Squishypig is RIGHT ON!
I love to give books that were my son's favorites...if you have time, I order from BN.com so that I get a clean fresh new version (sometimes in the store they've already been chewed on or licked).
I love the Sandra Boynton board books...specifically The Going To Bed Book. I know that with my DS, I was reading to him even at a few weeks old. I would lie him on the floor on a blankey on his back and lie down next to him with my feet up on the couch and hold the book over his head and read "Apple, Banana, etc). I wasn't really trying to "teach" him, but it was something fun for us to do together. It was winter and I didn't want to take him out. He loved his books then, and he's one of the top readers in his class now at 9.
Books are a gift that last. You can get board books or those plastic fluffy books that the kids eat more than read!
Enjoy!
