Just saw Moana for the first time a couple of days ago, and wow was it awesome! I have "Away Away!" stuck in my head!

Anyway, some aspects of the plot of Moana are similar to an obscure 2002 movie called Whale Rider.

Whale Rider is a live-action movie that takes place in modern-day New Zealand. A 12-year-old girl, Paikea, is set to become her tribe's Chieftess, but her grandfather opposes her because she's a girl. It's an intensely beautiful story of her relationship with the ocean, and being The Chosen One, and all that. If you get a chance, check it out! It's on Netflix right now.

Whale Rider is not a movie for children under 13 (there are some crude sexual jokes and there's a pretty intense death scene). Also, it moves almost painfully slowly. It takes place over the course of about 72 hours (excluding flashbacks) and, according to some reviewers, there's no plot. That's not true; there is a plot, but it's subtle and not the focus of the movie.

Give it a chance if you haven't seen it!

I've actually seen that one! It's been years so I don't remember very well, but I remember I enjoyed it. Maybe I'll see if DD wants to watch it. :)

How old is DD? Like I said, there's a pretty intense death scene and a couple of crude sexual jokes.

My oldest is 15 so we're good to go. Youngest is 9 (won't be watching).

Is Whale Rider considered obscure? She was nominated for an Oscar for it! I've seen it several times, but admittedly I'm a whale geek. :)

Well, yeah. By American standards anyway. Obscure movies get nominated for, and win, Academy Awards all the time.

I've seen it! It was a beautiful, beautiful film, the kind of Cinema I adore.

And if you want more with that touch of NZ humour instead of the more serious sides, see Hunt for the Wilderpeople! There is also Boy, which most people find amusing, although I found aspects a wee bit sad. Not crying sad though.

See: Moonlight, which was one of the most moving movies (is that dumb to say?) I've ever seen. Some of my pretentiously intellectual friends haven't seen it even. It was one of those movies like "Kids" or "Requiem for a Dream" where you don't know what to think, but know you should see it again.

I remember Whale Rider being great back in the day. I'll have to re-watch it soon for sure. Great one to point out.
