If you could only save 5 things....

Ok, I am speaking from experience here as we lost our house to Hurricane Katrina. If you have children make sure you take their baby books. Wedding and baby photos. Jewelery and anything that is sentimental to you. When we were packing to leave I told my DD9 to pack what was most important to her. Of course never thinking that we would not be returning. She had a suitcase with 16 pairs of shoes, nothing else, just shoes. A girl after my own heart. Thank goodness I checked her stuff before we left. But as you can see different things have different meanings to each of us. Not to mention all that boring insurance stuff. You really do need it!!!!!!!!!!

I live near one of the mountains that went up in flames last September and we were asked to leave in case of emergency. I knew we would be fine it was a matter of only one road leading hundreds of households out and emergency wouldn't be able to get in.

Alice took her build a bear Unicorn that she has had for years, a couple of books, her Epcot mask she made last year, her shoes and some little toys like My Little Pony.

I grabbed the kid and the cat of course, a couple of boxes of photos I have, some clothes and shoes, my phone book and some jewelry including a locket my dad gave me when I was 8 or 9. As I was walking through the house it occured to me that for the most part everything in the house wasn't that important and replaceable.

I knew we were never in any danger, but I was able to come back to the house a couple days later with new eyes of what is really necessary.

Miss Inga Depointe what a great idea of recording your childrens voices!

This is what I have in my hurricane/emergency kit:
Family and Friend Photos on CD.
Wedding video
All bank account information, liability information, other financial information.
Photos on CD of every big-ticketed item in our house, plus info about each item (product number, serial number, etc.) I also have receipts for all these items.
Photos of our house (inside and out) on CD.
Email addresses and IM lists on CD.
Passports, SS cards, birth certificates, vehicle information, insurance information, marriage information, etc.
This all fits in one medium-size rubbermaid container.

I have a second LARGE rubbermaid contrainer that has our other hurricane supplies (battery lantern, flashlights, air mattress, food, some clothes, toiletries etc.) This is the secondary item I would grab.

We have acres and acres of brush behind our house, and here in California we are known to have really bad fire seasons, and we've always lived near areas that are potential targets. When fire season nears, I always have several plastic bins ready with all my pictures, albums, and other non-replaceable items that I would take with me in the event of a fire. We also have a backpack filled with toiletries and other things our family would need (though we have that handy year round). I also have all the pictures on my computer on disk, and I keep copies of them at my MIL's house. We have a fireproof safe that houses all our important documents. You never know, and when you have to evacuate you don't have a lot of time to gather up things.

That's a really good idea - I'm going to have to do that!

While I am definitely safe from hurricanes, I should have one of these in case of any emergency  - yours sounds so thorough! I'm going to have to get started!

1. All my pictures.

2. My computer, with all the pics from the last year and a half.

3. Camping equipment, this is already to go in the event of emergency, never know where you might have to spend the night.

4. Important papers.

5. Anything else I can grab as I run out the door, things like toiletries, food, water, clothes and my camera.

I have started a survival kit of sorts. I have an alcove under the stairs where I have put up shelves and that is where the camping equipment is. My scrapbooking stuff will go under there so it is in an easily accessable place. I have all of my photographs and albums together with my scrapbooking stuff. I really need to put the photos on my computer on CD's and put them and the important papers there as well.

Family photos and videotapes of our children. There wouldn't be time to save anything else. We have a LOT of photos and videotapes.

This thread is making me think I should get everything I want to take in one place! I like the Emergency Kit idea!

1. My Bible....too many notes in the margains...even though it's tattered, I don't want to buy a new one for the same reason.

2. My wedding video and home movies of my kids.

3. My scrapbooks and boxes of photos.

4. My laptop

5. Strong box with birth certificates, social securtiy cards and savings bonds.

My son
Tommy ( our old 1/2 blind 1/2 deaf weenier dog )
Then I would have to force my Dh ( who is a firefighter ) out of the house while he was trying to " Put it out"
If I had time my jewlery box because it has my Grandmother wedding ring that was brought over from Italy by my Great Grandmother .

Everything else can go up with the house as long as I have my kids around I can always remember when ....

1. My computer because well it has my pictures and all my music on it.
2. My safe box with my important papers and cash, I think I'm going to add a sheet with all my account information and phone numbers just in case as well.
3. My glasses and contact solution/case because I would probably be wearing my contacts at the time and wouldn't want to wear those all night.
4. My bon jovi crush tour dvd because I watch it all the time.
5. The cable sweater I am knitting I am putting so much work into it that I wouldn't want all my work to be a waste.

This is all assuming my kitty was with me as well. I couldn't leave him and my purse the purple one my boyfriend got me it's my favorite!
