Well, from my experience working in the computer service industry, let me just say that nothing can ever be taken for granted. Some people are not as computer savvy as others and it is very difficult to troubleshoot a computer problem over the phone. You have to start at the basics and go from there. You might be surprised at the simple resolutions to some seemingly difficult problems.
For instance, I have been working in the computer service field since 1986, but I am not immune to doing stupid things with my own computer. One day at work I couldn't logon to our Lotus Notes system and had to place a call to our Technical Support department. After explaining my problem, it turned out that I didn't have the network cable attached! Needless to say, I was thoroughly embarrassed.
Try to put yourself in the other person's shoes. They are on the phone trying to understand what the problem is. They are not sitting right next to you looking at your computer.
onecoolmama...I told the guy a million times its not sasser, and he still wouldn't believe me. then when microsoft confirmed it wasn't sasser, he said..."uh huh...just what i thought"
I'm really getting angry now. I'm pass mad and annoyed. Why won't they listen to my words? I'm asking them one question and I SWEAR its like they are answering a completely different question.
PMd you but posting it here as well in case you see this first...
Here is what I found...
It seems that toshiba manufactured these machines with a known defect in which the CPU needs to be throttled back in order to keep the laptop from shutting down due to over heating. The cause of this issue is that Toshiba used a desktop CPU (Intel Pentium III) instead of a mobile CPU in these laptops. Toshiba's solution to the problem is a BIOS update which effectively throttles back the clock speed of the CPU and causes some issues with DVD playback. This defect is also present in the satellite 5505 series laptops.
In all cases where this happened (and there seems to be many) the BIOS upgrade solved the problem. Needs to be at least version 1.80
