If wait list doesn't come through...options to add/chg res during stay?

We have a 1br booked at SSR for 10/15-22. It was just me, husband and college aged son. Now he's got a friend joining us and we'd like to get a larger room. We're wait listed for a 2br or an additional studio at SSR in hopes something will open up but availability that week looks dismal. I'm checking the RAT and availability daily.

My question is can you continue to check availability during your stay and change or add to your existing reservation if something becomes available? If so, how did you make the reservations? What was the process?

Even if I can get half the week in a larger or additional room (at the same resort), it would help. 4 adults with one bathroom is doable but not ideal. How I wish all 1br DVC rooms had at least another 1/2 bath and that great chair that converts into a twin bed!

Anytime you find availability all you have to do is call MS or go to the front desk the MS is closed and book the room.
A couple of examples of when I have done this:
DW and I several times have been at DTD for the day and decided we wanted to stay the night. Called the resorts directly (back before MS was open on Sundays) or MS and checked in within 15 minutes.
At MK for the day in Feb ’14 for our anniversary, called MS @09:00, and booked a room at BLT for that night. Checked-in @11:00 and the room was ready. We did not plan on this day going like this until @05:00 while still in bed.

All points are subtracted from your account on check in day. Not sure you can switch once you check in.

Good point. If that's the case, I'll keep looking for an additional studio if the waitlist doesn't come through.

Call MS in the week leading up to your check in and the morning if the day you are checking in and also check with the front desk when you check in to see if they have a 2 BR for you instead of the 1br. I've changed resorts while driving to check in. If there's a possibility MS will call the resort to see if the room you want is available. Now and then people have reported points getting mixed up if it's the front desk who makes the switch but MS should be able to straighten it out. I had no issues when MS switched my room themselves.

I would also ask at the front desk of SSR to see if there is a 2 bedroom available when you check in. If they do have an open villa, they can go into your DVC account and take the extra points.

If the front desk does get you a 2 BR, double check your points. Just in case they don't do what you expected.

Had no idea! I always cut our WL requests off @ 30 day mark and 'resign' myself to staying @ whatever resort I have booked.

Thought if something did come up that was more appealing, I'd lose the points in changing from the original reservation and have to use "new points".

So confused

If the new room was less points then you might lose them if you're doing it on the day od check in. Or at a minimum you'd have a few in holding. But any changes at less than 30 days they just cancel the other reservation which puts the points in holding and then use those same holding points.

Thank you so much for explaining it. I cannot believe I didn't understand that by this point:o
