazzercise since 1/5/05...up to 5 days per week. I am noticing a firmer, more toned physique, but the scale is going the wrong way.
Any insight out there??? Its depressing...

Is it just a few pounds, Michelle?? Because if you are doing a lot of exercise you will be gaining a little weight from the muscle you are adding. I know you probably know that, but when it happens to you, it's like you don't quite believe it, right?

I'll never forget one time in college. I was standing in the cafeteria line waiting to get in and these two girls in back of me were talking about this very thing. The one said that she wouldn't trade being 126 pounds with being 118 because she was happy with all of the muscle she had. Ok, I thought to myself (and keep in mind, I was about 120 at the time), HA! I bet I'm going to turn around and she is going to look like a cow or something. I turned around ever so slightly so she wouldn't notice me, and you wouldn't have believed how thin she was. I'm 5 foot 3 inches and she didn't look any taller than me. SHE WAS SO LITTLE!! I almost asked her to prove to me that she weighed that much. :teeth:

Just goes to show, a lean body might not say exactly what you want on the scale, but I bet it shows in your clothes. How 'bout it? Do your clothes fit better?

Yeah for you for all of the exercise. :cheer2: :cheer2:

You are absolutely right about knowing with all the exercise I should know that the scale will fluctuate because of muscle mass.

My clothes are not getting looser, but they do fit better. Not that I had a real saggy butt, but...it seems to be getting better *shape* I am wondering if that is the negative shift in my clothes?

I AM, however 20 pounds up from my goal weight. (I lost 57 pounds) The clothes I wore then do not fit, so I do have to make some changes.

It seems also, that when I Jazzercise 5 days a week, I CRAVE more carbs. I get home about 10:45 and I am ravenous. (I eat breakfast at 5:30) I think I need to plan ahead better and have snacks and lunch stuff on the ready so when I do get home I have something safe to eat, and I don't binge on crud just because it is there and it is fast.

See? That is it, you don't see it until you put it down...I know I have to stop berating myself, this is normal. I have to focus on the good, this is major that I look forward to Jazzercise-It is so much fun!

Thanks for your insight and kind words... :)

Hi Michelle,

Welcome back! I have a question from one fellow low carber to another. How is maintenance working for you? Do you eat any carby stuff now that you are at goal? Did you allow for a few pounds to come back on and give yourself a cushion?

I have about 20 pounds to go to reach my goal and I'm concerned about how I'll handle maintenance.

I also wanted to comment about the exercise toning you but possibly making you weigh heavier on the scale. I thought I would have to weigh somewhere in the 140's or 150's to wear sizes 12 and 10. Well I am much MUCH heavier than that and wear a loose size 12 and was thrilled to fit into size 10's just this past weekend when I did some shopping. I'm 5'1" and never thought I could weigh this heavy on the scale but wear these sizes. So I know the exercise (which I do a lot of) is helping shape my body even though the muscle is weighing me heavier on the scale. People often ask me if I'm a size 10 or an 8 now so I know I look smaller than I actually am. I hope this helps you out.

Congrats on getting your exercise program together! I'm sure you'll tone up the way you want in no time!!

Maintenance has been working fine. I never truly figured out what my "magical number of carbs" to eat each day. I just started adding more of the good carbs-fruits, veggies, and stayed away from the refined sugar still.

I cheat now. When I was in the "losing" stage of Atkins, I NEVER....NEVER cheated. Not even one french fry. (my weekness) I did that from June 03 to Feb 04 when I hit goal. I was alright with the first 6-8 pounds over goal, but a couple of vacations later voila! Here I am at 20 over.

My original goal was even less than where I ended, but I felt great and looked great. I didn't want it to become a battle over the scale. I was wearing an 8 or 9. I can wear them now, they just look VERY bad. (tight) I am 5'8" and 178# My goal was 158, but I did get to 155. I will be happy if I can get back to 158 again.

What are you doing for exercise? Sounds like you are doing great!!

Mom of Sleepy....(you're right, that's a loooonnng name!!) neat story about the college girls. I think our biggest battle is truimphing over what the numbers on the scale are. Thanks for the insight!

So, onward and downward...

............ I know. We can put a man on the moon but we can't change a user name without taking away the posts. :p Besides, now everyone knows me by that name. Maybe I should put something under my user name like.............oh, ...............like, FingerLakesMamma or FingerLakesGal..............or,...............I sing, so maybe "Chirpy". I don't know, I think I need Tara.......she's so creative. :)
