I want a goldendoodle or a labradoodle....

Hybrid vigor is a fallacy. And all of your careful breeding goes right out the window once these dogs are being produced in every puppymill in the country.
It is not the cost that I object to, but the fact that most (not all) doodles are coming from so-called breeders that are only in it for the quick profit, NOT the betterment of the dogs or the honest creation of a new breed.

BTW, how many generations do your doodles go back? I've heard that less than three generations and you can't guarantee ANY trait for inheritance in terms of non/low shed, coat, temperment, etc.

I guess it takes all kinds of idiots to make the world go round,,glad your the top!!

I agree with the other posts- get a pound puppy. There are so many dogs that need good homes.

We have two retriever mix pound puppies. They are brother and sister and fantastic pets.

Exactly, which is why you need to do your research whether you're getting a mutt, a hybrid or a pure bred dog. The fact is that most DOGS are coming from so-called breeders that are in it only for a quick profit (or by accident).

The breeder I got my cockapoo from is very active in setting certain standards for kennels that breed poos. She's definately in it for the betterment of the dogs, based on her standards of the parents. Not just physical qualities, but personality and temperment, too. And no, she doesn't breed second generation dogs because of the reason you give, you can't predict once you start breeding hybrids. Which is why hybrids won't get akc acceptance, and good breeders aren't wishing for it. I don't consider my poo a breed. She's a hybrid, like my car. The poo fit what I was looking for, and I actually had an easier time researching poos and finding reputible breeders (can I call them breeders, or should they be hybriders?) was actually easier than finding a good spaniel or labrador breeder, since you don't have that "show quality" or "championship line" stuff to cut through.

That picture of Flash looks like the larger version of my Clara. Cute as a button, but so black she doesn't photograph well.

It doesn't surprise me to have read this entire thread and see some of the responses I have seen. There will always be rotten eggs in life, on the DIS.....I've smelled a few before and they just keep on stinking.

I think the doodlepoo or retrieverpoodoodle or whatever it is is just precious!!!!! ADORABLE!

Why should what someone else pays for THEIR dog bother YOU?

I bought my pure bred Cocker Spaniel at a pet store ($250):

Died May 2002, age 12

I bought our pure bred English Bull Dog from a breeder ($1350 plus $150 to fly from CA):

Age 2.25yrs

Our Bulldog was $350.00 less than normal, because he wasn't show quality. We didn't care. We were buying him for our family pet.

I have had mixed dogs and pure bred dogs, both.

It's the dog I liked and fell in love with, not the paperwork!!!!

What does the paperwork mean to me............ nothing. Never planned on showing the dogs, so WHO CARES? But I have it.
No one ever believed my Cocker was pure bred anyhow. They always thought she was a Springer of some sort.

The Cocker, I thought .... someday I'll breed her. Never did.
The Bulldog, had him fixed.

Breeding is HARD work. Profits are very little.

Get a dog you like, can afford, have done research on and don't worry about what others think. You know what they say about opinions. :teeth:

And he is wonderful. He is smart and gentle, funny and a big teddy bear.

As for the cost, there have been talks about this on the doodle discussion forums. Breeders there have explained what they pay to breed the dogs and they really don't make much money from it. I don't understand why it costs $500 to make a Luis Vutton (sp?) purse. But if that is what you want to spend your money on, more power to you. I prefer to spend my money on a best friend that will be by my side unconditionally for the next 10-15 years.

We all know there are puppy mill breeders out there who will try to make a quick buck off of these dogs. But name a breed out there that there is not this type of thing happening to. There isn't one. Do your research and you will find there are tons of very reputable breeders out there.

I love my mutt. (Attempting to post a pic)

Oh yeah, for KathyTX, if you're reading, I live in Highland Village. We're neighbors :)

Woo-hoo, AggieVik! Your big old fluffy dog is precious.

I'll stand on the roof and wave in your direction. :sunny:

More than likely true, but at least that hairy dog might not shed! My two mutts (and my 2 cats) shed so much!

Also, I do not want a small dog...to me a dog has to be 50lbs or more or its just not my kind of dog. I don't want anything small enough to jump on my couch...LOL Seriously, I do not care for smaller/lap type dogs.

I'm going to remind my 55 pound dog that she shouldn't be on the couch! (after that I'll tell the cats to get off the table) ;) She's a lab mix and sheds a lot! When I bought a new couch I bought one that would match her hair...

Yes, and proud of it.

If you can't answer an HONEST question about your dogs, their breeding and your lines, then you shouldn't be breeding.

Geez folks....this really wasn't supposed to turn into the dog debate of the year here. I simply asked a question regarding the price of the puppies....no one needs to wad their knickers over it.

I apprecaiate alll the posts 'regarding' my original post and all the PM's I received about doodles. As I stated earlier, I am researching the best dog for MY family. These dogs have quite a great reputation but also quite a pricetag. I may end up spending $1,000 for one next spring...not sure yet. I do know that they are a great type of dog for a family and have a longer life expectancy than a regular golden or a regular lab which I found interesting.

Above is a pic from one of the sites I have found. I think these dogs are absolute adoreable as puppies and grown! Look at that sweet face...:)

good luck to all and thanks for posting all the cute pet pics! They are awesome!

This thread cleared up a mystery for me. The other week when we were tubing down the river we saw a dog that we could not place, it looked like a log haired black lab, now I know what it was. It was beautiful. Thanks!

I haven't read all the previous posts. With all respect to you airhead, because you do know 'a bit' about canines, I have to say that just because they dogs aren't recognized by the AKC yet, doesn't make them lesser dogs. Yes, they do cost a lot. I have seen very reputable breeders combining these two..poodles and goldens or labs. They are two breeders, working in tandam to get the best of both worlds. Lest we forget, the golden is itself a culmination of many different breeds over the years. I don't think there are too many dog breeds that are completely 'pure'. As long as you check out the breeder's lines, on both sides, it shouldn't be any different than a 'one breed' pup.

Now, a story that justifies buying purebred. My bil has three dogs. Two Wire Haired Foxes and a Soft Coated Wheaten. One of the WH Foxes is a purebred, from a breeder. She has few health issues or behavior issues. The other Fox is somewhat of a 'nasty' dog. He certainly does have some issues. The Wheaten is a mess. He was rescued and now we all realize why. He can't be left alone, he snarls, he destroys homes, goes berserk over loud noises. Now, I know this isn't his fault. But since we have small children in the family it is an issue. My bil now says that obviously you get what you pay for!!! He has even apologized to his wife about complaining about the price tag on the purebred from the breeder. So, either get a pound puppy from an organization that will back up it's dog, or check out breeders thoroughly. Otherwise you just don't know what you are getting.

I don't see how anybody could sell themselves as a 'breeder' of these 'goldendoodles' and 'labradoodles'. They aren't even real breeds recognized by the AKC.

And $1,000 is way too much to pay for a made up breed somebody just happened to thow together in their spare time. I say save your money and buy a REAL breed...like a labrador, poodle or spaniel of some sort. :)

I agree..What a "great " idea..Take 3 of the most overbred breeds and mix them together. Call them something cute, because if you called them the mutt they really are no one would buy one...Then charge an outrageous amount for them, and hope that you can fool someone into thinking they are getting anything other than a half breed....

I say go get a pound puppy, too. Let's not encourgage this kind of irresponsible breeding... JMO, of course...

Maybe it was a flat-coated retriever. Did it look like this?

I am also big into the pound puppy concept. We got our first dog from a rescue organization. He was about 4 years old (older than I was looking for) and he chose us. His name is Magic (we were waiting until after a trip to WDW to get a dog so thought Magic was a fitting name) and he'd been in the rescue home for 2 years--they'd bring him to the Petsmart adoptions, but nobody wanted him until we came along. :( He now about 11yo or so and doing great.

We also adopted my sister's dog. She had a bad marriage end and she needed to get rid of the dog. She drove it from her hom in Idaha or me in Maryland. The dog is a mutt (lab crossed with who knows what other breeds) and is a nice dog. We've had her for a year and she's 2yo.

However, I can see the case for getting certain purebreds or crosses. A non-shedding dog sounds wonderful, especially for people with mild dog hair allergies. No, it's not certain that a cross will have certain traits, such as not shedding much, but there is a higher probability.

As long as these dogs are not promoting something immoral or illegal I won't worry about it, even though I might not wish to go that route.

Used to be that cockapoos were very popular and I don't recall people being real upset about that cross.
