First Run 10k Race Recap
First Run 10k Race Recap
I'm emotional. Just prepare for this to be the most rambling post I've ever posted. Why am I emotional? I DON'T EVEN KNOW. Let me count the ways.
1. My niece tested positive for Covid and while she's fine (she's 5 and has barely a cold) I was very sad about it and did some crying on the way to my (very small & safe) NYE gathering
2. I have to take a covid test before returning to work and while I have zero reason to believe that I will test positive I am weirdly anxious about it because I trained too hard for this marathon for ANYTHING to get in my way
3. All the stuff with flights being cancelled - it's 100% out of my control BUT STILL
4. The Harry Potter Reunion special on HBO - I cry every time I talk about it so I won't take the risk of typing about it just know that I read the first book when I was 8 and the last movie came out when I was 21 so it's been a massive part of my life and deeply influential on who I am as a person
Anyway, I ran a 10k today. Let's talk about it.
Bib Pick Up
Pick up was this morning, pre-race. The email said to get there no later than 9:45 to get everything and warm up before the race started at 11. This made me worried, so my plan as to be there for 9. I ran late and didn't get there until 9:30 or just before. Well... I didn't need to be so early. I could have arrived at 10:30 and had enough time. I walked the quarter mile or so from the parking lot to the bib pick up location, grabbed my bib and hat, and then went to my car to sit in some heat until it was time to get back and start. Weather was super rainy, btw. I had an old crappy umbrella that I used to walk back and forth and just left behind at the start since I didn't need it. Anyway, I went back to the start and met up for photos with the other girls from the club (all ran the 5k - I was the only 10k runner in our group). The rain stopped... until the race started when it started to downpour.
Oh, let's talk about the race.
The Race
The course is two loops of the 5k course with a slight change on the second loop to make sure you get to 6.2.Mile 1: 10:17
Mile 2: 9:51
Mile 3: 9:50
Loop number 1 I did with my friend Jen. She said I was setting the pace and I set it maybe a liiiiiittle faster than I should have. I knew I would PR today because I've been doing about a 1:04 6 mile run, so I was expecting roughly a 1:05 (4 minute PR). Anyway, this was a good first loop and she went off to finish. I told her that I didn't mind if she left after she finished so she could dry off (it POURED that first loop) but she wanted to try to stay to cheer for my finish.
Mile 4: 10:01
Mile 5: 10:07
Mile 6: 10:02
I joked with Jen that I was going to slow down in the second half - which I did but not by much. I did okay the first mile, but was struggling a little bit mentally in mile 5. A woman who was running near me made eye contact and wished me luck, so we got to chatting a bit and ended up in step with each other all the way until about 5.5. This helped distract and steady me as I finished. Coming into the finish, Jen and Carmela (our track coach) were there to cheer me in!
P.S. No photos because I hate how I look in them (drowned rat at best).
Reflection
The race was fun blah blah blah... This is more of a yearly reflection...I am REALLY proud of myself. This year I got a sub-30 5k and a distance PR (20 miles in training). I'm about to complete my first marathon. I have come a LONG way. I don't want to get too sappy but I'm killing it and I hope to continue to in 2022.
Oh yeah, and this was a massive PR - 7 minutes.
FINAL TIME: 1:02:48
