Disney Marathon 2022 Training Journal
First Run 10k Race Recap

I'm emotional. Just prepare for this to be the most rambling post I've ever posted. Why am I emotional? I DON'T EVEN KNOW. Let me count the ways.

1. My niece tested positive for Covid and while she's fine (she's 5 and has barely a cold) I was very sad about it and did some crying on the way to my (very small & safe) NYE gathering
2. I have to take a covid test before returning to work and while I have zero reason to believe that I will test positive I am weirdly anxious about it because I trained too hard for this marathon for ANYTHING to get in my way
3. All the stuff with flights being cancelled - it's 100% out of my control BUT STILL
4. The Harry Potter Reunion special on HBO - I cry every time I talk about it so I won't take the risk of typing about it just know that I read the first book when I was 8 and the last movie came out when I was 21 so it's been a massive part of my life and deeply influential on who I am as a person

Anyway, I ran a 10k today. Let's talk about it.

Bib Pick Up
Pick up was this morning, pre-race. The email said to get there no later than 9:45 to get everything and warm up before the race started at 11. This made me worried, so my plan as to be there for 9. I ran late and didn't get there until 9:30 or just before. Well... I didn't need to be so early. I could have arrived at 10:30 and had enough time. I walked the quarter mile or so from the parking lot to the bib pick up location, grabbed my bib and hat, and then went to my car to sit in some heat until it was time to get back and start.

Weather was super rainy, btw. I had an old crappy umbrella that I used to walk back and forth and just left behind at the start since I didn't need it. Anyway, I went back to the start and met up for photos with the other girls from the club (all ran the 5k - I was the only 10k runner in our group). The rain stopped... until the race started when it started to downpour.

Oh, let's talk about the race.

The Race
The course is two loops of the 5k course with a slight change on the second loop to make sure you get to 6.2.

Mile 1: 10:17

Mile 2: 9:51
Mile 3: 9:50
Loop number 1 I did with my friend Jen. She said I was setting the pace and I set it maybe a liiiiiittle faster than I should have. I knew I would PR today because I've been doing about a 1:04 6 mile run, so I was expecting roughly a 1:05 (4 minute PR). Anyway, this was a good first loop and she went off to finish. I told her that I didn't mind if she left after she finished so she could dry off (it POURED that first loop) but she wanted to try to stay to cheer for my finish.

Mile 4: 10:01
Mile 5: 10:07
Mile 6: 10:02
I joked with Jen that I was going to slow down in the second half - which I did but not by much. I did okay the first mile, but was struggling a little bit mentally in mile 5. A woman who was running near me made eye contact and wished me luck, so we got to chatting a bit and ended up in step with each other all the way until about 5.5. This helped distract and steady me as I finished. Coming into the finish, Jen and Carmela (our track coach) were there to cheer me in!

P.S. No photos because I hate how I look in them (drowned rat at best).

Reflection
The race was fun blah blah blah... This is more of a yearly reflection...

I am REALLY proud of myself. This year I got a sub-30 5k and a distance PR (20 miles in training). I'm about to complete my first marathon. I have come a LONG way. I don't want to get too sappy but I'm killing it and I hope to continue to in 2022.

Oh yeah, and this was a massive PR - 7 minutes.

FINAL TIME: 1:02:48

You are an inspiration to me! I dream of running like you. Way to go!!!

Disney Marathon 2022 Training Journal

No, I haven't been crying on and off all evening because of the stress of getting to Florida, why do you ask? Anyway, I only ran once this week because this morning was too slippery. I was supposed to meet the girls at 6:30 for 3 shakeout miles, but my building's parking lot was treacherous and getting to my car was a feat. I sat there for a minute and saw some others say it was too slick, so I said the same and then went back inside to get some work done.

I wanted to try to get out later, but even 3 hours later at 9 when I went to do errands it was still slick. And again later, a friend of mine went out for her run and messaged me after to tell me it was still bad in enough spots that she thought I should skip out. So I did.

And now I'm eating an eggo waffle and trying to avoid thinking about, y'know *gestures vaguely* before I finish packing.

Anyway, Tuesday's run.

January 4: 3.03 miles • 31:49 • 10:31 avg pace
I genuinely can't get over this pace. I know this is becoming the norm for me, but still. It was unimaginable to me when I started this whole thing in 2017. And all of this progress has been made very quickly. Anyway, only 4 of us met up because a lot of the girls are getting mild colds or covid and we all skipped dinner because we don't want to get mild colds or covid. I did order a pizza to go. It was delicious.

Plan (Disney plan || My plan)

  • 1/9 - 26.2 miles (race)

Day 1 & 2: Travel & Expo

Travel
We all know that I was a ball of stress leading up to my flight, and when I wrote my last post I was packing and fretting. So let's skip to Friday, which was my travel day.

I woke up at my usual time of 6 am and decided to spend the morning tidying my house and doing the last minute additions to my luggage before my family picked me up for our drive to Logan. I was able to deep clean my bedroom and bathroom, and make sure the kitchen/dining/living was neat and tidy. I like to come home to a clean house. It also kept me from constantly checking on the weather and flight delays.

Around 1, my parents went to pick up Eric, then they got me and we went to the airport. We made it through security no problem and then to our gate. My parents went to the food court to have a quick dinner/drink and while they were there, our flight was delayed by about an hour and a half. So we traded spots and Eric and I went over to the food court where I got a beer and clam chowder.

639657
After that we were delayed by another 30 minutes or so, bringing the total delay to about 2 hours. I didn't care, as long as I made it to Florida. We finally took off and I watched Dear Evan Hansen on the flight. The music is great and I understand what the story's message is supposed to be and it's lovely, but Evan is the least likable protagonist in a musical. I also used this flight time to make sure that Eric and I had a ride from the airport. Jenna and Alex had landed on time, around 8:40 and picked up the rental car (an SUV!) and drove to the hotel to check in (I had called ahead to make sure they could check in on my behalf). My parents got a shuttle to their hotel (Pop Century). And my cousin Ashley was driving down so she picked Eric and I up at the airport.

We made it to the hotel and spent the night catching up and laughing until about 2 am.

Expo

We woke up around 7 am and got dressed and re-packed. We went down to the breakfast at the hotel, then checked out and drove to the Expo. We got there around 10 and started the merch line. Very disappointing that so much didn't make it in time for the expo and therefore there was nothing really left. Luckily, Jenna's friend Makenna was there on Day 1 since she ran Dopey and was able to pick up a jacket and marathon magnet for me.

My cousin Ashley had preordered some stuff, so I went with her to pick it up and this was the first bit of Disney magic from a CM. Ashley had gotten a magnet and some pins in her preorder. While she was there, I asked the CM if there was any chance she had extra pins for me to purchase, but that if not I totally understood and would be fine. I had told her I missed the preorder since it closed so early. She told me she would see what she could do and a few minutes later she was asking which pins and magnets I wanted! So I got all 3 pins I wanted (the medal replica, the weekend logo, and the marathon logo) and the weekend magnet in addition to the jacket and marathon magnet Makenna picked up. Very happy with that.

After merchandise, we walked over to get our bibs and I was in starting group 3. The lines were pretty long for the bibs, but that's because everyone was there for the marathon. Ashley and my line were faster than the line for Jenna and Eric.

Our next step was the expo where we got our shirts (a perfect fit and so comfortable) and did some shopping. I picked up a pair of black goodrs, a cropped tank top from Fit2Run that is light pink and says "I Hate Running," and a Marathoner bracelet from Endure jewelry.

After the expo we went to Disney Springs for a 3:00 lunch reservation at Maria & Enzos (delicious) before going to our hotel and getting an early night's sleep.

And that is where I will leave you! I plan on downloading photopass photos tomorrow, so I hope to get into the race tomorrow and then spend the next week doing a mini trip report.

Disney Marathon 2022 Race Recap Post #2
Marathon

Initial disclaimer: I was inconsistent, at best, with my watch. I didn't always remember to pause it for photo stops or the 3 stops at the medical tents, but I'll sort of try to suss that out as I write this recap. I also really really really did not run this for time. It was my first marathon and at Disney - it was 100% about the experience. I wanted to make stops for photos and my highest priority was to buy a margarita in Mexico to cross the finish line with. Okay, now let's get into the recap part.

Cast of Characters

I feel like you need to know who was on this trip (besides me). So here's a quick rundown...
  • Jenna. Runner. One of my best friends, we started this whole running thing together back in the summer of 2017. She worked for me and then we became running partners, then friends, and then I was in her wedding in 2019. We did go to high school together, but didn't know each other
  • Eric. Runner. We met at work and became great friends in our two years of shared trauma. We dragged him into the running thing for Princess in 2020.
  • Ashley. Runner. My cousin (younger by 9.5 years) and while I wanted to run with her in 2018 during her senior year of high school, she instead came to cheer me on with her mom and my parents and decided there and then that one day she'd join me for a race.
  • Mom & Dad. Spectators. Do I really need to explain how I met them?
  • Alex. Spectator. Jenna met Alex at work when she moved to LA. She's 100% an extension of the east coast group and we've all become fast (long distance) friends.
  • Jeffrey & Hannah & Michael & Emily. Spectators. Jeffrey & Michael are 2 of Ashley's older brothers. Jeffrey is dating Hannah. Emily is Ashley's roommate. They all drove up to cheer for our group and made excellent posters.
Pre-Race

We all woke up around 1:45-2:00 am (after going to bed at around 8:30 pm, so a solid 6ish hours of sleep). We got dressed and packed up for the day. Alex made us breakfast (peanut butter and jelly on an English muffin) and second breakfast to consume just prior to the race (peanut butter and banana sandwiches). We made sure she had a bag of our supplies as we would see her (and the rest of crew) at mile 10 to grab more gus and chews.

Ashley drove us to the race while Alex stayed behind to get herself ready and make a poster for Jenna on behalf of the rest of their coworkers. Our goal was to leave around 3:00/3:15 since we wanted to mimic the time a bus would leave and I think we left by 3:30. We had no traffic heading in and found parking easily. Then we began the 2 mile trek to the start. We were in our starting group by about 4:15 and as we walked in, whoever was on the screen asked who was running their first marathon. Jenna, Ashley and I cheered and Riley was right there with the camera so he asked if he could interview us! We said yes and got ourselves organized and then walked over to the gate when it was almost time.

We were nearly cut for time, but Riley managed to get our interview in, even if it was short, and talked to us about why we wanted to run our first marathon at Disney and if we were nervous and felt ready/trained. Before the interview, he and the CM in charge chatted with us very informally and helped us feel at ease. The interview itself was fine, the mic was cutting in and out when I spoke and Jenna stuttered a bit because it's very weird to hear yourself with the delay. But we had fun and when we crossed the start line around 5:03 am, Riley shouted us out!

The Race

Mile 1: 13:40
Mile 2: 14:19
Mile 3: 13:38
Mile 4: 14:33
Mile 5: 14:03

It was pretty cool to run this part of the course because I recognized a good amount of it from doing parts of it at the end of Princess in 2018 and 2020. I also really liked that mile 2 and 3 were partially in the park, and Spaceship Earth is so pretty at night. I felt really good here and was right about where I expected to be for the pace, in the high 13s and low 14s. I stopped for all of the water/gatorade stops since I was concerned about the impending heat right from the start. I also forgot to fuel at mile 1, so I decided to take 3 bloks every 3 miles instead of 1 every 1 mile. This worked for me. Oh, also, we realized that using "run" and "walk" as a signal for each other was ineffective because everyone used that for their group, so we switched to "gazebo" to mean walk and "hippopotamus" meant run. So if you heard people yelling that... well, that was us and that's what it meant. I also think we met Frozone somewhere in the first (or second?) 5 miles.

639905

Mile 6: 13:52
Mile 7: 14:01
Mile 8: 14:00
Mile 9: 13:56
Mile 10: 14:06

This was the 5 miles from Epcot to Magic Kingdom. I had split up this course in my head in very manageable pieces. Part 1 was the 5 miles in and around Epcot. Part 2 was the 5 miles from Epcot to Magic Kingdom. I can run 5 miles twice. The pace here continues to be pretty good. Right where I expected to be. At this point, we're all just really excited to see our massive cheer squad in Magic Kingdom. I also remembered to pause my watch when we stopped at TTC to use the bathroom (my bathroom stops were right on par with when I practiced them during the 20 miles a few weeks ago).

639906

Mile 11: 17:20

Mile 11 gets its own part because it's Magic Kingdom and the major slow down is because I forgot to stop my watch when we saw our family and friends. My first "holy crap" moment was when I saw Space Mountain, then we went into the park and ran down Main St and that's where I cried for the first and, surprisingly, only time. Usually I cry a lot during a half marathon, but during this marathon I only cried once and wanted to cry one other time. More on that later. My parents were here along with Jeffrey, Hannah, Emily, and Alex. We pulled off the course for some photos and for me to grab some more bloks. We then continued our run (and stopped to meet colonial Goofy) around the park and out.

IMG_0208.JPG639909

Mile 12: 16:07
Mile 13: 13:35
Mile 14: 15:02
Mile 15: 13:33
Mile 16: 13:46

My next block of the race was the run from Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom. This was mostly boring but overall fine. Slowed down a bit because Jenna began to deal with blisters on her foot and we stopped at a medical tent for it to be wrapped. (We might have stopped a second time somewhere in here, but I can't remember. I know we stopped at two medical tents prior to the one at Blizzard Beach). I think it's Mile 12 and 14 where we stopped? Because it's a bit slower there. But in our typical miles we maintained the pace we had set as our goal. I was expecting it to be significantly warmer than it was here, too. I took some bloks with salt around here to be preemptive since I've struggled with salt in the past.

Mile 17: 13:32

We'll give Animal Kingdom its own section, too. We entered the park and there was a donkey! So I sang a little bit of "bye bye lil Sebastian" even though it wasn't a miniature horse, but the donkeys brought the same amount of joy as a miniature horse would. Going through AK was a lot of fun, but leaving was actually sort of discouraging. I'm assuming there was a sweep or we were further back than I thought, but when I left I expected to see people coming into the park and instead they were cleaning up the course. In fact, there were a handful of moments after the half point where I noticed there were fewer volunteers and that they had begun to break down tables or were having some trouble keeping up with the need for water/powerade. Something about it was sort of difficult to see. Anyway... we left! And onto the worse part of the course.

639910

Mile 18: 16:09
Mile 19: 13:48
Mile 20: 15:34
Mile 21: 14:26
Mile 22: 20:26

The run from Animal Kingdom to the Blizzard Beach parking lot was okay at best. It was hot. And I was tired. And the wall was right there. And I ran headfirst into it. At mile 18 I finally shook a pebble out of my sneaker that had been bothering me. My blister was also starting to be an issue, so Jenna and I stopped at the med tent in the BB parking lot (I clearly forgot to pause my watch). On my way there, I realized that I needed more salt since I was losing feeling in my arms, but since it wasn't as hot as I expected and I had taken some earlier, I didn't have any. I asked a medic on a bike if he had any, but they did not. Luckily, a woman next to me heard me and gave me a salt tab and Jenna let me use her water to drink its down. Before I got the salt, though, I did a little bit of holding back tears because I was so concerned about it. I think we got the sponges here? And bags of ice right after BB. Those helped a little bit. Also at BB is when Jenna and Alex's other friend/coworker caught up to us and we decided to all spend the last few miles together. We definitely slowed down a bit here, more walking than running. But that's OK. We also stopped to meet Olaf!

Mile 23: 17:12
Mile 24: 16:55

Hollywood Studios. Blink and you'll miss it. More walking than running since it was hot and sunny leaving BB and entering HS. I didn't stop for candy because, while I like Milky Way, I didn't want any. Saw a great sign on the way out of HS. I think this section also encompasses the path from HS to the boardwalk. Honestly, I think that section, especially the boardwalk, was the best part. We were struggling mentally. Not doing a lot of running. But when we saw people out there cheering, it encouraged us to speed up a bit. Run a little more. And seeing people with the medal and the ears! I was so excited about the ears.

639911639912

Mile 25: 16:10
Mile 26.2: 19:28

The end was primarily through world showcase! We pulled off to the side to meet Jasmine and then I stopped in Mexico for my margarita - the one thing I wanted to do. Earlier in the race, I wasn't sure if I would end up doing it since I wasn't feeling great due to the heat and the blister and because of my concerns after AK, but once we left Blizzard Beach and saw a lot of people still behind us, I felt a little better about it. So when we got to Mexico, I went to La Cantina de San Angel and was looking at the menu. The woman standing there in line let me cut her (she had run the half the day before and had a huge group of friends coming through Epcot after me) so I could get through it faster and Makenna and Jenna didn't need to wait so long. I got The Wild One - my favorite margarita at Cava. This woman's group of friends all met on Instagram! Something like 30 something of them all met up at Disney for the race. Anyway, she offered to get me my drink but I was able to talk her out of it and get my own drink. Sorry to the people behind her in line.

639913

Anyway, I got my drink and had a little bit of it. Then we made our way out of Epcot and across the finish line! I crossed with my margarita - just like I wanted! Seeing my friends and family at the end was incredible. I didn't cry (I joked that it was because I had no liquid left in my body). We got our medals and a cooling towel. Jenna stopped at medical to wrap her knee, then we got our gatorade, our mickey ears hat, our snack boxes, and out to the reunion area for photos and hugs and love. This is where I found out that my cousin Michael also drove up to surprise Ashley and me!

After that, we went to get our "I finished" photos with Photopass. While we were there, lots of people went down. Every few minutes we would hear someone call for medical. They worked on someone for some time right next to our photo line. The heat and a marathon is no joke. Eric went pale for a moment there and we sat him down in the shade and made him eat his applesauce and chips until he felt better. We headed out (minus Ashley who stayed to hang with her brothers and friends and minus my parents who went to Epcot for the day) and went home to freshen up.

More on the post-race shenanigans later.

Total Time According to Garmin: 6:44:52
Final Time According to Disney: 7:14:54

Disney Marathon 2022 Race Recap Post #3
Reflections & Post-Marathon Recap

I didn't really do any reflections about my first race in that last post, huh? So before I talk about what we did that night, I'll do a little bit of reflection on the race overall.

First off, I really liked that they started early and quickly. I was over the start at 5:03 am, so I don't think the heat was nearly as bad as it could have been if the start was at all delayed. It was definitely warm, but I didn't feel it and it didn't bother me until well after the halfway point. I vote 5 am start forever.

I hate the new POT cutoff. I will be the first to admit that I totally used it to my advantage. I am not someone who will be running a sub-4 hour marathon, and I'm okay with that. But by making the POT sub-4, lots of people said they were way faster than they are. I am one of them. Because I wanted a cushion. We can debate this - right, wrong, whatever. I'd do it the same. They should go back to the original POT requirements and help distribute the field again.

The teams at the med tents are the superheroes of this race. I don't know what magic they worked on my blister, but once they wrapped it I had zero discomfort. Their little jellyfish and bandaid combo works.

If you feel a pebble in your shoe, don't wait until mile 18 to shake it out.

Wear glitter. And sunscreen. But mostly glitter.

Post-Race

After the race, we hobbled our butts to the car and went back to the hotel to shower and change for a night out. I am a big believer that you gotta keep moving after the race. I also decided to sit upside down and throw my legs against the wall. Draining the lactic acid and all (I don't know, I used to do this at track practice in high school sometimes). Oh, and I found out that I had a super wild tan line. You can see it a little bit in the photo below. I also took the first of many glamour shots of my medal (and my marathoner bracelet that I am OBSESSED with from endure jewelry).

640171640172

After getting ready, we drove to the Polynesian where we had some dinner and the first of the celebratory drinks. I got the pulled pork nachos from Captain Cooke's (delicious). We also go the Blue Hawaiian Float from Pineapple Lanai. I had marathon brain, so I did not even notice that it was a RunDisney special drink. Also, they served a shot of rum on the side - the CMs working said that they weren't told how to mix it into the drink (pour the rum into the juice seems like the obvious answer to me, but I'm not a bartender so I don't know). Anyway, it very very pretty and very delicious and definitely was a lime dole whip, not pineapple.

640179640178

While we did all this drinking and eating, we were waiting to be called to a table in Trader Sam's. And we were! They estimated about a 2 hour wait and it was right on. We added ourself to the virtual queue sometime between 3 and 4... and were called around 5 or 6? I can't remember the exact time frame. But the 2 hour wait time was exact because I remember us being impressed that it was so accurate.

Anyway, I got Rosita's margarita (Casamigos Reposado Tequila, Bols Orange Curaçao, fresh Lime Juice, Falernum, and Organic Agave Nectar). Makenna got the Skipper Sipper (Tropical Juices, Organic Agave Nectar, Falernum, Mint, and fresh Lime Juice topped with Soda Water). Jenna and Alex shared the UhOa (Plantation Original Dark Rum, Bacardi Superior Rum, Orange, Passion Fruit, Guava, Pineapple, and Grapefruit Juices, Falernum, Cinnamon, and fresh Lime Juice) which I did not like because I do not like fire or putting my fingers near cinnamon that makes the fire go big. Eric got a seasonal drink that I can't remember anything about. The drinks that had like, the effects were a lot of fun. It took a minute to sort of catch on. But you could tell the people that had been there... all... day... There was a really obnoxious group there. That's all.

640190640191
After our drinks, we decided to pack up and head over to the Contemporary on the monorail to see the fireworks from the balcony. And we found out that Bob Saget died! In Orlando! WE WERE IN ORLANDO. Anyway, I hate fireworks. I cover my ears the entire time. The show ended and we took a ton of pictures of Makenna with her Dopey medals since she was flying home the next day and then we drove her back to her hotel and then we went to our hotel to go to bed because the next day is... Epcot! Drinking Around The World!

I wish I could tell you where our glitter came from. We got it for Jenna's bachelorette. I think the gel that the glitter is mixed into has aloe in it, so it's good for the skin and did not come off until I showered! Jenna did accidentally wipe some of hers off. I did a google to see if I could find it and unicorn snot came up, which is not what we have but seems similar!

@DopeyBadger, you have evidence compiled on why glitter makes you race faster, right? :)

there has to be substantive data on this 😂

@DopeyBadger, you have evidence compiled on why glitter makes you race faster, right? :)

Actually there is. It’s the perception of “look good feel good”. There was a study where runners were told they would run in either a basic kit or a Nike kit. When they ran in the Nike kit, they ran faster. Truth was, both kits were basic. They believed the Nike kit made them faster and so it did, despite being the same. So if you believe the glitter makes you faster, then it will.
