If a marriage ends within the first year, should the couple return the wedding gifts?

Great story, Ziggy!

We never expected to get back the shower and wedding gifts we gave for her first wedding, and we never felt obliged to give her anything for the second.

I agree with this post. Rarely do I give a wedding gift a second time.

I would never even think of a gift being returned to me! how sad.

Okay, to me it seems like an odd question, but I have a friend who was married last spring and is now getting divorced. It's been 9 months. They had a medium to large wedding (first marriage for both of them) and many of the gifts they received haven't even been opened yet. I was talking to my friend today and she tells me she's been asked over and over if she will be returning people's wedding gifts because the marriage was so short. :confused3

Is this common?

Wow, a gift is a gift......

Don't know what type of friends and family your friend has... but..

IMHO, if I did know somebody who asked for a gift back... I would MORE than happy to give it to them.... Wouldn't have any other respect for the person.... But, I also wouldn't want to have possession of what they considered should be 'theirs'.

Am I reading this wrong - or is this thread from last January?

Add me to those who think that expecting a gift back is rude, and soo tacky :sad2: It is also mean, and I can't imagine having this thoughts about someone I loved. Those who gave the gift out of obligation and care more about the gift than about the couple should have just declined the invitation and not give anything.

And what about the money spent on you on the wedding, the appetizers, dinner, drinks and cake? Would ask to redouce the amount of money they spent on you from the value on the gift? Just ridiculous

I wouldn't want a wedding gift back if someone I gave it to got divorced within a year. They have enough problems without worrying about that.

If they didn't end up getting married, the gifts should be returned. But since they did get married, the gifts are theirs.

I saw this thread was old but since I wasn't a member back then, I thought I'd jump in and add my 2 cents. lol

I can't imagine anyone these days caring about etiquette but they should.

Crazy how thigs are so disposable.
