If you had a choice

We're a family of 5...but I like the king and the potential for private couple time (happens infrequently on family vacations...but hey, I can dream, can't I?). Typically though our 2 youngest stay in the king with us and our oldest sleeps on the pull out...unless he sleepwalks in to the king also...which results in a game of musical beds where an adult gives up and heads for the pull out. We have yet to get a 2br for the 5 of us...our youngest is a baby. I'm hoping the 2br will work for us when she gets older....meaning, I hope the older kids mature enough to stay in their own room!

What I'd like most is perhaps a trundle under the king (in addition to whatever is in the living area)..could be rolled into the living area or kept in the bedroom. And/Or a murphy bed instead of a pull out as Dean mentioned....would be so much more comfortable. I'm hesitant to invite guests if anyone will end up on the pull out!

I do like the king in that I can sleep in the same bed with my dh...even if its with some kids. In 2 queen rooms we generally end up separated...boys in one bed, girls in the other.

It is forbidden but I suspect they'd look the other way in an emergency.

The one bedroom is designed for 2 people> I for one never understand how people can use the living room for a bedroom unless you have a surprise vistor for an evening. I think this is just one more reason why DVC is going down hill, that is too many people going over the capacity of a one bedroom and other rooms also. If you want a flop house I am sure ;you can find plenty off campus.

We like our space at home and love it at our DVC home as well. I love the King size beds and would hate to see them replaced by two Queens. Having said that I can understand why some would like them, just not us.

LOL to that last one!:jester:

We would NOT want two queens in the master. We don't vacation to have others share our room. We usually get a 2 bedroom for 3 people, so we probably aren't a good example. I do think a nice quality roll-a-way would be a better option than the sleep sofa though. Either that or a nice Murhpy bed. At OKW, there is so much storage over in that big side bar, that a murphy bed would fit well there. I still would probably get a 2 bedroom though, because I want my bathroom to be private also. A murphy bed in the living room would require a 3/4 bath in the hall too, kind of like the GVs at OKW.

This is interesting, when I first joined DVC, I posted this question as well and of course got flamed. It certainly is not a money issue with us, we own 1,000 points. It is just that when my kids were toddlers they didn't want to be in a room that was fairly far away from ours in a strange place. So what we ended up doing when they were that age, we ended up getting a 2 Bedroom and all 4 of us slept in the studio, but then we had the Living Room during the day to spread out. It just seemed like a bit of a waste, but I wanted all the room of the Living Room/ Kitchen to spread out with during the day so this is what we did. Of course this was only an issue for a couple of years and they now sleep in the 2nd bedroom by themselves just fine.

Ditto!

We like the privacy of the king master bedroom, and really wouldn't want the 2 queen set-up. I have no problem with the kids sleeping in the "living room". After all...we really enjoy the flop-house feel...that makes DVC a real home away from home.

For DVC stays at WDW, we tend to be busier and more exhausted at night. We generally are not up late hosting wine and cheese parties in the living room so a "dual use living room/flop-room" fits fine with our vacation style.

I am with the poster that suggested the trundle under the masterbedroom bed. Not in all units but in some as an option,( Much like the 2 queens option at BCV, Versus the sofa bed in the second bedroom) The beds are certainly high enough to accomadate this.

I am in the same situation my kids are getting to big to sleep with me, But I don't want them away from me.... down the hall. It just doesn't work for me. we currently have the twins in bed with me ( SO I need that King) And Ds 10 on a raised aerobed in the master bedroom as well. I hate to use the sofa bed. It defeats the purpose of having the living area for me if someone is sleeping there. I might as well get a studio at that point.

We would love to have 2 queens in the MB. We have a king at home but wouldn't mind a queen on vacation. :D We have friends with three young children who go to Disney yearly and stay in deluxe resorts that sleep 5. Perfect DVC candidates, right? They didn't do it becasue of the one bedroom only sleeping 4 thing. BTW, the guide assured them repeatedly that they could put 5 in a one bedroom with an areobed and get a 5th room key. He even said they could get a 5th set of towels for a small fee. They just didn't feel comfortable doing that. The 3 kids are all under 7 and the youngest sleeps with them anyway! They thought a 2 bedroom would be a waste of space and money. I bet there are A LOT of families who feel this way. I know it's not the norm in the timeshare industry. But, DVC isn't a normal timeshare. I think the jump from 4 to 8 is a lot. There should be an option for families in between those numbers and yes, I know lots of people disagree with me! :wave2:

NMW I agree that a 2 bedroom is to much we are a family of 5 and use a studio because we do not like the single king in the master bedroom it makes more sence to have 2 queens in there the room is plenty big enough for it.

Those are my points. Oh well. Thanks for sharing . . . and thanks to all for no flaming . . . well almost none! These are just opinions, right?

I would also like the option of the 2 queens. Great for families with young kids. We are used to kids sleeping with us and when we get a 1-bedroom, it's usually 1 parent in the master with the kids, the other parent on the sofa. We often just get a studio because the sleep layout is best, especially at OKW. A 2-bedroom is just too many points blown for 4 people.

I think DVC is addressing this to some extent by adding the high-quality "newfangled" sofa beds. If these are as comfy as people claim, I'll be happy.

Almost no flaming. So a studio must be for 1 person since its half the size of a 1 bedroom.

I find it strange that a person can get two studios, sleep 8, take up 700 sq ft, or they can get a 1 bedroom, only sleep 4, and take up 700 sq. ft. I vote for 5 for the 1 bedroom.

hahaha i have to laugh a bit here. Being female and 51 - I am very hot at night. I need my space or I really suffer!

We have a king bed here - a Select Comfort - and 6 nights out of 7, DH is sleeping on my side and I have about 10" of space. Not to mention the two cats. And not to mention, my Sleep Number 35 becomes a 50 when he's on my side too.

And when we stay at OKW with friends and take the 2nd br, I look forward to having my own queen size bed to stay cool. Invariably, DH moves over into "my" bed in the middle of the night.

So king or 2 queens - it matters not to me! DH will find a way to put the two of us in the smallest space possible.

Ok, so enough with the stories - my real vote for this would be a king bed just like it is.

I found this statement almost ludicrous! I have lost way too many precious people in my life; friends, grandparents, cousins, a niece, I even had a friend who at twenty five has just beat breast cancer. Life is way too short not to completely max out the accomodations that I have paid for with extra friends and family (within the stated limits of course).

If a person would find it offensive to sleep on a couch to enjoy your company, then they are not your friend in the first place.

I look forward to 50 more years of fabulous memories created at the most magical place on earth.

In June 1999 my family of 15 took its first vacation to WDW. Three generations and we still vividely recall the memories to this day. Not once have the kids said, "Oh that was a terrible vacation I had to sleep on the sofa bed.":chat:

Colleen,

Your will be very happy with the new models. The new pullouts are more of a flip-out. They are great, very sturdy feeling, firm and very comfortable. They are a drastic improvement over the traditional pullouts. I also think they will have a longer life than the current sofa-beds.

What sold us is the king size bed in the private bedroom AND the kitchen. Granted, we do not have children and some of the issues people have come up with don't apply to us, but I don't have my in-laws/nephews/nieces/friends sleeping with me in my bedroom at home, and I don't think we'd survive them (the inlaws at least) if we couldn't close and lock the door. When we're full at home, people sleep on the sofa, so when we're full at Home, they can do it there as well...more comfortably even. :-)

I also don't have 2 queens in my master bedroom at home. 1 princess and 2 dogs who think they're royalty, but we only have the 1 bed. :-)

Just my opinion.

We're a family of four, with two boys nearing their teens. For us, I prefer the current 1 BR configuration. But a murphy bed over the current sofa-bed would be much better. The sofa-beds are terrible IMO...For the money we've invested, 1/2 my family gets second-rate bedding.

This fall we'll be trying out a 2br for just the four of us. I'm a little nervous we'll be spoiled by extra room, bath and proper bedding.

Based on my family situation, here's what I'd go with...

Studio: King + sofa... for trips without kids.
1BR: King + murphy... for trips with kids
2BR: King + murphy + 2 queen... for trips with extra family members. The more beds the better.
GV: Don't know. I'm affraid to to try one. Bringing my family together in a GV would not be the best good idea...I'd probably go with separate Studios.

Overall.... I'd prefer we do NOT offer varieties of room configurations. It's one less thing to worry about.

I'm with you timC on the studio. A king size bed would have been fabulous. We would save a lot of points!
