I'm a visual learner...tie dye?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. We just used the tie dye kit from Michaels. I think the brand was Tulip and it came with the 5 vibrant colors. As you can see ds mickey head was a little blurred so remember after you stitch and are putting the rubber bands around the mickey head to get them really tight. He didn't care and they were each unique so different parts stood out. We did different shirts for each day we were there but the rest were all iron on transfers and while they turned out good, these were by far our favorites!

Did you put a baggie over the mickey head after you dyed it to keep it seperate from the other colors? I hope to do this maybe this weekend or the next week. I also bought the Tulip kit from Michaels (gotta love those 40% off coupons!), but bought the 3 color kit with fuschia, teal and yellow.

I think we did put some cling wrap over them because it seemed we had shirt going in every direction with all the banding so everytime we moved something to get to another part it would make the mikey head move and we didn't want to ruin them (of course at that time we didn't know if any would turn out right but we were trying to be extra cautious). If I had it to do again I might experiment on 1 first just to get the hang of it and work out any bugs in my plan rather than jumping right in and doing all 6 at once but we were running out of time before our trip since I was making a total of 34 shirts I think. Crazy I know.

34 shirts??? I thought I was ambitious with my craft projects I'll post pictures after I do them. I'm only doing two--one for me and one for my daughter. I doubt very seriously my motocross husband would wear a tie-dyed mickey mouse shirt I've also seen some shirts with little rhinestones or crystals outlining the heads and like the look of those, so I think I'll probably do that too

At least the rest of them were iron ons so they didn't take quite as long. Good luck with your shirts, I have a feeling they will turn out GREAT!!

I kind of had to work on my husband (ok and apply a bit of guilt ) to get him to wear one but even he was happy with all the comments we got and how easy it was to keep track of everyone because we all matched each day.

We made these shirts for our trip last year and even though it was our first attempt at tye dye I think we did a pretty good job. The directions were great. We wore these to MK and I can't tell you how many times we were stopped and asked where we bought these! Bought them. They couldn't believe it when I said we had made them. This is a picture of 4 of us but grandma and grandpa were wearing them too so there were 6 of us all wearing these together.

They look AWESOME!!!

Can anyone help me out? I am trying to get t-shirts ready to tye dye with the mickey head but I am having a heck of time drawing the head on the shirts. Does anyone have a helping suggestion on how to get it there without much difficulty??

Trace around the head lightly with pencil. It will come off when it's washed but you can still see it. I couldn't get a mechanical pencil to draw on the shirt and had to scrounge up a regular pencil, but then it worked!

Just use one of your kids' washable markers...then it will wash out once you wash the shirt out...

Here's a pattern if you don't already have one:

Save it to your computer and adjust the size as needed. I printed mine out and then traced them onto that foam paper so I'd have something a bit sturdier for mass production since I was making a shirt for everyone in my large group

Ok I got shirts ready and did one. It kicked my butt I don't know what to do with the rest of the shirts. I guess I will see what the one looks like that I did. The kit I used you just added water and did the shirts dry. The dye bubbled up like there was a water resistance on the shirts. Yes, I did wash the shirts and did not add fabric softener or fabric sheet. I also have some that you soak with the ash. Is this better than the previous kit??? HELP I really want a mickey tye dye shirt.

Oh yes!! You want should really do the pre-soak with the soda ash. Those kits that don't require a pre-soak are worthless. The dye usually doesn't even stay strong enough to dye the shirt.

Ok here a few of the items I did for my DGD. Keep in mind this is the first time I have ever done the tye dye. Remind never to do any for DGD until she is in to bigger sizes.
