I think the tide is starting to turn AGAINST the war..

I saw the gentleman on tv holding up his son's picture screaming at George Bush...... his son was killed in the chopper crash that killed 4 marines and 8 RAF.... it was mechanical not combat related- It was an accident. I hope that he can someday be proud of his son's dedication and service to his country instead of blame the Commander in Chief for the accident that took his life.

I think the media is TRYING to turn people against this war.... and I agree with Kyle, in a limited capacity it might work.

I don't know where it's written that if you're against this war (or any other) you're unpatriotic nor do I understand why you're a bloodthirsty war monger if you support it. PrincessAriel, you're certainly entitled to your opinion and perhaps in a utopian society there'd be no need for wars and military, but we don't live in that world. Until we do, I'm in favor of a strong military and sometimes that means I'm in support of military action.

For a number of reasons I protested the Vietnam war. Likewise, for various reasons, I support this one. I don't feel the need to justify my stance either, not to you or anyone else, but I resent being portrayed as bloodthirsty just because you don't agree with my position.

Some British were shot down by our "friendly fire" too. What is Tony Blair going to say about that? Will British support still be as strong?

Tony Blair probably won't say much about it, since it was a faulty transponder on the plane that led to the shoot-down. It is a tragedy, no doubt, but friendly fire happens, and there is only so much that can be done to stop it.

There's also been news that its not as easy or short as we thought it would be.

Maybe it's been longer than some of the pundits thought, but the President and SECDEF have said from the beginning that it wouldn't be quick and easy.

There was another story on the news- a man lost his military son and said: "President Bush, you took my ONLY SON." I take it that he wont be voting for Bush in 2004.

In the tape I saw, the man said "Look President Bush - this was my only son". I've yet to see anything where the man says "Bush killed my son".

As for him voting for President Bush in 2004, odds are that he didn't vote for President Bush in 2000 either, so I doubt his son's death changed anything vis a vis his vote.

Anyone else feel this change in the "war barometer"?

Nope. I think it is just wishful thinking on the part of the folks that were against taking any action in the first place. Polls still show strong support for the war. While that could obviously change, I think it's a little early to say such a thing is happening at this point.

I guess since DH was in the Gulf War, I didn't see it as being "easy" and I do remember over 300 American military lives were lost and almost 2 dozen POW's-including a female-were held. Scott Speicher is still MIA. There were scud missles aimed at the military and Israel. Lives were lost from these too. There were friendly fire incidents also! We did not have the reporters on the front lines, but I can tell you, my DH was in danger during that war. His regiment lost 3 soldiers in Iraq. There were 5 weeks of bombing, followed by the 100 hour ground war. I could tell you stories of bravery and heroism that the media never knew.
And yes, the man's son was a volunteer in the military. Bush did not make him join. I saw other relatives of POW's saying how proud they are and it is for a just cause. The media does not seem to focus on those clips though  ! The media seems to be able to sway people who don't have a real understanding of what is going on-through DH's experiences and following real news stories, I know we MUST be there.

Well I didn't see the tape, but either way he sounds like a father who is grieving the death of his son. Which is understandable, we all would be (well all of us but GG, because she'll never have any sons LOL) but that being said:

His son signed up for the military. This is a volunteer armed forces, we are not in a draft. His son CHOSE this career. Perhaps his father vehemently disagreed with his son's choice; we don't know. But the fact remains that his son chose a career knowing full well that he could die for his country and he chose it anyway. If the father doesn't understand or agree with that, that was their fight. President Bush had nothing to do with it, and to blame him for the death of a son who made a conscious choice is out of line.

Where on this thread did I say you were bloodthirsty. Matter of fact I don't recall replying to anything YOU posted on this thread until now.

As far as you justifying yourself to me..UMM not a requirement on my part. We don't know each from ADAM so what you or anyone else do is of no importance to me. Just as I'm sure my life is of no importance to you.

Enough...anyone wishing to have a proper debate on the different issues raised here is welcome to state it in a proper debate format on the debate board. This is starting to get personal so we are done.
