My ice maker in my fridge just died. Has anyone had this happen? Any suggestions on getting it fixed? Will I have to have a repair man come out? Uughhh...

It will probably need replacement, and depending on model refrigerator, will be somewhere between $100 and $200 for both parts and labor.

I would suggest calling a couple of repair places, especially those that indicate they do warranty repairs for the brand. Give them the brand and model and they should quote you a fairly firm price over the phone. It will probably cost less to get the ice make replaced than repaired.

Our ice maker froze up one time. I had to remove it from the freezer and let it sit on the counter overnight. Dry any left over condensation/water off and then re-installed it. It was a fairly new fridge, so I couldn't see it breaking that soon. About a week later one of the kids fessed up to leaving the freezer door open for a few hours. I think the ice melted enough to freeze all the parts when the door was closed again. We have a whirlpool gold and the ice maker was pretty easy to take out to look at. HTH

My ice maker quit working last summer. I didn't have time to try to fix it, so I just resorted to buying bags of ice every other day on the way home, and dumping the ice into the thing in the freezer (so we could still use the door dispenser.

I did this for about two months before I had a chance to pull the thing apart. One night, I was sitting at the kitchen table and heard ice drop. Somehow, it fixed itself! I don't know why it stopped working, and I don't know how it started working again. Sometimes procrastination works.

When my icemaker breaks, I just go to the dollar store and get another...

We called to have ours fixed when ours broke. Never had a problem after that.

Ours froze up once before too. DH used a hair dryer to warm up the line, and now it's back to normal. (Our fridge isn't that old - new in 2005)

Dh put ours in our old refrigerator $35.00 (he is not the most handy) and said it was easy. He also fixed it once, just needed a new little plastic hose, it got bent.

It depends on what kind of fridge you have, and therefore what style of icemaker how easy the home repair could be. I have a side-by-side fridge, and have had my ice maker quit a few times with varying solutions (it's from 2001, and still in great shape, so definitely worth fixing)... (these are all for side-by-side fridges and may not apply to stacked)...

1) A chunk of ice is jamming the mechanism. It takes a surprisingly small piece of ice to do this... if mine stops, this is the first thing I check - stick my hand right in the grates that make the cubes and fish around - this is the problem most of the time

2) The line froze-up somewhere... this is a bigger pain. Root around and find the line leading to the mechanism.... if there is any bit of frost on it, that could be the issue... the solution is start with a hot wet washcloth to the line, if that doesn't work then defrost your fridge (old skool, I know)

3) A part actually failed... Ice makers aren't complex creatures, and many of the pieces are little plastic bits, or little switches that maintain the temperature. If you are handy, you can probably research online and figure out the part. I consider myself to be darn handy, but I've called out this repair. For me, the temp sensor failed - $150 ish (the guy was there literally 7 minutes. GAH)

4) It's something bigger and more insidious. I *just* had this happen right after New Year's. My ice maker stopped working... I was super busy and #1 wasn't the issue... I hadn't had the time or desire to do #2 yet, and when I came home one day, about a week later, the whole fridge was kaput. Fortunately for me, I have a fridge in the basement (oh, the luxury!) AND a home warranty... so I called the warranty people, and a Sear's guy came out and fixed it (again, some small part, but without the warranty it would have been $225).

It's usually something quite simple - and if you have the right book/manual/online site, you can probably figure out the repair yourself. In my experience, it's $100 just to get a guy to your house, plus labor and parts, so probably a minimum of $150 for any professional repair.

If you have Angie's List, you can check there - I've found some great folks thru them...

GOOD LUCK!!!

Fridge or Freezer Won't Cool
There are lots of malfunctions that can take the chill out of your fridge. One common cause of suddenly soft ice cream or warm juice is a simple loss of electricity.
*First, Check the Thermostat: The temperature control dial inside the fridge is sometimes irresistible to curious kids.
*Second, Clean the Coils: n order for your fridge to create a chill, air has to flow freely through the condenser coils. On most older refrigerators, these coils are on the backside.
*Third, Free Up the Condenser Fan: Coils on the back of a fridge create their own airflow as they heat up.

Hope you will like it this little information with you guys... I get this some information in some site that i found in google search engine... Have a nice day to all of you guys...
