OH my goodness I am a response on national internet search of cream trucks and missing children ...oh my goodness.. I thought it was bigger than just silly me.. after all it was in the news

The ice cream truck was such an important part of my childhood ~ like legit "food" truck style - Mr. Softee. Not the panel trucks with prewrapped popsicles, the ones associated with .....

LOL. They haven't started after Labor Day here in 25 years. Love to see a breakdown of how many schools start before and after Labor Day. Sweetwater School District in San Diego started July 24th. Schools take a LOT of whole weeks off here in the school year. That district has a TWO WEEK fall break the last week of September and the first week of October. They take the full Thanksgiving week off, not just Thursday and Friday. Two weeks for Christmas. Two weeks for Spring Break. Wait it was an American Horror storyline? I've only watched one season (circus ... clown) and loved it but tried a couple others and couldn't get in to it. Might have to search this out.

Inside edition did a story today about a cinema movie about missing children and somehow it became a national story and if the concept was true... especially linked to ice cream trucks... I under estimate the viewership here because I see the show mid afternoon.. search Virginia and trucks

There's a opinion in educational circles (that I happen to agree with) that a schedule with frequent breaks like that and a shorter summer vacation is actually better for learning outcomes. The case for it is that it helps prevent burn-out, reduces "summer slide" (while still having a decent separation between grade years as compared to "year-round" schooling") and also allows families more flexible options for travel without pulling kids out of instructional time.

But some people don't like it, and they cite as drawbacks too many transitions and more complicated childcare arrangements. It hasn't been tried a lot where I am (that I know of) - I think because we have too much of a summer economy (think Cape Cod) and because folks here put a lot of stock in tradition. But it's definitely becoming popular in some areas.

One of the big arguments here for starting earlier was to have first semester end before Christmas break, and avoid Christmas break slide before finals when they were in the middle of January.
