I'll be happy if I never see another hoodie with AERO or AE or AF on the front..

ever again.

Anyone else just sick of this tween/teen trend? These companies are making a fortune by sewing these appliques onto thin tshirts and hoodies.

It's all my niece asks for. Last year I gave in. This year, I bought two long-sleeve shirts at an outlet and decided then.. no more.

Does anyone else know what 12 year old girls are into? What about 15 year old boys? A 15 year old way too concerned about fashion in Smalltown, SC.

Good luck finding clothes for teens without name brands plastered all over them. Trust me, I've looked. Too big for girls, too small for womens, and the petites section is a joke. That leaves me in juniors. I can find about one shirt in every 100 that isn't boldly colored (i'm talking about neons), plastered with name brands, or cheaply made (and I'm not talking about price).

It's not really a trend, wearing name brands plastered over everything has been going on since the 90s. (I can't speak for before then because I'm only 16 ;) ) Also, if you look in the right places, those brand name shirts don't have to be so expensive. I recently got 2 shirts from American Eagle for 4.98 and 8.98 each.

For the 12 year old girl, they might still be into Justice. A little pricy sometimes but you have to know the deals before you go shopping. Then the usuals like Aeropostale, American Eagle, Hollister, and Abercrombie and Fitch. A & F has a kids store which is cheaper, but still expensive nonetheless. For the 15 year old boy, most of the guys I know are into PacSun and American Eagle.

DD loves her Aeropostle clothes, and I appreciate their sales.:goodvibes

Have you tried Old Navy and the Gap?
Just be careful, their sweatshirts have their names on them too, but some shirts don't.

I guess I have to ask why do you care? Its what they want, so why wouldn't you buy what it is they want and are happy with? Would you rather spend your money on something they don't want and wouldn't be happy with?

The niece won't wear Old Navy. Neither will my cousin's kids. These are the kids I have to buy for. 2- twelve year old girls and a 15 year old boy.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat. It was awesome before my niece's town got an Old Navy. Then she thought it was really cool.

Guess jeans with the triangle label had just come out when I was their age, and I remember having to have them. My mom couldn't afford them and my uncles always bought them for me when I visited.

I really don't care what is on the shirts of other people, it's their choice. Polo, Brooks Bros, Calvin Klein, Nautica, and most other brands have some sort of logo on their clothing. It isn't anything new and if anyone doesn't want to promote a brand they don't like they can choose not to buy it.

I don't know why anyone would care what brand someone else is wearing.

How about giving them a gift card to a book store or movie theater?

I'm confused!

You are asking if anyone knows what 12 and 15 y/o are into but your own niece and nephew already gave you their answers. Because you don't like the clothes THEY WANT, you are going to search for other ideas based on what strangers tell you? Why not just listen to what your niece and nephew tell you? :confused3

So you do recognize that kids (even back in your day) wanted designer clothes. In your case, the cool uncle came through for you. Why not be the cool aunt and get them an a shirt from the store they want clothes from? I don't get what the big deal is. :confused3 Maybe I am missing something.

That's what I was thinking too. If it's a gift for somebody else, why does it have to be something you would like?

I agree with Lisa. I have a DD11 and the label is everything. A zip up hoodie from Abercrombie or Hollister is "the" item to have and the more obvious/obnoxious the label the better. Subtle is not the way to go. Aeropostale is also OK, American Eagle is not. DD wears a lot of Justice stuff, but not with the name plastered across the front - Justice is not as cool in middle school. Old Navy is ok here but not considered trendy, Gap is not OK in any way shape or form.

The nice thing about a zip up hoodie is that they wear it over everything and it doesn't need to be washed as often, so they get lots of mileage out of it with the "cool name" factor.

There are several of us buying stuff for these kids. I'm certain that there will be repeats. I will probably succumb to what they want.

I do notice that the pieces I buy from these stores that don't have the big name across the front do not get the wear that the logo plastered shirts do.

I guess because my own kid isn't a teenager yet, it makes me cringe to go into these stores. I went to Abercrombie (the store for the younger set) and it was still over the top with their suggestiveness. When I bought something for my nephew (something he asked for last year) from A&F, I had to carry around a bag that had a young boy's nude chest around for the rest of my shopping trip, with my DD(5) at the time, non-stop questioning the boy on the bag.

The style for these girls are to wear their shirts skin-tight, and my niece is already showing signs of anorexia. She didn't eat any Thanksgiving dinner, and pushed the little bit of stuff around her plate. I knew she had been at her dad's house, and he said... "she ate a half a bowl of cereal this morning." It's been that way for several months now. She wears a size 0 at these stores, and they still hang loose on her. She is 5'3. She noticed me looking at her oddly, and said.. "It's cold, I'm going to go put on my jacket." Well, it wasn't cold at all. We were all quite toasty in there, actually. At the beach, she was scary skinny. She's a thin girl anyway, but I've never seen her look like that before, and is boy crazy. I was boy crazy, but I actually had a good dad in my life, and her's stinks. She'll do whatever she can for boy attention. At the beach, she walked up to this boy and said, "I think you're cute. You should come see me later." I about died. She looks 16.

I guess I'm just kind of over the new age of tween/teen. I got really frustrated because I had to make my cousin's kids put their phones up so they would stop texting nonstop and actually look up from their phones when I took them on vacation this past spring break. I know we have all had our annoying ages, but this particular set is hard for me to deal with. Thankfully, they are not all like that, and hopefully it's about being in a small town with nothing else to do. This kid needs guidance, and I'm not there to give it to her. Her mother gives her none (mom's older two kids by first marriage have both tried to commit suicide), and her father is a self-centered, redneck loser. He cannot be bothered. They are divorced and the mom uses her daughter against her dad. It's all a shame.

The clothes, when in reality, have nothing to do with all of this, and is just a symptom... but it's about the only thing I can do (not encourage). Before she got older, she loved being around me, but now that she is older and knows that I'm wise on what she is doing... she rolls her eyes at me and gets attitude.

I think the bookstore is a good call, even though it'll probably go unused. I did buy her a nice handbag. I usually go all out, but I'm not going to go crazy like I usually do this year.

I'm sure I'll get flamed somehow.. if I don't reply immediately, it's because I'm at Homegoods.

I love the hoodies! They cover up some much more skin than other fashion trends!:thumbsup2 Aeropastle has great sales, I got DS a hoodie for Christmas for $11!:cool1:

Honestly, I love hoodies, myself, and I'm addicted to Lucky Brand. :thumbsup2

I'm just over the three kids I happen to be associated with, and when I picture them in my head.. it's how I picture them.

I love them, but I am not diggin' this age with them. At least my cousin's two kids are straight-A'ers.

Wow, my daughter has just discovered Aero and I'm fine with that. I wasn't big into trends when I was her age, though I guess I had some -- Levi button flies, Izods, Calvin Klein jeans, Nikes, etc.

I just don't see the big deal. Kids are kids -- they're not a whole lot different from when we were kids. They have texting, my friends and I had notebooks... we wrote each other letters and passed them back and forth all day, then talked on the phone all night.

Maybe I'm still just a big kid, but I get them.

You're right, and with my cousin's kids (they're like my niece and nephew b/c i'm the only family they have nearby and i'm even one state over).. I can see this. They're just being kids.

With my niece, she's troubled and I feel helpless. When I'm with her, I try to show her that there is a different side of life than the one she is shown, but I feel sometimes that she is a lost cause. My DFil would be so upset. He knew she would head down this path, and told me to please watch over her as he knew his son wouldn't. My MIL makes the situation worse. She spoils her with whatever she wants, but what the child needs is guidance and my MIL doesn't have it to show her.

I've had to limit my own DD's contact with her because when my DD spends time with her, she comes home saying things about being skinny and not liking fat people. I have also caught her repeating things that she has heard my niece say to her boyfriend. I finally told my MIL that the contact had to stop and that if my DD6 spends the night with her that the niece can't come.

I went through something similar with my niece. I dont think its so much the brand of clothing as much as it is you do not approve of her actions, which is making it hard for you to get in the holiday spirit by giving her anything.

Sometimes they are a lost cause. :confused3 My niece (DH side of the family) got pregnant at 15, has been on some drug or another since she was probably about 11. She is now 22 and has a 6, 2 and 1 year old. She is still on drugs. My DH called the CPS on them (she and her husband) because they neglect/abuse their kids. The whole family found out, and guess who the bad guy is?? Why its *ME* of course! Apparently, its all my fault. So now we are not allowed any contact with the kids, and my wonderful MIL is trying to guilt my DH into buying a big Christmas for the kids that we cant ever see again. whatever, DH and I refuse to spend any money on kids who are being raised to think we are horrible people. my point is that you can not be responsible for other people. Your niece will either shape up or go down a really tough road. But there really isnt anything you can do about it.

but on a bright note, it will be a cold day in heck before I speak to either my MIL ( HORRID woman anyway!) or FIL. And thats my vent for today.

I agree! I'm sick of the billboard shirts/hoodies too!!

I would get them a target, barnes and noble/borders/movie theatre, ect gift certificate.

Plus I think the prices are outrageous for those things.......

Have you tried Kohls, JCPenny, Target, TJMaxx, Rue21 (Especially this store. Very trendy and really good prices) or Sears? Those are my favorite places to get clothes. Cheap and super cute! I don't like Hollister or any of those stores just because the prices are crazy, and I don't like their clothes. A lot of kids at school still wear them and I don't have a problem with it, it's just not what I like.

My BIL is an alcoholic, and is angry sober and drunk. My DH saw my MIL grab my niece by the face AT A CLEMSON BALL GAME a few weeks back. He had to get onto her. MIL not realizing he saw her got really embarrassed and then started crying and faking pain in her belly. Unbelievable.

I can't believe that you're being blamed for your niece's behavior. That's insane. 3 kids by 22 is crazy. I'm so sorry you're going through this. :(

I got her a jewelry box/stash box at Homegoods. I'm a photographer, and took some really nice photos of her this past summer at the beach. I'm going to get one put on canvas for her, and that'll be it for her Christmas this year. I appreciate the advice!! :)

Thanks Snow White! It's good to hear from a younger person on their opinion! We do have a Rue21 and a few other stores I had not thought about that they do not have at their local mall (i'm in Atlanta.. so maybe H&M?) Thanks! :goodvibes
