ideas for baby shower gift?

Squishypig is RIGHT ON!

I love to give books that were my son's favorites...if you have time, I order from BN.com so that I get a clean fresh new version (sometimes in the store they've already been chewed on or licked).

I love the Sandra Boynton board books...specifically The Going To Bed Book. I know that with my DS, I was reading to him even at a few weeks old. I would lie him on the floor on a blankey on his back and lie down next to him with my feet up on the couch and hold the book over his head and read "Apple, Banana, etc). I wasn't really trying to "teach" him, but it was something fun for us to do together. It was winter and I didn't want to take him out. He loved his books then, and he's one of the top readers in his class now at 9.

Books are a gift that last. You can get board books or those plastic fluffy books that the kids eat more than read!

Enjoy!

I am doing the diaper cake for my bf baby shower. Her theme is Winnie the Pooh, so I am going with that theme and adding a ton of little stuff like clippers, brushes, rattles, binkies, lotions and stuff. I also hide little things in them like gift cards and other things for mommy.. I am also making a mommy basket with slippers, a nightgown ( a dark color), a book, some snacks and a cd for her to bring to the hospital

Doesn't every baby need Goodnight Moon in their library too?

I just went to a shower for my DD's BFF. My daughter had a baby last year and she said that she got a lot of things but still had to go out and buy all the little things. For the shower I went with an unusual assortment of things, mostly bath items, burp cloths, and bibs. My DD bought her a pack of cloth diapers to include in her gift. They are the perfect thing to have on hand for spitting up, messes, burp cloths, etc and they make great dust rags and window cleaning rags after you are done with them. Both my girls said to go with items in a bigger size than newborn and they both love the one piece outfits for sleep, laying around the house etc. DGS is 11 months old and he still wore them until last month when he started walking

Disney Boards I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Baby Einstein DVD's

These were HUGE when my kids were little. All I had to do was pop one in for 5 minutes and it would distract them away from that 'not sure why I'm crying but I have been for a 1/2 hour straight' type moments. And my kids watched them consistently for several years (obviously they were a lot older before they actually 'watched' a full video). I like the educational aspects but I more like it for a 'when you've tried everything else' out for a new parent who might be on their last, sleepless leg and not sure what else to do!!

I always do a set of these plus one or two of the Baby Einstein books too!

A spin off of the essentials basket that I like to do is a selection of first aid items

Infant tylenol
Pedialyte
Mylicon/gripe water
vapo rub
gauze/bandages
nose sucker
fever pads
thermometer
. . .you get the drift

I always write on it "all the things I hope you never need"

Now that I CVS it can be almost economical to get!

I usually give essentials as well, but the best gift I got was a Loganberger basket, actually I think it was called a purse anyhow a lidded basket as box with a lid would work as well. It came with a sharpie for my Dr. and all the nurses sign it with the sharpie and I asked for extra footprint ink and put her little tootsies right on the top. It makes a wonderful keepsake.

New mom here.

DON'T buy a bunch of onesies. I have a ton of them, but hardly use them. Yes it's summer, but we have the ac going so I put her in long sleeved footed sleepers most of the time so she's not cold.

I say books, diapers (I was SO surprised by how many we go thru!), and an offer to bring over dinner once they're home from the hospital. One of the wives of DH's coworkers brought over a roast with veggies, a pasta salad, a steam bag of peas that I could throw in the microwave, and homemade muffins for dinner for us one night. Lasted us two or three meals and was AWESOME!!

Sleepers in bigger sizes are great too, we needed to put her in bigger things so they didn't rub on her umbilical cord until it healed.

I always try to do a meal for the mom after delivery. When my kids were born, especially the first one, it was wonderful to have a yummy dinner prepared for me.

For a shower gift, my favorite is books. You can never have too many and often, because I have kids, I can bring books that are different and sure-fire kid favorites.

Purchase a nice picture frame and put a gift certificate inside of it for a photo place such as Sears, JC Penny, Target etc. for the new parents to get the baby's picture taken.
