Does anyone know if all the rooms have iceboxes or if they need to be requested? Is there a charge? My friend recently cruised and the one in her room was not working. She had medication that needed refrigeration and was told the iceboxes were for drinks only. Does anyone know?

Maureen - They have them in every room and there's no charge. Last year, ours wasn't working very well either. It was cool but not cold. We bought some cold sodas in St. Maarten and it KEPT them cold, but no way would it have made room temp. sodas GET cold...

I can't imagine them saying that they were only for sodas!! What's a person supposed to do with their meds??

The coolers are very small also - enough room for maybe 12 sodas (cans) and a bottle of wine, but little more.

See you in Oct.! :)

The cabins have 'coolers', which is a distinction from an 'icebox'. They are good for keeping beverages cool, if you give them a few hours to get going. I have kept other things in there, like fruit and yogurt, water, candy bars, and maybe something left over from a room service order.

I was under the impression that DCL would provide a genuine refrigerator to keep medicine in, but I could be confusing the policy with one that the resorts at WDW have.

At any rate, I would start by filling in the 'Medical needs' form that DCL will provide you or your TA, and getting it back to them.

hope that helps

You can "help" the cooler by placing ziploc bags (that you bring from home) filled with ice cubes (that your cabin steward will provide daily) in it. The "enhanced" cooler should be sufficiently cold for your friend's medications. ;) ;) ;)

I wouldn't count on them keeping things cooled. Most posters on this board have indicated that the fridges/iceboxes aren't much to write home about, and don't work that well.

If you need a real fridge for medical reasons (I.E. Meds) then you need to talk to your Travel Agent or DCL directly (if you booked directly) to request a medical form. Your doctor will need to complete the form stating the issue and any assistance you might need like a fridge. They will then provide you with a real fridge.

Good Luck!

I personally have been on 3 cruises, 1 magic, 2 wonder, all in different parts of the ship and have brought hot soda onboard and had cool soda in a short period of time. And I drink beverages without ice. Just because it's not blowing cold air on you when you open it, does not mean it can't cool beverages down.

However, for items that have to be kept really cold (45° F or lower), such as meds, yes, definitely follow the above directions and get a real refrigerator.

When we cruised on the Magic last November, I stored my insulin in the "icebox" (haven't heard that term in years - lol) and it was kept sufficiently cold. :p

From what I understand, if you have a medical necessity for a refridgerator one will be provided but it will be put on the desk and it takes up alot of valuable space. If the meds needed to be kept cold is insulin the regular coolbox should do fine. (you do know that insulin in vials can be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight for up to 1 month. (makes for a less painful injection))

True, except some of the newer insulins (Lantus, in particular) must be kept refrigerated. I've been waffling about asking for a real fridge or not. Really need to keep my Lantus cold but don't want to waste space. My other (bigger) concern is that slight warming is not nearly as dangerous as freezing, and many times I've had those small dorm refrigerators freeze up. Its a hassle when your soda freezes at a hotel but its a disaster when your insulin freezes in the middle of the ocean!

May have to resort to the bag of ice inside the ice box.
