Now for a heartwarming story: This past weekend, one of my former foster kids came to visit. Emily, 12, is Hispanic and wanted me to take her to get some Mexican candy. We have an area in Detroit called Mexicantown so off we went to search for some candy. There is one main drag and pretty much everything is on there. As we were driving, Emily recognized a street her cousins lived on, a store she thought her family once owned and a restaurant she thought her brother had painted a mural on. We find a grocery store and look for this candy. Jim is down the cookie aisle putting all kinds of stuff in the cart and Emily and Alexa come back with an arm full of candy. Not even out of the parking lot, they start opening up all this stuff so being the only "adult" I make them put it all away so we can go eat lunch first. Emily suggested the "mural" restaurant so we head back and find it. We go in and get seated. A waitress bring us some chips when Emily jumps out of her seat and throws her arms around the waitress and starts crying! Then the waitress is crying! I have absolutely no idea what is going on so I ask the waitress if she knows Emily. Through her sobs she says "This is my sister!". They were all separated when they went into care and no one has had contact since. Well by this time, I am crying, Jim has tears in his eyes and we are all stunned! What are the odds??? Emily's sister had just started working at that restaurant 2 weeks earlier! Definitely one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed! I got her information and then gave it to Emily's adoptive mother. Hopefully they will get to stay in touch!
