Any ideas out there for a short 5 day vacation from home in central NY?

Because of health problems I prefer to remain within 400 miles of home. And the same pesky problem leaves me with limited energy, so I don't want anything too fast paced.

My INS papers are still being processed, so border crossing is out.

Given those limitations, does anyone have any ideas?

I like anything historical. I do not like the beach.

thanks.

I realize its not for everyone but whenever I have a spear moment I can be found frolicking in the woods :teeth:
I mean camping;)
Not hiking to get to the destination camping but pack everything in the truck and head for the river type of camping!

I was kindi of thinking Washington, DC for you, but that might be more than 400 miles. I'm not sure. It's fillled with tons of great museums, and historical things.

I don't know why, but I thought that you were Canadian.

I also love Colonial Williamsburg, in VA, but thats even further south. (ugh):D

I don't know if it is within 400 miles of where you are located, but Newport, Rhode Island is a lot of fun if you've never been there. Mansions to tour and such.

Hi faithinkarma. DH and I are going to Alexandria Bay next weekend for my birthday. :Pinkbounc

Here is the resort we are staying: http://www.riveredge.com They have all-inclusive packages on many weekends.

You could also do search for resorts in the Adirondacks, Catskills, Poconos or Lake George area.

If money isn't an issue, there's NYC or Boston. ;)

And if you want something close, there is always the Finger Lakes. If you have five days, you could probably hit all the wineries on all the lakes.

Boston is GREAT for historical things. Lots of great tours to go on and dead people to see (well, their headstones) in the cemetaries.

Oh, and mainewmn, did you mean to say when you have a SPEAR moment you like to go frolicking in the woods? :) I'm not making fun, but was wondering if that was to go with the woods - spearing things & stuff?

I am, but I married an American and am in some kind of limbo where I am neither until it is all settled.

If not for that I would have loved to go to Niagara on the Lake for a few days.

Thanks for all the great ideas folks. Keep them coming.

I should have mentioned that my kids are grown and gone, and money is not really an issue.

Gosh I have such a hard time saying that. The 60s child that I was still has issues with being "comfortable".

...money is not really an issue.

Then definately go to Newport! The Inn at Castle Hill
was recently redone and the place is to die for. Yes, there's a beach, but you don't have to go if you don't want to ;). As someone already mentioned, the mansions are great to go to and listening to the stories taking the tours are wonderful. You can take a ferry to Providence or to Block Island. Or just walk around town. Lots to do.

Check out the Newport website at GoNewport

Yes - I am a big fan. We go out 3 sometimes 4 times a year....where I'm saving to retire to.

edited to fix a link

The Travel channel had Niagra Falls. I heard Niagra Canada is a tour trap town, don't know, but the Travel Channel showed everything you could do at Niagra Falls, and it caught my interest I want to go. I figured 18 hour drive there 2 days and back home.

Oh my God, I was just about to recommend Newport and the Inn at Castle Hill also. always like to get away for a weekend in Newport - five days may be too long, though. But you could make it a Boston and Newport trip. I also like to get away to Montreal, but given you papers issue thats not really an option.

After I posted I thought of the perfect thing I would want to do - I just found that the Queen Elizabeth 2 is leaving out of New York City for a cruise to nowhere for four days in May. That would be a great vacation and easy to get on and off for you.

No, she said she can't cross the US/Canada border until she gets her VISA.

You can do Amish Country, visit Hershey (stay at the FABULOUS Hershey Hotel and get a spa package!). Then take a drive and transfer to Philly and see the sites there. You can use priceline for Philly and stay at a great 4 star for under $100. Check out what others like as far as restaurants @ chowhound.com Lots of great food in Philadelphia!!!

Tell us what you decide.....

Saratoga Springs is a great area to visit (I live about 25 minutes from there). There are day spas and mineral baths, really nice B&B's, antique stores, museums, beautiful downtown, great restaurants... In august the flat track is open. Even if you aren't into gambling it's a fun day and a great way to people watch. People wear everything from shorts and tank tops to summer dresses and picture hats. For history, there's the Saratoga battlefield and several forts on nearby Lake George. During the summer Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) hosts the New York City Ballet for three weeks and the Philadelphia Orchestra for the next three weeks. My Dh and I were married in Congress Park in the "Spit and Spat" fountain gardens, so Saratoga has a lot of sentimental value to me. During the summer we always go to Saratoga on date night. Wherever you end up going I hope you have a great vacation.
