If you have a tattoo would it bother you?

This is going to be my next one. I like it because it's the Capricorn symbol and it's also the year I was born. Blue is my favourite colour so it's perfect. I want to get it on my inner wrist.

If the situation is appropriate, I always ask someone about their tattoo if it's visible. There's usually always an interesting story associated with them and they've all been eager to tell it in every instance.

It doesn't bother me when people ask. If it did, I shouldn't have gotten them. Some of mine aren't particularly small but all can be covered by normal clothing so I guess if I wanted to avoid conversation about them I could just dress accordingly.

Thanks for all your replies. So I guess I can continue to ask and talk with them about their tattoos. The people that I have talked to have always seemed to enjoy telling me about them but you never know right. It didn't occur to me that I was doing something wrong until I was told I was.

Never had a tattoo and no desire to get one, and yet I love looking at others tattoos. I also really enjoy watching Ink Master. Some tattoos are truly pieces of art.

I can understand not allowing visible or offensive tattoos in certain careers, but if you can cover it during business hours then who cares? If no one knows it's there, how can they be offended?

Honestly, if a person has visible tattoos they should expect people to ask about them (in a social setting, not a complete stranger in the grocery store).

As an aside, if I didn't hire people with tattoos I would have no employees. A good 75% (at minimum) of the people I have hired over the past 5 years have had visible tattoos. My daughter who is a vet assistant (Vet Tech) got a tattoo on her wrist when she was going to school and I was concerned that it would be a negative in her getting a job. Thankfully, it hasn't.

A polite question is ALWAYS better than an embarrassed stare.

What a great quote! I'm in education, and I can see it applying to a lot of things besides tattoos.

As for the OP, I don't have one, but on the few occasions I've asked about someone else's, I've got nothing but positive responses! People have generally wanted to share the story because the tattoo means something to them.

I got my first tat at age 47. I'd always wanted one but my mom saying 'you'll be sorry when you're old' kept playing in my head. I went big and bold with the first one. The artist did a caricature of my various cats we've owned over the years. (we weren't blessed with kids, but do have many 4 legged ones.) I LOVE it. It's on my lower leg. I had no idea I would love having it as much as I do. On my 49th birthday this year, I got another on the other leg bigger than the first.

People who know me were very surprised to find I had any art. I wear pants to work and they are not visible. They make me happy. If someone wants to judge me by them......it's their problem, not mine.

I have my husbands initials on my left ring finger for about 4 years now, only a handful of people have ever asked about it.
I just started a new part time office job and wondered if anyone would say anything or ask me to cover it, nothing yet.

I don't have a tattoo and won't be getting one. On another one of my boards someone posted that tattoos are really bad and he wouldn't hire anyone who had one. Now I see people all the time who have tattoos and have talked to a couple about their tattoos. I have heard some very interesting stories and thoughts put into their tattoos. But now I wonder if me asking them about their tattoos were not the thing to do. I am just really interested in them. I am not upset by them just interested. Should I not be asking?

Depending on his business, pretty small minded if you pass a candidate who may be more qualified just for a tattoo. :confused3

Asking is fine. I got my 1st & only so far at 50. It is an ankle bracelet with my DS & DGD's initials dangling. My job now has a new policy on tattoos so if I want anymore I need to ask for permission & submit the design & placement.

@tigercat this photo says it all really, doctor dressed professionally, but has tattoos

You'd be shocked how many people in medical field have tattoos. My hospital has really relaxed the policy-no offensive ones visible (vs no tattoos visible period). But there are tattoos on display that just beautiful. Also-in my part of the country many people have some ink anyway LOL!

LOL-got my first ( and so far only) at 44! Band around my ankle with my husband and my initials in front intertwined and the kids initials woven in around the side. My DH actually doesn't like tattoos but he has come to love mine (if you knew my DH this HUGE for him). Surprisingly it took my son longer to accept the tattoo. He was pretty upset at first that I came home "different" (got it on a trip to Las Vegas-had been thinking about design for ~ a year). We also watch Ink Master together and he now appreciates the art.

And people who haven't seen me in a dress or shorts etc are somewhat shocked too. Now that I've had it a couple years most people know. I love it!

I always thought that people with tattoos in visible places got them because they wanted people to see and talk about them.
Most of the people I know who are inked view it as art and they want to share it. Otherwise they wouldn't post them on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and go around saying "look what I got this weekend"

You're putting the cart before the horse.

I am 50 no tattoos. But I do enjoy them on others. I saw one that I totally would have gotten if I was younger. In Disney I met a girl with an amazing tattoo. It was the girl from the Haunted Mansion stretching room. (The ballet one) it was perfect. Beautiful coloring. Just amazing. And huge! It took her entire shoulder.

Would I hire someone with one? I suppose it would depend on the what and where on the tattoo.

This is so funny you brought this up because today my daughters and I were talking about the new tattoo my nephew got while we were at the beach this past week. My DD proceeded to tell me that Kim Kardashian was on a tv show recently and the host asked her if she had any tattoo's. She said", uh no, would you put a bumper sticker on a Bently?!" Ok she is the most narsacistic person in the world, but I have to say I giggled.

We get lots of compliments on ours, my Wife especially. We don't mind talking about them. Ours are all large and very visible. Sometimes strangers will touch though, and that's kind of weird.

This exactly!! I have a Star Wars half sleeve that I love to show off, but it completely weirds me out when strangers just run up and touch it (which happens more than you would think). I'm not a Pat the Bunny book!!:rotfl:

Asking is no problem. I can't stand when people around me talk about my tattoo and stare at it but won't ask about it. I love to share a out mine.

I don't agree with the rule of not hiring people with tattoos. You can't see mine in business attire so it shouldn't keep me from the job.

Same here, I love my tattoos and talking about them if someone asks, or even a "nice tattoo" is always appreciated :)

Most people are pretty surprised when they find out I have tattoos (currently have 8). I keep them covered at work most of the time, especially if we have clients in. I try not to show them at work because I know some people still find them controversial (FYI: I work for a consulting firm and work with a lot of older engineers, so it tends to be a more conservative environment).

I want to see it now! My newest tattoo is a TIE Interceptor :) My husband thinks I should get a full Star Wars leg piece.

Tattoos have always interested me because so many people have them and there are usually stories behind them.

I've always wanted one but my husband doesn't like them so I never got any - we got married when we were 19 - before I wanted one.

My sister has one that she got after her latest brain tumor surgery - it's to celebrate surviving breast cancer and 2 cancerous brain tumors. She is one tough cookie!

Here you go! :-) And yes, definitely do the leg piece! I have the duel from the orginal ROTJ poster on my shoulder and Anakin/Obi-Wan from ROTS on my leg.
