Well we didn't miss much heat, we were in Central OR, in Bend, where my parents live, so it was high 80s-mid 90s there! Then of course it just got much much hotter in CA!!! Only one day in the 70s in OR!!! That is okay, though -- I love dry heat!!!

Yay you are back, can I add, it's about time? We've missed you around here!

I am enjoying reading all my subscriptions, though!!!! WigD's just nearly killed me :lmao: JUST KIDDING !!!!!:goodvibes

So before I officially end this TR and move on to my new :santa:December trip PTR:santa:, I wanted to post some final details about budgets, about the DDP, and what worked for us, etc. That way I can really see what I learned from the previous trip, and what I know I will be excited to repeat on the next!

So first, the BUDGET.:scared:

Mind you, I just rounded up or down to keep it at whole dollars, and to keep it simple...

Initially, we had booked a package for the Wilderness Lodge, Courtyard View on the 4/3 special. So with hopper tickets and the DDP for four (two adults/two children) the total was: $3320.00.

As you know – a month before we were scheduled to go, my husband had found a DVC reservation to rent, for a 2 bedroom villa at OKW. Initially the reservation wasn’t cost effective, not really “more” because it was a bigger place, afterall, but for the opportunity cost, changing the resort location, starting from scratch for ADRs, it didn’t seem worth it to us… Then, as the date got closer, the price for the reservation was lowered, and at that point we couldn’t say “no”. To placate me a little, losing out on WL and my ADRs was a crush for me, DH suggested we get APs (since we were already going in December) and that we would also schedule a third trip the following summer 2010, to get the most use from the passes. SO, I said “yes”. LIKE I would have answered otherwise …:rolleyes1

For our June 28 - July 5 trip we spent the following:

$1100.00 for the 7 night stay in the 2bedroom villa at OKW
$715.00 for the Basic Dining Plan (for two adults, two children)
$1650.00 for the AP’s (this with the 10% discount coupon from a current AP holder)

SO the total was $3465.00 of which we used $371.00 Disney rewards to pay for a portion.

The total wasn't that much more, given that we were able to get APs and of course the fact that we had a two bedroom villa vs. a single resort room for a fraction of what that would have been.

OOP, we spent an additional $660.00.
This was tax/tip, additional food/meals, alcohol, our TIW card ($75.00), and souveniers. – Tips, Tax, Food items, 3hrs at the Neverland Kids Club, and alcohol was $440.00 of that total… So $220.00 total on souvenirs, which included 2 Refillable mugs, two Tshirts, Disney Racers, the blasted plastic swords, two kid ponchos, a stuffie (Piglet – to complete our collection!) an Epcot Passport (to have for Christmas), a few bracelets for a couple little girls we know, my beloved red resort bag!!!! :goodvibes, some new pins, a new lanyard (can’t sport a 2008 lanyard in 2009!) and locking pin backs.

So, together, with the resort stay expenses we spent close to $4,120.00.

If we were to have stayed on our original package, we would have a total around $3980.00.

A difference? NOT much.

Some splurges, but for the money, we feel we got a lot – especially since the villa cost alone would have surely set us back almost as much as the total!

And of course, for December, the DDP will be the same, and the Resort, a 1 bedroom villa at Beach Club for $1000.00. Our resort and DDP will be approximately $1800.00 for a 7 night stay Christmas week. Given that there are no discounts for four of the nights we are staying, we feel this is a huge bargin. If we spend the same on “extras” we will have spent about $2500.00 (having already purchased our tickets) – again, Christmas week? That is a true deal. :yay:

For our June 2010 trip, we will have saved money, with an AP resort discount (I hope!!) and the tickets. Here the savings will truly make a difference. I estimate us staying at a deluxe and getting an AP rate or better. With dining again we will have already saved the $750 on tickets that third and final trip…. OR is it?! :rolleyes1

I do have fantasies about a solo trip in March for the Disney Princess ½ Marathon… I have the green light to do this from DH. I have to make sure I am really willing to go the whole mile (s)… literally. So we’ll see… :cloud9:

Next POST … How did the dining plan work out for us?

Sounds like you did really good money wise but all those little extras at the parks plus tips do add up. When I came home I had a whole stack of receipts.

I am going to try to go in December for a few days because it was so hot that it does take some of your energy. We will see.

What a deal you got on your Christmas stay! I wish that my kids were still able to get the kids price on tickets. We are now all adults!

Beloved resort bag- do show! I don't remember and always love to see bags!

This was our second trip with the Disney Dining plan. We purchased the "Basic" plan again. The Quick Service plan wasn't going to cut it with my DH, and the Deluxe, a bit pricey, so we went with what we had last Nov, because we liked it. Because we just purchased APs, we decided to get the TIW card as well. This entitled us to 20% off food and drinks (including alcohol). We used it to supplement our DDP credits, for drinks, a few appetizers, and two OOP meals. It does require you to "tip" 18% so basically the savings is your tip. We also purchased refillable mugs for DH and I.

From home I brought:
Bottled water (a case)
A bottle of wine
Coffee
Half and half
Horizon Chocolate milk boxes
English muffins
Juice boxes
A MEGA box of Cheerios
Granola bars
Single serving bags of Pirate Booty (kinda like white cheddar popcorn)
Annie’s cheese bunnies
Apples
Baby carrots
Strawberries

Mostly snacks that I could throw in the park bag. Because we took the train, we had our whole car, so we were able to bring a cooler. These were helpful because I didn't use snack credits for beverages, since I could throw these items in the bag for the kids quite easily.

So our Dining costs and choices are as follows ...

Table Service Meals:
Sanaa = 70.00
California Grille = 59.00 (DH did OOP, and I did DDP -- see note below)
Tokyo Dining = 96.00
Whispering Canyon Café = 105.00
The Wave = 90.00
Crystal Palace = 76.00
Le Cellier = 106.00

(we also ate lunch at Chef's and at 50's Prime Time but these were OOP)

Quick Service Meals:
Anandapur Café = 44.00
Casey’s = 13.00
Wolfgang Puck Express = 63.00
Cantina de Angel = 40.00
Wolfgang Puck Express = 55.00
The Contempo Cafe = 47.00
The Contempo Cafe = 33.00
Wolfgang Puck Express = 61.00
Good’s to Go at OKW = 13.00

Our Snack choices were an average of $3.29 - $3.99:
Frozen Dole whip floats
Ice Cream Sandwiches
Frozen Orange Slushies
Goofy’s pretzels and oreos
Soft serve Ice Cream
Popcorn
Cappuccinos
Muffins/Cookies
Frozen cokes
Crepes

When I total all of our receipts, it looks like our restaurant bills from the DDP were about: $1060.00 The cost of the plan $715.00. A difference of $345.00.

Basically we easily saved 40% on the DDP given the difference between the cost of the plan and the restaurant totals. However, since we used the TIW card for a few things, two extra TS meals, appetizers, and drinks; we “spent” some of that savings through OOP dining and of course tips!!

While I estimated $3.20 for our “average” snack price, I know we were often selecting options over that, and we did pay OOP for the random popsicle or plain pretzel. Most TS meals we had at least one cocktail or glass of wine – we splurged for our Cali Grille “date night” meal.

Our most expensive TS meal (for all four of us) = WCC and Le Cellier (practically tied)
Our least expensive TS meal (for all four of us) = Sanaa

If you are on the basic plan, I am not sure if the Signature dining establishments are really worth the two credits. I mean I will continue to select the Signature restaurants, don’t get me wrong, but even if only ONE person used the DDP, it still isn’t much of a deal. For example, at Cali Grille DH ordered an Appetizer and Entrée OOP, and I ordered a salad OOP and my Main and Dessert were of course on the plan – on the DDP that meal – my entrée, dessert, and cappuccino were $59.31… For the two credits we could have had a meal at Le Cellier….. together! I think in December we will pay OOP for dinner at Cali Grille, if we go… I am planning on trying a different Signature restaurant next trip.

Even though we spent extra, ordering an appetizer here and there and drinks, I still think we got a good value from the plan and for the $. The question is age old, though: Would we be eating this much if we didn’t have the plan? I, like many on the DIS, just wish they would give you the option of Appetizer OR Dessert… it would be perfect then. :thumbsup2

I did find that we struggled to use our CS meals. I think this is because we had TS lunches two times on the trip. We ended up using them for QS breakfasts, which worked out very nicely – The Contempo Café is PERFECT for this! We will no doubt do that again. Snacks, we had a few left that we scurried to use our final morning, but it wasn’t a problem. I did not feel were were fitting our vacation around when we had reservations, so I think we had a great experience using the plan. :)

We will definitely be using it again in December, especially since those holiday surcharges will be back!

Coming up, the final post and musings...

"Blasted plastic swords" :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: Oh, how often I have had those exact same sentiments!

Clearly I need to learn from you -- you spend way less on all your extras than we do -- I need to figure out how to do that.

Wow...I'm so late to the party!! However I just spent the last two days reading through your TR and I loved it!!! I enjoyed every minute of your family's vacation and I'm itchin to hear all about your plans for December!!!!

I'm so glad that the Dining plan worked out for you guys! I'm a huge fan and really enjoy the not having to worry about paying for meals when I get to Disney that its all taken care of!!

Once again..thank you so much for sharing your trip with us!! I look forward to your next one!!!

Thanks for the dining plan breakdown. You really saved a big chunk of change! I believe we did too, but I never actually figured it out. Its nice to see it in black and white.:thumbsup2

Ooh, a solo trip in March! This will definitely be a Disney year, you lucky girl.:goodvibes Can't wait to hear your final musings and all of the planning for your December trip.:yay:

Oh yes, I had that same stack of receipts I am sure!!! :rotfl: I am counting on the weather being more "friendly" in December -- the crowds, NOT likely!!

What a deal you got on your Christmas stay! I wish that my kids were still able to get the kids price on tickets. We are now all adults!

Oh yeah, I dread that day!!! Adult prices??!! GASP!

RE the Christmas deal, yes it was. Hands down. WE had already committed to that before we made the change to OKW -- DH wasn't going to let it get by him, even though I was in total shock that HE wanted to go back to WDW six mos later!! He said he would /'manage" knowing he had just scored a $3,000 resort room for a grand! ...:lmao:

Beloved resort bag- do show! I don't remember and always love to see bags!
HI! I will take a photo of our purchases, I never did that! The boys got some really cute pins... the bag is nothing from Tren-D -- TRUST ME!! it is one of those dorky laminated big shopping bags, but I have one from 2005 that I LOVE, and I just had to have another!!! :rolleyes1

Oh that is TOOOO funny. Yes I know it is a common phrase... "Damn, Blasted : INSERT TOY TYPE THAT YOU HAVE EITHER STUBBED YOUR TOE ON, STEPPED ON, PICKED UP FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME...etc!" Don't we mom's know it!! :) I was just so amused that the plastic toy sword was so coveted!!! OF course DH7 didn't see the LGM package that Connor scored... and OH I am so glad he did not... tell me, Jackie, do you find LGM in the darndest places??!! :lmao: :rotfl2:

Nah, nothing to learn -- remember: We were there in NOVEMBER. I bought $60.00 of plastic lightsabers that trip, and $45.00 of gargantuan Pooh Bear. AND I couldn't find my 4 parks one world CD to BUY this trip... so if I Hadn't been there in NOV, I would have set myself back another 150.00 easily!!!

Don't let me tell you what my ornament budget is looking like.... :rolleyes1

I am so excited for your trip this October!!! :yay:
I am excited for my December trip, too! It won't be a surprise (like this last one was) so I can actually get my kids more involved from the start -- but we have not told them yet!
