If we're locals, can we go camping for a weekend on short notice?

Joe is starting to apply for jobs in the Orlando area! :cool1:

So of course I'm dreaming about all the fun we'll have being closer to the Mouse! We love Ft. Wilderness, and would most likely invest in a small travel trailer or pop up camper once we're down there, for staying at Ft. W.

Here's my question -- is Ft. Wilderness so busy these days, that it's hard to get a camping site with just a few days or weeks notice? Is it selling out all the time?

We'd be camping year round.

A lot of us having been trying to get Dec 08 and no luck and Dec 07 is out too. You might be able during slack times be able to get a couple of days but it is getting harder and harder. You would be best to plan way ahead.

You'll own the place in the off season. When we've gone in February we've had the place to ourselves during the week and then the loops fill up with locals on the weekend. Lots of pop-ups and families who come in for the weekend from all over Florida (oh, when I say local, I mean from Florida ;) ).

When I stopped reading RADP you had just announced your wedding plans, did you guys have the fireworks you were hoping for? I hope all is going well with you (must be, I remember you long ago talking about getting a job in the Orlando area and moving there).

Hi! Do we know eachother, or were you just a lurker?

I quit reading RADP, too, I just couldn't take some of the nasty people and weird spam etc. any more. Not to mention there's not much Disney vacation planning information available there anymore, anyways!

Joe and I ended up getting married in Hawaii, on the beach, just the two of us. The whole 10 day trip and ceremony cost half what the wedding itself that we were planning would have... mainly his mom was acting up so bad we decided to save our sanity and get married on the other side of the world from her. :rotfl:

Back on topic, I'm sorry to hear the weekends are all jammed up with locals, I guess we'll just be adding to the hordes if this works out for us!

We've definitely got it as a goal to live in the Orlando area. It'll happen some day, just not sure if that some day is in a couple of months or a decade... but it'll happen!

Hi Amanda!!

Good to see you again. Remember our tent trip at the Fort in 01??

Yep, the weekends fill up. One secret is to try looking for 7 days including the weekend starting on about a Wednesday. Get that, then drop the extra days. Trying to get Friday/Saturday only is hard.

And it used to be entertainment all in itself, an extension of WDW. The first time I visited allears.com I clicked on 'Disney Soaps' thinking I was going to get an update on Iago or Zazu, or Paul T.

That sounds beautiful! All weddings should be planned with saving your sanity in mind.

I didn't mean it was a bad thing, just that our loop would go from ghost town to full of friendlies. There most likely was more space in other loops since we were in the partial hook-up area.

Hi Carol,

Of course I remember our trip!! :goodvibes It was really one of my favorite Disney vacations of all time. I did so many things for the first time that one, like visited Animal Kingdom, rode a water mouse, ate at California Grill, went on Keys to the Kingdom... and camped at Ft. W!

Your trailer is CUTE, by the way.

Are you still doing a lot of solo camping, or has your family been coming along with you?

Thanks for the booking tip... I guess they reserve blocks of rooms for reservations of several nights or more? Sounds like they need to build some more loops.

If you have a last minute urge, you can always try calling when the last minute cancellation comes about 5 days before. We were not able to get Oct. ressies, but are going to try the Monday before the two weekends DH is off work to squeeze in. Wish us luck!

As others have said, it all depends on when you want to go. If you're trying to do a last minute trip on July 4th weekend, you're pretty much out of luck. However, during the slow times, you probably won't have any problem at all.

Still a lot of solo, but Rick will now come out with me now that we have a camper with air conditioning!!! We just got back yesterday from a weekend in the camper at a local state park.

The boys are 20 & 21, so they rarely go "anywhere" with us, just use our showers, washer/dryer, and refrigerator.

I'm taking it down to Ft. Wilderness for two weeks starting Friday, will arrive on Saturday!!!
