if you can stomach one more when will it be released type question

husband has been bitten by the photo bug and has decided he wants to buy me a upgraded body( camera body i mean, no wisecracks needed, ) and take over my rebel xt instead of a p&S as a "learner" camera...( i have told him definitely not of course, no upgrades for me. but i guess playing that tape recording of "30d 30d" every night after he fell asleep really did work )

so my question is, i remember a while before the pentax was released it was widely talked about, which was right around when i got my rebel and i think it was about 6 wks before release. i also think there is a photoshow in the spring and another in the fall( or maybe just pre-christmas is a good release time) so what i am wondering , if there will be a release of a new 30d replacement, when would the buzz about it, ie prerelease reviews, begin. is it a month or two or does canon usually keep things quiet till they release something...i know this is total speculation but it would be mid summer at the earliest till i get something and if i would hear a month or so later i would kick myself, i know some have said it's usually every 18 months or so between releases with canon so that would be Aug or so if that is really true...but i guess i wonder if that is in anyway accurate or just talk..

Obviously it is all speculation, but the speculation I have read is it should be released in the Fall. Some thought they would release it at the last big show where they showed the MarkIII.

I am sort of in the same boat your at, I would love to upgrade, but I would be very unhappy if I spent the money and the next revision was relased shortly thereafter and it was a major improvement.

Are you looking at the 30D and what its replacement might be or something even higher. Looking at Canon the big replacement/improvement was the 30D over the 20D, but even then many people said the 30D wasn't much more with the big exception being spot metering. What more would we be expecting of an "improvement" that would be real major. Megapixels are more than high enough already. Unless there is a huge major improvement in high ISO performance I don't see something that would make anyone wish they didn't get a 30D and instead waited for the 40D (or what ever they'll call it).

Is there a huge major difference betwen the XT and XTi?

If there is something that neither of these bodies offer that you'll think might be in the next version that you'll also think that you'll really really want, then wait. Otherwise, I don't think getting a 30D now will make you wish you waited. Plus the new upgrade will probably be more expensive, unless they do something like Nikon did with the D40/D40x, then of course you've got nothing to worry about.

Also, I am continually drawn to the 5D because I love the FF sensor, but again it is getting to be older by our current standards, so I would be interested in what they do with it. My biggest problem with the existing 5D is the speed, I have been taking a lot of sports pictures, and speed is an issue to me.

I would love a MarkIII like ktulu, but I realize that it doesn't make sense for me in the cost/benifit analysis.

my thinking as well since i still want a good wide angle to replace my kit lens i'll be nice enough to give to hubby( ) i might be able to get both for close to the price of just the 30d now( thinking the tokina 12- 24 maybe unless i sell my 28-135 if it still is purplish , then i'll get 24-70 sigma maybe)
although i think the 30d has spot metering..i'm not really looking for one specific thing, just the best camera i can get for my $$ since unless hubby wants my 30d, don't think i'll be moving up again anytime soon

I just woke up under my desk after I told my wife what I was doing. No mark III, just quite a few angry instant messages, emails and voicemails from my wife asking where I was and a note from the cleaning lady saying she could not vaccum under my desk because I was laying there. handicap did make me think though, what would the 30d+ have except maybe more mps? maybe a little faster...just don't know that if it was some kind of startling technology they would have released their flagship camera without it a few months ago so i have a question i hope someone can answer...how many mp would the current 30d sensor be able to handle without a degradation of quality?...i think someone posted some formula a while back. is the sensor in the 30d the same as the sensor in the rebel xti? or the rebelxt?

yes but no telling what they took from that flagship camera and sent downward.

i was looking at the mark 111 manual online and it does have a new processor( digi 111) that i don't think any of the others use so that could be a maybe might be in the new 30d+ if and when it might ever maybe come out. also a new focus system but don't know if they would put that there or not since it's 30 or 40 or some giant number of points. and probably the sensor cleaning...although i wonder if they'd bring out a 5d+ instead...well once i have the money in my hot little hand if they haven't announced it yet then i'll panic and make a decision
