If you could add a new room type to DVC, what would it be?

Haven't we done this at least 3 or 4 times before. The truth is that most of these options makes NO sense and are not feasible. They are specialty rooms that are not workable from a system standpoint. If it doesn't make sense for all units that size to be the way you suggest, no reason to do it.

OP here. Actually, what I was thinking about was for any new DVC's that might come along in the future - in those circumstances a lot of the options presented do make sense and would be feasible :). I realize that it would be costly, if not impossible, to change room arrangements in existing units. For instance, 2 queen beds usually will not fit where only 1 king bed had been before. Plus, those who bought in with the understanding that certain room types would be available, might be upset if these were replaced with an alternate arrangement. But, in a newly designed building it would not be too difficult, for example, to lay out the 1 bedroom units in such a way that either a king or 2 queens would work (maybe a little longer and narrower than the existing 1 bedrooms).

My thoughts were more along the lines that almost all of the existing DVC rooms fall into the same arrangements and that in the future it would be nice to see some alternatives to the existing options. We are already seeing some of this with the treehouse villas. There is also some precedent for having different sleeping arrangements within the same room classification. This May we are staying at BCV in one of the 2 bedroom units that has 2 queens in the studio part - I would love to see more of this type of option.

Glad to hear all the different ideas people have for what would work best for their travel style.

It's just DH and I so we stay in a studio. The room and kitchenette are perfect for us just the way they are, but the 1 thing that would love to see is a washer and dryer in the studio too. Since airfare is so high now and we live over 1000 miles away we do one big trip a year (12-14 days). We try to pack light to leave room for souveniers and do laundry twice during our stay. It would just be nice to be able to do it in our room.

As I noted, options like 2 queens in a 1 BR for about the same number of points are not workable. They could be physically done but they are not workable from a system standpoint because they would have to be a separate room type (booking cat) and the general demand for this type of room is a lot less. The only way you could even consider it would be a resort as large as SSR where there would be enough availability to make additional booking cat feasible. As I noted, we've had this discussion before and about 90-95% or more of the posts favor the current setup and are against that proposal. The only differences within the DVC system are between lockoff's and Dedicated with some variation from older to newer resorts (OWK 2 queens in studio/second). BCV is a special situation owing to a developer mistake that was caught too late to rectify and not in intentional happening and it has been a problem ever since. Their solution to making all dedicated 2 BR units have 2 queens was to change the design for the rooms they could and put a pull out queen for the rooms they couldn't. Personally I'm surprised they didn't get a lawsuit for that one and would have truly expected them (even Disney) to lose that one had it happened.

It's OK to have fantasy discussions, just realize that's what they are and don't kid yourself that they are real possibilities. The problem is these threads tend to include both fantasy and somewhat feasible suggestions, truly two different subjects.

It is fun to dream!

I, too, like the newer and different configurations that are beginning to be offered. With larger families and extended families traveling together, it is wonderful to have options. Disney must be hearing this from a number of DVCers and I appreciate their efforts.

I'd love to see a 4 bedroom villa, maybe with two master bedrooms. When we travel, we often take my parents and end up offering them the master b/c it doesn't seem right for us to take it and put kids in their room! So we give them the master and have kids in our room plus kids on the pullout in the living room (using a 2 BRM here-such a huge jump in points and space to go up to 3 brm). Love the kids, but would also love some privacy and a break from them! The only 3 bedroom villas we've stayed in were at OKW and wow - how spacious. They really could make a 4th bedroom somewhere and charge points accordingly. (Not changing OKW, but in a future DVC using similar square footage, that's all.)

I'd go with a "studio plus". A bit more space, a king bed - and since we're dreaming, a W/D would be nice, too.

My wish? Knock them all down except for OKW and rebuild them all as OKW layouts with different theming. With one booking category, no "near HH" category. It makes it so much easier to get a villa when most of them are nearly the same. When you start adding this or that category, this or that villa type, it makes it so much harder to get what you need.

Not to get into a disagreement with you, but this is just a chat forum & I'm not sure I understand why it matters if some of these "fantasies" are feasible & some aren't. The question was, "If you could add a new room type to DVC, what would it be?" It wasn't, "What new room types do you believe DVC will be most likely be adding in the future?"

As a PP mentioned, they have listened to customer feed-back & have offered a few more family options & hopefully they will offer even more going forward. I think most of us are intelligent enough to realize that all these ideas would not work for everyone, nor are we "kidding ourselves" that we will likely see most of them. It's not like we're drawing up drafts to submit to the DVC execs. They wouldn't take them anyway! ;)

It doesn't matter other than to realize which is which. I guess I'm flashing back to previous thread's on the same subject where many can't seem to tell the difference. To be honest, I don't think most members, including on this thread, really have a good understanding of the finances and mechanics involved in planning, building and managing a timeshare. At least a basic understanding is needed to decide what has potential and what does not. Rooms tend to be set up a certain way for a reason. It's based on industry research and experience. The standard 2 BR used to be sleep 6 with twins in the second but things have evolved in the last 25-30 years. Occasionally someone will try to make a variation work because it's something different. Ultimately the goal is always profit and that includes a consideration of the unit footprint, reservation issues, sales price, how fast sales go and the like.

It's fun to dream and be creative. Most of us are not architects nor will we be making DVC building decisions. But we do have ideas and we do like to share them. If someone isn't interested in reading this thread yet again then they don't need to. This is the first time I've seen it and I'm finding it interesting.

I like the idea that there are now sleeper chairs since my teenage kids don't like sleeping in the same bed. That could have been a suggestion made by a member.

I would also like to see floor plans like OKW or HH since more space in the living room of a 2bd would be great when we do have 6 people in there. I don't know how 8 people fit in that space. We always bring in an extra chair from the master bd.

I wish the THV could have a king in the master. WDW is the only place we get to sleep in one!

I would pay an extra point for bunk beds. While I was showing DD the pictures of AKL, where we plan on buying, I accidentally showed her a resort room with bunk beds. She was so excited when she saw them (they are pretty cool) and asked if we were going to get those.

Um, no...

I have been looking at a lot of TS layouts lately. One of the things I liked about some of them was they had a sleeper sofa in the bedrooms -- that would solve the single bed in the master bedroom problem.

But would you pay 20-30% more every year even when the kids are older teens?
