can't they turn smoking/non-smoking into categories?

If DVC can reserve a specific type of BW view at BWV now and they can tell you if you are getting 2beds or 1bed and a couch at BCV then why can't they do this with smoking and non-smoking?

I'm not asking this question to start a debate on smoking and non-smoking.

Would this be more difficult to do than the other two booking categories mentioned above? If so, what makes it more difficult?

Would one group have a harder time booking rooms and therefore be unhappy with this new system? Example, are there less or more of one type of room than there are smoking or non-smoking DVCer's that may want to book that room at a certain time?

Do you think DVC will make smoking and non-smoking an actual category?

I think that every category added creates additional problems for how they book. The wait list for one could be a nightmare. Not only would they have to clear type of room, resort and dates but they would also have to add smoking/non-smoking. Theoretically, they can no clean rooms for non-smokers that had been used for smoking (although this doesn't really do the trick for me).

My guess is they will move to non-smoking resorts before they put in the category.

When I emailed MS about the non-smoking room and why wasn't it guaranteed, I received a call back. One of the things I was told is that around 95% of the rooms are non-smoking so the chances of not getting the request is very small. That's why it's not a room category.

I know that some have said they received a smoking room or NS room sometimes but it doesn't seem to be common?

We were given a smoking room when we requested non-smoking once....and were told we couldn't get a smoking room at our next stay, but were given one.

I think they might have a certain number of rooms that aren't really designated....which would mean to make them a category of room they'd have to declare them one or the other. Then again, I tend to assume any room that doesn't have a no smoking sign on the door is a smoking optional room.

If they would make the resorts completely non-smoking, I would guess that there will be a lot more smoking on the balconies! Or a lot more non-smoking rooms that would be smoked in.

don't tell Gail Hayden

I thought of Gail as I posted. I didn't want to hurt her feelings or argue either way....just stating a general feel for the way society is heading.

Pam, you did not hurt my feelings, but, I do doubt it will happen, I think 90-95 non smoking should be enough for non smokers to stop their complaining, don't you?

I wasn't aware that 90-95% of the rooms were non-smoking.

I actually think it would benifit everyone, smokers and non-smokers alike, if they could offer this as a category.

As I stated before, I'm not looking to start a debate or anything. I didn't intend for my post to sound like I was complaining about smokers. I wanted to see if any other members were for or against this-smokers and non-smokers alike.

It just seems like a good idea to be able to inform both groups ahead of time if there particular room was available. If all 95% of the non-smoking rooms were filled at my 1st resort choice then I would have the option to pick elsewhere.

Okay! I hate to start this up again but if 90 - 95% are non-smoking then what percentage is smoking and smoking optional? It appears there are more of these than any of us may have realized!! Annmarie

I think the categories are Non-Smoking and Smoking Optional. There is no room where you are forced to smoke. ;) So, 5-10% are what we call smoking rooms and Disney calls "smoking optional".

If Disney can accurately judge the demand for these rooms, I'm okay with keeping them available.

I wasn't sure the BW view was a done deal....I see now that it is. Maybe they could start booking by actual smoking type. I think they almost do that already.

Smoking optional and smoking are the same. In other words, a non smoking room means you cannot smoke. Smoking or smoking optional means you can be there and not smoke if you don't want to or smoke if you want to. Smoking optional is the PC way to say smoking rooms.

Pam,
If more people would make their smoking preferance for rooms at the time of the reservation, then it would be easier for everyone, but, some people (no one here) think that MS has a crystal ball and just knows. I think what they have done at BW is wonderful and let's hope they can do the same for this request. It sure would make life a lot easier, but, then, we would have one less thing to discuss. :)
