I'm a visual learner...tie dye?

Thought I posted my end results on this thread but there must be another one about tie dye.

Here they are - I am happy with them!!

Once I got the materials gathered and sewed the Mickey Heads it was much easier than I thought.....the hardest part was actually STARTING to dye as I had already invested SOOOOOO much time in getting supplies, sewing, gathering, banding that I was soooooo afraid I was going to mess up. I would definitely do this again...

Oh and my tip (which I also posted on the other thread) is to use one of those black Mickey head plates that they serve the kids meals in as a tracing guide....

I'd put in step 3.5: let shirts dry until just damp, THEN step 4.

I followed the instructions to tie then soak then squeeze the excess water out. Right. It was like trying to squeeze water from a stone! :rotfl2: Plus, having all the excess moisture in the shirts made for a very messy time and I was never sure just how much of the dye was actually getting through all of the tight folds.

My other suggestion is to start with the yellow, then the other colors. That's what I'm going to do this next time.

Good luck!

One thing that I figured out after the first set of shirts we made, was to put them in the dryer on the spin setting a few times to get the water out from soaking. Then I would proceed with the dye. It worked so much better then trying to squeeze all that water/soda ash mixture out, and this way they weren't dripped and running colors :)

We did 4 shirts the first year, 6 the second year (we did 2 for a Disboard member) and then 6 the third year to add to our sets (we adopted and of course everyone had to match). This year I'm really breaking the record...43. I'm making a new set of colors for all 7 of us, plus adding a shirt in every size till adulthood LOL for the kiddo's. I know....crazy!!! But the guy who used to mix my dye was going out of biz so I purchased enough to get me through and then purchased enough T's from Jiffyshirts....so why not LOL

Just got to remember to pace myself LOL It's not going to be fun sewing all those mickey heads :(.....if I survive this I'll never want to do another tie dye ever LOL

Here is a picture of the Primary Colors ones we made....the ones in my signature are the 'hidden mickey' ones we made the first year with purple/pink colors. It has a big one on the front and then lots of little ones all around.

Oh and I completely agree with everyone saying to wrap or bag your Mickey Head once it's dyed.....before moving on to other colors. That purple shirt is prime example why :) I accidentally dripped more dye on it and so it's not one solid color :(.....so now I make sure I wrap all my Mickey Heads before moving on and just snap a rubber band around the baggie to hold it in place...voila.

I'm loving seeing everyone's tshirt pictures :) Anyone else got any great color combinations? I'm starting a new set this week and I'll post pics when those are done :)

Thanks for the step by step instructions and to my good friend Nicole for showing me hers. I finished ours for our trip in Oct.

Here they are setting...

I can't wait to wear them IN Disney World.

Cute....I'm washing up my 2nd set now :) I have completed all 43....so far so good but I NEVER want to do another Tie Dye LOL

I love the dresses though...maybe once I forget how miserable I was completing this many I'll give the dresses a try for my girls.

I'm so excited to try this! I've never done any tye dying before so I hope it comes out okay. Just wondering, you can use plain ol' dental floss right? I think someone said don't make it mint XD But I have plenty of dental floss. Also, i'd like to do the spiral so I first band off my mickey head and then just follow the spiral instructions from there right? Like the twisting and then banding. Or should I twist and band and THEN pull the mickey head through. Thanks for the help! I'm going to go to Michael's and try to get a kit.

Help! We used the Rainbow tie dye kit & did this last night. Now today I'll need to wash the die out & I've lost the instructions. I have 5 shirts, all different colors. I rinse them in the sink, right? But I swear the instructions then said to wash them with a little bit of detergent in hot water. Can hot water possibly be right? My gut instinct says cold water. Anyone?

I'll post photos when we're done. This was a crazy project as I'm a tie dye newbie and have no idea if these will turn out or not.

I think the hot water is fine, just rince with cold water in the tub or sink till the water runs clear. I start with the lighter color areas if i can, so the darker colors don't get rinced down into the lighter areas. (can take a few minutes)

Then run them through the washing machine (i put multi items in together) with just a SMALL amount of detergent (Neutral detergent is best but i use my regular stuff)

The hot water helps get any excess dye out better then cold water.

Not really happy with the photo but this is the one that is the best of the bunch.......

I cant believe I didnt get a shot in front of the castle...but at least I managed to get everyone to actually wear them right? lol!!!

We did long sleeved ones in a deep red and green and they were awesome! We wore them to the MVMCP and dinner at LTT and got LOTS of comments.

How did you use the colours? Reading the instructions it calls for three colours and the mickey head colour. I was thinking that maybe I could leave the mickey head white and use green and red but would alternate in and colour each quarter red? Can you tell I've never done this before;) .

Here's a photo of me in mine. I just alternated the red/green and there was enough contrast to make them look really nice. We wore them a TON that year and last (this was in 2006) and they still look great.

I did red/white/blue ones for this summer and left the Mickey head blank (white). So I couldn't see why you doulen't do it with Christmas colors.

I'd love to see these pictures....but I can't access the Passporter boards :( Is there somewhere else to catch a glimpse of them?
