First time flying -- Carry-on suggestions please

9 nights in carryons only is tight. You need a larger rollaboard, watch the weight as you have to lift it. use a smaller backpack for under seat and put all meds and electronics in that as you have a good chance of being required to check a larger carryon. finally, remember the 3-1-1 rules for all toiletries. No toothpaste, gel deoderants or hair products over 3oz size. All in one 1-qt ziplok bag.

I do a full week with just a backpack. Enough clothes for half the time and sleeping and do laundry halfway through. Last time I tried to put it in the overhead, the FA said it can go under the seat which is fine with me. If I want to stretch out, I pull it towards me.

First couple of times I used a 2 wheel rolling carryon and I thought it was a pain when I wanted to get food or go to the bathroom. The backpack lets me go hands free so it’s easier to carry food and I don’t have to keep the back on the floor in the bathroom.

What airline? Some airlines charge for bin bags.

OP hasn't flown. Make sure your drivers license or state ID is real ID compliant.

OP is applying for a passport..Don't buy an expensive bin bag unless it meets international standards.

Bags without wheels can fit more stuff.

I've never seen an airline weigh a carry on. It happens sometimes with budget airlines in Europe and Asia, but it's very rare. They'll have a box to check the size.

I've never used a suitcase that has a vacuum feature. You can try getting some cheap vacuum bags on Amazon to see if you like them.

I fly a lot and really like my Travelpro soft-sided luggage. I have both a carry-on and large checked bag, and they've held up for 10 years. If you plan on flying in Europe in the future, consider getting an international carry-on size.

A carry-on and backpack are plenty for 9 nights if you plan on doing laundry and can limit yourself to one pair of shoes. The only thing to keep in mind is the liquid limit in carry-on luggage if you have specific products you need to bring. Also, if you have a purse, it will count as a personal item, so make sure it fits in either the suitcase or backpack.

was hoping to avoid checking a bag. Trip is nine nights. I figured I'll be doing laundry.

I was thinking a bin bag and a back pack. Does that work?

Nine nights with a bin bag and a back pack will work if you are planning to do laundry.

DW and I made a number of 10 day on site WDW trips with a carry on bag and backpack each. We planned for a rest/laundry day in the middle of the trip.

I have never had my carry on measured or weighed. And only once in many trips have I had to gate check the bag due to a full plane. I always pack critical items in my backpack just in case. I will usually spend a few extra dollars for whatever "early boarding" option an airline has.

It has been a long time since I purchased a carry on so I can't help with current options. All I recall is that I found one that was on the upper end of the carry on size. DW has one that is on the smaller side. check with your airline for what size they set.

Good luck on your first flight!
