I'm angry vent update post #53, its over

Excuse me whilst I vent.

For the past few weeks my nan has been is a care/rehabiltation home as she has has a few falls & needs 24 hour care, which my dad can't give although he has tried his best.

It was after going to hospital a couple of times, the dr's & occupational health pushed through the help my nan needs after months of my dad trying to get her own GP to help whose answer to everythin she needs to go private. My nan has had diabetes for over 20 years but has lost feeling in her feet a while back due to the nerve endings dying, therefore it is important she has her feet by the chiropodist. The last time this was done via her GP surgery was 18 months ago. She would phone & they would say we will call you back etc. When my dad mentioned this to the GP he just said oh you need to go private (his favourite saying), her GP also think there was nothing wrong with my nan even though the hospital doctors picked up on it straight away.

The care staff have been fantastic & they cannot be faulted, however the Matron/Manager of the place doesn't care about any problems which have occured, don't get me wrong my nan can be stubborn but the attitude of the Manager is not right, my nans GP prescribed that she can take paracetamol & ibuprofen alternatively as they are two different medications, in which the Manager said she cannot have them. It was only after my dad spoke to her & told her she backed down.

Anyway she has been going down hill since she has been in the care place. To which my mum & dad think she has had a mini stroke. Upon visiting today my dad bought up his concerns to the care workers & they were shocked as The care manager thinks this my nan had a stroke on Wednesday this week gone, she had a doctor attend but has never mentioned it to my dad. The manager has noted this is a book but not told him & she has arranged for a psychiatrist tomorrow for my nan to check for this & altzeimers but again has failed to mention this to my dad.

I'm angry that she has not had the decency to contact my nans next of kin about something like this If it wasn't for the care workers showing him the book he would still be none the wiser.

Sorry for it being long & thanks for letting me vent.

I have said this for a while due to my dad being in hospital for 7 weeks a couple of years ago. When people get to a certain age the medical profession could not give a damm.Sitting in a hospital for 7 weeks i have had my eyes opened. With what my dad has gone through no one will convince me other wise. If i was your dad i would give them hell

Nikki, I sympathise with you so much, I am in a similar situation at the moment with my nan, I have had a nightmare four weeks, I am wrecked at the moment, hence my lack of Dising, my situation has not been helped by the fact that my nan is so stubborn. Huge hugs to you and your dad, I know what you are going through xx

Give them hell. My BIL's mum was diagnosed with cancer at Christmas, she's been going steadily downhill and has support staff helping at her house every day. My BIL had to fight tooth and nail to get the care she deserved, push for her treatment to be carried out etc. It's disgusting the way the health preofession treat older people in this country.

It is so difficult to know what to do for the best - my grandad was very ill last year and we had to fight contsantly for answers and of course sometimes our loved ones are so stubborn it drives you crazy.

Hope you can get everything sorted out

How upsetting! Thats awful treatment. I worked as a Home carer once and was shocked at the some of things i was told to do by management and the little respect they have for the clients and their families. I loved what the job entailed but unfortunately i was forced to quit when i declined to what was asked of me because it would of harmed both myself and the client. They are required by law to tell you that information and i would make a formal complaint. I hope things get better soon

the care we give our elderly in this country is appalling !

I completely agreed (Have worked in a care home for the Elderly) and from things I have seen and heard it repulses me I'm afraid.

Thanks everyone my dad was going to have a word with the manager of the home today but the overall care manager for the area has found out & already complained to the home manager about the way she hasn't been doing her job properly.

There is apparently going to be a meeting after the psychiatrist on Wednesday so we shall see what happens.

My dad had a chat with one of the nurse's yesterday & the nurse doesn't hink she has dementia or alzheimers as they are progressive & what has happened to my nan is really sudden. The nurse is convinced she has something wrong medically but we won't know until she sees the psychiatrist who may put her into the hospital.

What isn't helping is that for years my nan's blood sugar levels have been steady if not the same everyday, since she has been in the rehab unit they are all over the place. I think they need to get that rectified as soon as possible.

An update:

My nan was seen by a consultant yesterday not a psychiatrist. My nan had blood tests last week but no one would tell my nan or dad the results. The consultant took one look at the results & admitted her into hospital. She is serverly dehydrated & is now on a drip but the doctor has said he doesn't know if it is too late to prevent organ damage as her salt levels were very high due to the dehydration.

He doesn't think she has had a stroke & is of sound mind, her confusion is due to the dehydration. My dad has explained all the problems she has been having for the past few years with the illness & falls & he thinks it is an over actived thyroid problem not vertigo which her GP has been saying it was for years & giving medication for it when she did not need it

The consultant is getting his thyroid specialist friend to do some tests on my nan but due to her age they are not promising anything but have been very open & honest instead of fobbing my dad off.

I feel that we are finally getting somewhere but the situation with her GP just keeps getting worse I just keep wondering if the GP actually paid attention to what he was being told & order relevant blood tests instead of just saying it was vertigo & prescribing her the wrong medication we may have not been in this position
