I want a goldendoodle or a labradoodle....

I have a Goldendoodle and let me tell you why.

We have children with allergies and Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic. We did not want a little tiny dog that barks all the time (which what most hypoallergenic dogs are). Goldendoodles for the most part do not shed! So we got a big dog, that doesn't shed.

She is the sweetest, gentlest dog ever. Very smart - easily trained- housebroken in about 3 weeks. I can leave her home for a few hours and will not touch a thing in the house.

Yes I could have gone to the SPCA (fr free) but those dogs are usually there for a reason - my neighbor returned 3or 4 so far that she got at the pound.

Who cares if it's a mixed breed. I'm not showing her. I know lot of people who pay way more than a doodle- just stictly for a pet. Mixed breed tend to be healthier than a purebred - get the best of both breeds.

In the long run if you are going to have a dog for 15 years it was worth the investment to have a dog that has all the qualities you are looking for. I must admit my husband didn't want to pay $800 for her but was so glad we did. we have no complaints about this type of dog.

To us with small children it was worth paying money and knowing the background of the dog rather than winging it with an unknown.

So please don't judge too harshly. Therese are wonderful dogs!!

And you have a JRT...you have to be careful adding another dog with them sometimes...I have seen those dogs attack bigger dogs and kill smaller ones in a heartbeat, especially if their alpha status feels threatened.

The OP isn't Monty Dog's Esmeralda. :)

I agree with everyone...I wouldn't pay that much for a mixed dog. We have a Yorkie and I HATE when people talk to us about their expensive "teacup yorkie". A Yorkie isn't supposed to be 1 pound...geesh!

Yup, due to people who bought/got a dog on a whim and didn't do enough research as to what is involved in being a good owner.

Check out PetFinder. Plenty of dogs are on there because they got too big  or their owners didn't have enough time for them. not because they are bad dogs.

Girl Scout Leader, they are using Standard Poodles (50+ pounds) not miniature & toy poodles.

I'll be right back, I need put my flame-resistant suit on first.

Okay, I'm back. Let the FLAMING begin, I am the owner of a Goldendoodle. If I can I will post some pics. Now before all of you start throwing stones, I'm going to explain why we chose this breed. We had a Dalmatian previously (the true puppy love of my life). He was a wonderful dog, but had terrible health problems starting around age 6. We were able to keep him comfortable for about 6-1/2 years & then he suffered for a few more monthes until we had to make that horrible decision. Anyway, Dalmatians are extremely HIGH shedders & we believe 100% in indoor dogs (they are a part of the family). Our Dal Ike, was wonderful & could NEVER be replaced, I made the decision a long time ago, if I was ever able to give my heart again, it would have to be a completely different dog from him, I didn't want to have anything to compare to. I decided female, no spots, no shedding, longer hair - BUT also said I would never have another dog, just too painful. Also, due to allergies of some dogs & cats, that was a factor.
When my kids came up last summer beg, beg, BEGGING for a puppy, DH decided to let that be their Christmas. DS wanted a Golden Ret., because of Air Bud, I wanted a Standard Poodle but DH said NO. I also considered a Bearded Collie, beautiful dogs, but read that they shed some. So, I did a web search for Low Shedding Dogs & a list of both Labradoodles & Goldendoodles came up. After doing tones of research on both ( and realizing how most of the breeders take this breed VERY serious - not backyard breeders - most have their labs, goldens, poodles all tested for hips, eyes, etc. they offer health warranties for these dogs as well.
After looking at the pics they looked like happy, goofy, playful dogs. Seemed also like it was a good compromise Golden & Std Poodle. Dh & I decided to go with it. We did not pay that much, but did pay. I have friends who thought we were crazy, but they think nothing about paying $200-300 for a pair of shoes or purse - not me. I will have this dog longer than I will have a pair of shoes, and longer than I'll keep my car for that matter. People will pay $30,000+ for a car & sell it 3-4 years later, but a dog is a 10-15 years.
Now, is she a handful? Absolutely, she has tons of energy, but having had a Dal., we are no stranger to active dogs. She has tons of energy but also has 2 kids to play with. She is EXTREMELY tolerant of DD & DS, they pull her tail, her whiskers, beard (we call her our Bearded lady), etc. They can take food away from her (however, we don't encourage that). She & DD had a tugging match the other day over a BlowPop, Annabelle (the dog) won that match LOL! I have read others that have siad - go to the pound. That was a consideration but we had friends that had to take a dog BACK to the pound after showing aggression.
For those of you out there that push pure breed - if you will look into many breeds, you will find most are of mixed origin. Goldens & Dobermans come to mind (can't think right off what they were originally bred with but can probably be found on the AKC webpages).
Esmerelda, before considering this breed, I would look into some of the websites & Goldendoodle & Labradoodle discussion boards. Make sure this is the dog for you. They can be very mischievous & will take things that don't belong to them (that could just still be the puppy in her though). I have seen some starting to pop up for rehome. (I remember after we bought our Dal, 101 Dalmatians resurfaced & Dal's were filling the shelters, due to the popularity - I see the same happening with these dogs.) They do require some upkeep, but are very happy & playful dogs. Good Luck with your decision & let the flaming begin!!!

Thanks. Wasn't me. We've considered other dogs a few times not but have reached the conclusion that Monty Dog is enough for us now. We might get another JRT someday from a JRT rescue. But not today.

Occasionally, we take in foster pets until forever homes can be found for them. Monty is almost always okay with them. But we have not had a foster in a while either.

I have no problem with well bred purebreds. I think each family needs to decide for itself what it wants in a dog. For some people a pound puppy is not always the best choice, esp. if there are kids or allergies or kids with allergies involved.

I also like when people adopt dogs from pounds, but the final decision as to where to get your new furry friend is just up to the family involved.

Breed rescue organizations are another great choice for people who want a purebred but want to rescue.

Its not a breed. Its a mix. And if you don't mind paying $$$$ for it,the people that are ripping you off don't either.

Why not try the St Bernard-Poodle breed: Stroodle
or
the Akita-Beagle-Poodle: Kit-n-Kaboodle

airhead (name seems to fit)

These dogs are not a rip off. They are very good dogs. Like someone else said a couple hundred dollars over 15 years is nothing. People pay a lot more for cars, etc. You must not be a true dog lover to post that response when you know nothng about these dogs.

and had to pay 1500.00 for him.......he is a beautiful dog and if you read the sites that are written about just these dogs........They are very well bred as any pure bred dog is.......remember alot of the dogs that are now recognized by the AKC are dogs that have been interbred with other types to come to another breed of dog........The labradoodle was bred for the main reason ......allergies......this is the reason that the people I know bought one........the kids all wanted a puppy and the father was allergic to most breeds.....no allergy ....no shedding and very very intelligent animal........it is not just a mongrel .....as any breed........to much breeding is not good and does come out as an inferior dog.......

This is the first I have ever heard of this breed!

LOL! They breed them with Standard Poodles, not Toys!

Timely subject. Dh and I are talking about someday getting a puppy-- when our cat leaves us. I've been seeing a lot of mixed breeds advertised-- Spitz Lhasa Apsa (I know I spelled it wrong, too lazy to look it up), and all sorts of things mixed with Pugs. Is there any mixed breed breeders association like the AKC where you can check these dogs out?

As for the pound, a guy dh works with is a dog lover. He's always had dogs from the pound, takes good care of them, etc. Recently he's had to return a few because they were uncontrollable. We had hoped to get a dog from the pound (if we ever get one) but this has scared us off.

Thanks for the interesting discussion all,
Julie

Before you attempt to insult me again, I'm an airbrush artist. In my biz,we're known as "airheads" . Get it????
As far as not being a dog lover,I'm not even going to address that.
What I will address, and what others have already stated here,is the reason why pure bred dogs are expensive . Good breeders spend a lot of money to insure that the dogs they breed
will be clear of breed specific problems. The price of a pure bred dog is due to all the tests and research that a good breeder must do. There's little profit if any. For good breeders, the intent is to further the breed and produce offspring as close to the standard
set by AKC(American Kennel Club, just for your info...)

I never said your mix is a bad dog or not a sweet dog. What I said was you're being ripped off. These people ARE breeding for profit.

Airhead(... and wicked proud of it!)

And a darn good one too. :)

I know someone who has a cockapoo and it's a cute little dog. He rescued it from the pound and it's his 9 year old sons pet.

But back to the issue of $$. Good breeders do not make much if any profit. What Airhead said. They breed to further the breed. They charge $$ to cover their costs which can often be quite high usually, and also, a lot of times, people are less likely to abuse something they have spent some $$ on.

Airhead, I think you should do a little research on these 2 mixed breeds. Breeders take it VERY serious. They charge what they do because reputable breeders have had their Labs or Goldens & Poodles tested for hips, eyes, etc & many breeders own both the Retriever & Poodle (doubling the expense), 1-2 year health warranties (depending on breeders) come with reputable Golden/Labradoodle breeders & most breeders require that you sign a spay/neuter agreement before receiving the puppy, to avoid more unwanted puppies in shelters. If you do decide to research on the web, I think you will find breeders & owners of Doodle are very passionate about their dog. I believe that if more people would invest the time to research & money for their dogs, than perhaps, fewer owners would be so quick to put them in shelters.

I will say that Doodles are not for everyone, but what dog is.

Jennifer S  Hi, fellow Doodle owner!!!

Sorry airhead. I had no idea what that was. I do get it. I just get very upset when people insult my dog. I know all about breeding and most reputable Goldendoodle breeders do all the same testing(hip dysplasia etc.) so they are not pocketing a huge profit either. There are good and bad breeders of all kinds so you can't say that one type of breeder is bad just based on the type of dog they are raising.

Sorry again if i upset you.

This is a happy and a sad subject. I am happy to hear that so many people know the abuse that many dogs suffer when they are seen as baby-making machines. People that breed for the purpose of making money, 'just to have a litter', or because they love their *****/dog... are not really helping anyone. There are millions of dogs, both purebreds and mixes put to sleep every year.
I am a rescue volunteer and currently have 3 miniature pinscher puppies (purebred) available for adoption. I believe that I have finally found a home for two of them - and this is after receiving close to 100 inquiries about these puppies. (They are now going on 5 months old and I have been accepting applications since they were 2 months old.) They are not going home with just anyone that can come up with the adoption fee... instead, they will go home with someone that knows about the miniature pinscher breed and are prepared to deal with these puppies.
To all of you that have had bad experiences at the pound: I'm sorry that you have encountered this. I would suggest trying a rescue organization where the dogs are kept in foster homes rather than a shelter. This way the dog's temperment is already known.
I can't suggest enough that people do research before they bring a dog home... no matter where it is coming from. See the parents before you buy a puppy. If you don't see at least the mother of the puppies... then you should imagine the worst, there's a good chance that it's worse then you can imagine.
I have been to puppymills and seen backyard breeders. Both can be a very sad situation for the breeding dogs.
Good Luck to all of those looking for the next new member of their family... the perfect dog is out there waiting for you!!!

:wave2: princess:

Pure bred dogs from reputable breeders are not always what they are cracked up to be. We have two cocker spaniels from championship lines. The oldest is twelve and is completely deaf and blind. The youngest is 6 and had cataracts in both eyes before the age of 1 costing us $2500 to remove.

Our first cocker was a bit of mix and had no pure blood-lines. He was the best and least problematic dog of the three.

Sure the breeder will let you return the dog if it has a problem, but who would do that after you've grown attached to the dog.

A dog, is a dog, is a dog. Get one who's shedding habits, exercise habits and personality matches your family. If it is a cross breed that best matches these requirements, then so be it.

The experiences I have had with friends who own cross-breeds has been nothing but positive.

Most pure breds started out as crosses of some type and remained crosses until they were accepted as their own breed. In time, I'm sure that will happen with these mixed breeds.

If you find a mom and dad dog that you like, chances are the offspring will be what you are looking for.

Good luck and keep us posted!

We have a schnoodle which is half minature schnauzer, half minature poodle (minature is not tthe same as toy size, they still get to be a pretty decent size). Its the best dog I've ever had. I've never understood why some people are so up in arms over mix-breeds or don't think they are worth the money just because the AKC doesn't recognize them. I can tell you the dog provides just as much fun, love and devotion as an AKC breed. We chose not to get a pound puppy, because the last cat we had was adopted from the SPCA and had many health problems (and big vet bills along with that). He had been adopted before we had kids and now we were more concerned about not having an animal that was constantly sick thus worrying the kids. We chose a schnoodle 1) because he was hypoallergenic (very important for ds and dh's allergies), and did not shed 2)they fit the energy level dog we wanted 3)they are very hardy 4)easily trained and very smart 5)great with kids. In other words, this dog was easily housebroken, learned to play fetch the first week at our house, not yippy and hyper, she loves to play but was just as happy laying at my feet, does great in our small backyard, and she deals very well with the kids tugging on her and pulling her every which way (which they still do from time to time despite our kid-training on proper handling of the dog). She is so loving and so wonderful (and soo cute) that I can just never understand why some people are so anti mix-breed (or say its a rip-off????). I've had a pure bred golden retriever before as well as a cocker spaniel. I'll take my schnoodle anyday. Also someone made the comment about diseases in mix breed dogs. According to all my research they are usually less prone to disease and health problems then pure bred when they are bred right (I think dogbreedinfo.com talks about that). We were able to meet our dogs mom and dad and know the health, size and temperment of them to before we decided (just like any pure bred), and because her parents are pure bred we were still able to check their lines and certification. We paid well under $1,000, but I know plenty people who pay well over that for their pure breds. Its what you feel comfortable spending, and how much the dog is worth to you. The love you'll get back is priceless.
