I think my son has pmle!

PMLE- polymorphic light eruption- caused by exposure to sunlight...is a common condition in which exposure to sunlight causes itchy lesions to develop on the skin. The rash is most common on the face, hands, arms, neck or whatever part of the body is exposed to the sun. most common in females, fairly rare for males.

well it turns out that most likely he has fifths disease. this was the last thing i would have thought of. im just glad that its not plme or anything else that would inhibit him going swimming. thank you all for taking the time to respond to this thread.:flower3:

Don't be surprised if the rash comes and goes for several, SEVERAL days. You may think the rash is gone, then put him in that bath tub and poof...the rash is back! It can be annoying.

Thank you for the definition! :thumbsup2

I HAD THAT in January...spent 11 days in the Mayan Riviera and had all these tiny, itchy bumps..mainly arms, chest area, etc. Had to buy a cream at a pharmacy to help with the itching!! :scared: Now I know what it likely was!

I had never heard of PMLE either but I think my partner had that after our last Disney trip! She had a horrible itchy rash that covered her arms & neck. She tried different creams and Benedryl and nothing helped, it got to the point that her skin was just dry red & itchy so she went to the doctor and he gave her a shot & steroid cream to clear it up. Didn't mention PMLE though. We assumed it was an allergic reaction to the sunscreen we used, since she has sensitive skin & is allergic to a lot of things. We haven't been back to WDW since then, but we did go to FL the following year and she didn't have a reaction. By then she'd started using Aveeno Baby sunscreen; it's SPF 50 so maybe that protected her skin enough? Interesting.

Most likely has fifths? Have you seen the doctor? Fifths starts out with a "lacy" rash, that looks like the child's face has been slapped, then spreads to the torso. It's viral, so has to run its course, but you should have your son avoid anyone pregnant. It's an odd time of year to contract fifths.

To be honest, it sounded like strep to me. If he hasn't seen the doctor, I'd take him in.

Hope he feels better soon!

Scratchy itchy bumps could also be from sea lice when you swim in the ocean.

Wondering if PMLE is commonly called sun poisoning here in Florida. Tourists get it all the time from being out in the sun not realiziing that the angle it hits Florida is different than up North and they burn here even if they never burn at home. The burn than gets a rash that itches.

I would agree, sounds more like sun poisoning, prickly heat rash issue. The sun is so strong because we are 6000ft up here that my sons in their infant/toddler years got it a couple times while at older brothers tball games etc.
Does the rash move locations...like die down in one area and then flare up in another or seem to like move around?
That or the chemical reaction to the sun screen.
5th disease has very prominent stages, to include the slap on the face first, and moves on after that...its not just a rash that just appears.

From what I understand (and I think it's what I get), PLME is not "small, itchy bumps." Rather, it's large red blotches that are slightly raised and looks really pretty gross. It doesn't start itchy, but begins to itch as it gets worse. I'm trying a new sunscreen with titanium & zinc oxide, so I'm hoping that will stop the PLME.

Strep with the scarlet fever rash is not itchy but does look like an allergic reaction. My dd has had it 3 times - little red bumps all over. She often doesn't even get the fever. The last time we went to the dr for it the dr even misdiagnosed her. Sent me home with benadryl. She had the rash all over her. No fever no red throat negative rapid strep. 2 days later they called with the results of the regular strep. Positive of course, unfortunatley I had already sent her to school as she said she felt fine.

As far as sunscreen goes, please allow me to put in my .02 cents. After having BC, I have been hyper aware of the products I am using and have tried to eliminate parabens from my life. The only sunscreen my family uses is Badger or California Baby. Neither have those harsh chemicals that may cause skin reactions, and using these products may help in preventing cancer. Burt's Bees brand is also paraben-free.

Saw your signature.... Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary coming up! :cheer2:

What do you look for to see if the sunscreen has parabens? I'm going to use the new Neutragena Baby which claims to be all natural. That's the one with titanium & zinc oxide, which I believe block light. What else should I be looking to avoid?

And congratulations on your upcoming anniversary! I wish you much good health in the future!

Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to celebrating!:yay:

Titanium should be avoided, zinc oxide is fine. You want to avoid parabens (i.e, methylparaben and others, check your shampoo bottles and I bet you'll see a long list of parabens), also avoid phthalates, and sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate. Also avoid sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol and phenoxyethenol.

Again, check out Badger brand, sold in supermarkets like Wegman's and Whole Foods, online at BalmWorks.com, or health food stores. California Baby is sold at Target but sells out quickly so you may want to look for it online. Just a warning that these sunscreens are thicker than the norm, and you will need to rub them in a little harder as it goes on looking white.

Target also carries a line of shampoo and soap for the kids that is chemical-free, it's their "Method" brand, be sure to check the labels. There is a 3-in-1 shampoo/soap/body wash in peach, and we use the Method green tea soap bars. I use Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner.

And, thank you for acknowledging my anniversary!
