Ignore. Just practicing posting pics

That is some great stuff KFK!! I love looking at old maps to see what has changed. It's funny how the names of most loops haven't changed over the years, but it seems that the 500 loop has had at least 3 names. It's currently Buffalo Bend. We have previously noted it being called Terry Trail, named after a defunct line of Fleetwood TT's by that name. And according to your map from March 1977, it was called something different that I can't quite make out...possibly Tupelo Trail. Unless it says Terry Trail and my eyes are just going bad on me. Can you tell on the original what it says KFK?

DaveInTN- you are right- the 500 loop is called Tupelo Trail on that map.

KFK- is this the trip where y'all stayed in the trailer home? If so, your map shows that you were in the 2100 loop. Which means that maybe the trailers were not always in the 500 loop.

River Country admission was only $3.00 back then? Wow.

Did anyone else notice on the map that the Bike Barn was located in the area where the dog park is now. And, that area is called the Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area.

Also, the large canal that borders the 1500, 1600 and 1800 loops has a name: Chickasaw Creek.

The description of Marshmallow Marsh mentions a hike to the campfire area after the canoe ride. Based on some earlier photos posted on this thread, I thought the campfire area was right on Bay Lake across the canal outfall from the old cabin that is still there. But, that would not have required a hike from the canoe dock. Those photos could have been staged for publicity. I wonder where the campfire really was?

The descriptions of the cruises offered on Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon sound interesting. There was a day and a night cruise. On paddle-wheel boats. I'll bet those were interesting.

More awesomeness all the way around.

Thanks, KFK and KFM!

ETA- KFK- it looks like there are other creek names in the canal near the Meadow Trading Post, and then just below Tupelo Trail. What does the map call those canals?

The reservation ticket states $45.00 a night in the TTs......a partial hookup is costing me about $70 a night this coming July!!!

Awesome! Love the World News especially. Keep on a diggin' through her stuff! :cheer2:

You keep swimming and I'll keep digging Dory! I love the World News too! I remember reading it over and over while at WDW.

Thanks! It is indeed Tupelo Trail. I believe TCD may have already answered that question. Glad you're enjoying the maps...I have plenty more!;)

Yes, TCD '77 was the year of the FW TT and the plaid pants! Yes, we were in 2100 loop Bobcat Bend. There's a pic of us w/the sign early in the thread.

Regarding Marshmallow Marsh....check this out!

Yes indeed, the campfire was on Bay Lake! It says the meetin' place was behind Meadows TP. Perhaps the Canoe Excursion ran either N & S Osceola Creeks until running into Chickasaw Creek or Chickasaw creek the whole way to Wilderness Swamp Trail, then a short hike to Bay Lake. What say you?

The creek starting at the Bike Barn is North Osceola Creek until it reaches the fishing hole and after the fishing hole it changes to South Osceola Creek.

Who remembers this?

Wish we could even rent a site for those prices! We're gonna be there in July too! Maybe we'll see you there!

I'm so glad that I chose to ignore this thread. This is indeed the best thread of 2010!

I love ignoring this thread! :)

This is NOT the totem pole from the photo of Fort Wilderness. But it is A totem pole found in the Wilderness Lodge circa 2004.

I could be wrong, but this might be the totem pole that DisCamper's friend was referring to? If I were to be friends with DisCamper (here's hoping!) :rotfl2: and heard of this thread, I might say "yeah, there's a totem pole at WL!" not knowing that it's different.

This doesn't really help much (especially since DisCamper will be confirming it for us in a few days), but I just wanted be a part of the coolest thread of 2010!! :yay:

Who remembers this?

Oh, me, me, me! It's actually the only meal we ever had at WDW when I was growing up. :D I recall having some yummy chocolate chip muffins.

I couldn't remember what it was called when I tried to explain it to DH, though. I think he thought I was crazy - heck, I was starting to think I was crazy! So thanks for posting this! :cheer2: It did exist!

Thanks for weighing in! We can only wait on DisCampers investigation to be complete. I am still hopeful! Maybe the totem pole he is referring to is somewhere else at the W.L. There is a totem pole over by the Whispering Canyon. I wonder....... Maybe I need to look up a pic and compare......Think I will a little later today!

Glad to do it! I nearly squealed like a 4 year old when I read your post! I could feel your excitement! You are NOT crazy! It def did exist! Wish they would bring back some of those types of things! We'd definitely participate!

Still ignoring and enjoying

Glad to hear it. Don't be a stranger, join right in more often! :goodvibes

There will be more goodies later on tonight after DH goes to work and the kiddos are in bed!

Yeehaw! popcorn::

I never got to go to the Country Morning Jamboree or the Marshmallow Marsh Canoe Excursion but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the brochures. So cool!

And the Jamboree starred Melvin the Moose from the Country Bears. Love that moose!

You are making me want to head to flea markets and garage sales to search for old Disney/Fort memorabilia. Somebody else probably had a mom who kept it all and they care nothing about it. What a treasure you have there! :woohoo:

Hey KK-

That totem pole is in the WL lobby. It is made up from Disney characters. While it is a great totem pole, I don't think it was ever at FW.

I don't remember totem poles ever being outside of WL.

But, there are lots of things I don't remember, so don't mind me.

Speaking of totem poles, there used to be some in front of the Settlement Trading Post, where the covered wagon is now. Here is a photo of my oldest DD from back in the day:

(You can see the Crockett's Tavern porch there in the background)

And here are a couple of shots of an old Wilderness Home and one of the old rental golf carts (before the new green ones came in):

My oldest DD is about to turn 19 years old next month, so I am guessing these photos are from 14-15 years ago.

This thread just keeps getting better and better.

I have never seen some of the Marshmallow Marsh information that you posted KFK, so thanks!

I still am not sure exactly what happened during the Marshmallow Marsh event. I understand the canoe part. I don’t understand the hike part.

This description, from KFK’s materials, says that the Marshmallow Marsh event is a nature walk, a marshmallow roast, and a sing along, all in one:

MM1.jpg

And, this description, also from KFK’s scan also says that a hike was involved:

MM2-1.jpg

In this photo, provided by IDWD, it looks like there is a dock on the side of the canal. This is where Chickasaw Creek (I now have a proper name to call this drainage ditch) feeds into Bay Lake:

MM3.jpg

Here is an aerial shot of the same area depicted in IDWD’s photo from the Orange County Property Appraiser’s Website:

MM4-1.jpg

I marked the area where the canoe dock may have been with a red star. From the Marshmallow Marsh campfire photos that were posted, I think the photos were taken in the area of the yellow star, but they also could have been taken from the area of the blue star.

Here is a photo of the same area from Bing:

MM5.jpg

What confuses me is that if the canoes did dock where I have indicated, then where did the hike come in? I would have to guess that they took advantage of the Wilderness Swamp Trail and its boardwalk. So, perhaps the canoes docked, and then the campers were guided over the bridge, took a hike along the trail, and then came back to one of the areas indicated.
Think about this for a minute. They took guests out in canoes, in the dark, and had them hike, in the dark, have a campfire, and then get back in the canoes and paddle back. In the dark. It amazes me. Those truly were the good old days.

I found a couple of referenced on-line to Marshmallow Marsh. This one is from the Walt Dated World website:

MM6.jpg

Here’s a link to that site: Walt Dated World article on Marshmallow Marsh

This is from the Main Street Gazette website:

I know that old map is not even close to being accurate, but note that the Marshmallow Marsh activity is shown on the side of Chickasaw Creek that I marked with the blue star.

Oh, and about the Chip and Dale Breakfast. This is something that I heard about, and even posted about. Here’s an old thread from the Disboards:

Disboard Post re Melvin The Moose Breakfast Show

And, here is a photo of the kazoos that they gave out at the Breakfast:

Man, what fun that must have been!

And, KFK says there's more!

Bring it!

This is the most fun I ever had ignoring anything! :woohoo:

TCD that info is just incredible. Love all of it! Now to go read the Melvin the Moose links you provided. Thanks! :thumbsup2

Rog- You are a wizard! That graphic is amazing. I am in awe that you can take a photo from a scan of a brochure posted on a message board and make it into a work of art! Great job!
