I spent the day in the ER with my son today.

Ughhhhhhh.... I just talked to my mother and she said the same thing. In the ER they said he would have a fever if it was appendix. I wish they had drawn blood or done and abdomen CT now... His pediatrician isn't in her office on Wednesdays after noon but I am seriously thinking about calling her service and having her paged. I just don't want to be "that" parent who is freaking out because her kid has a stomach bug. I'm going to take his temp again, and if it is even slightly elevated I'm calling!

I am thinking the same thing. My DD had hers removed last year and she never ran a fever. She just had pain in her side and the was sick to her stomach. I would be sure to have it checked, just to make sure.

APPENDIX! That was my thought, too, even before I read the update. Testicular pain can actually be abdominal pain radiating to the testicles -- did they prod around on his belly area when he was there? Do any other exams to rule out appendicitis?

I've had appendicitis twice ... yup, twice :lmao:. First time ... a million tests, they couldn't figure out if it was or it wasn't, sent me home, and I got better. Second time ... they yanked it out! (an appendix can actually "go off" several times before becoming severely infected -- who knew?)

Appendicitis is the most difficult condition to diagnose -- tons of folks are sent home wihtout it being diagnosed properly (in my case, and maybe your son's case) and on the other hand, tons of folks get it taken out when it is fine. There are some tests they can do to be more sure (they need a white cell count and a CT scan for sure) but it's still damn hard to diagnose.

Mid abdominal pain near the belly button is classic for early stage appendicitis. Usually ti will eventually shift over to the right side, but for some people it never does. Also everyone has an appendix in a slightly different spot -- some people's appendixes are even in the middle or on the left! The moderate to severe pain (even if it's in the middle), vomiting, nausea, and positional-related pain are classic appendicitis signs. Fever may or may not be present, but white cell count is usually elevated.

In any case, he needs to be seen back at the ER ... now. And this might turn out to be a virus or something (fingers crossed!) but if I were you, I'd be fairly aggressive about making sure he gets that CT and any other test they can throw at him, becasue your little guy could get very very sick very fast if they misdiagnose this.

Best of luck to both of you and update us when you know more. Fingers crossed that it's a weird virus, but if it is his appendix and it's in the early stages -- not to worry, he'll be in and out of there and fully recovered from surgery in no time flat!

I think the term when a testicle gets twisted is "torsion". It can be dangerous, so hopefully that is not the problem!

Of course an appendix can be dangerous, too! :scared1:

OP, I hope your little guy is better soon! :wizard:

My brother had the twisted testicle, I do think torsion is the right word. If it was that I doubt it would get better on it's own. My brother's didn't it got worse and worse (misdiagnosed when he first went in) and he lost a testicle and the other one they didn't know if it would make it, but it did and he has 3 girls (whew!).

I am so hoping that the OP is at the hospital, helping her little one drink that yucky contrast solution, getting him a CT scan and being on the road to a quick, full recovery.

Thinking of you tonight and wishing your little guy the best of health!

I had my son in the ER two days in a row this summer, for the same problem. Turned out to be a Kidney stone. Your son is most likely too young for that, I hope he is ok. Funny though, childrens hospital never even did a urinalsyis or blood test on my son, which would have found blood in the urine, and saved me a 2nd trip to the ER (and $1800) the next day.

When my little guy was 5, we got sent home too. They thought he had a stomach bug. It was his appendix. He ended up with an infection and had to spend extra days in the hospital. I think it can be tricky for them to diagnose. Your son might need his appendix out, but he could have the flu or another bug. I would page your doctor and ask him or her. If he seems to be getting worse, than I would go back to the E.R. My son started with just stomach cramping, and then he had vomiting. He did not want to eat anything and was lethargic. I hope this helps. :grouphug:

Sending prayers it's nothing serious and your little one feels better soon. Goodl cuk and please keep us updated!

Hope your son is doing ok.Please give us an update when you can.

One of my girls has strep, so I'm just now getting on here - to the OP, I hope he's okay and that your at the ER/Doctor office! Thinking of your guy, hope he's okay! Let us know when you have a chance.

Good morning... just checking in to see how things are going. Not that you're obligated to get online, of course! I know how overwhelming the early days of a medical crisis can be... but I just wanted to let you know that we are still praying for your little guy.

:grouphug:

Been thinking about you -hope all is ok. Update us when you can.

I'm concerned about your son. I hope everything is alright. Please let us know when you get a chance.

Oh dear... I'm thinking that no updates today indicate that your little guy and you are still at the hospital. That's the best place to be sometimes.

May the Lord...

* grant the doctors wisdom
* guide and steady the hands of the surgeon
* give your son comfort and health
* bless you and your husband with peace and courage
* console your other son in his worries

Remember that you can call me any time. We've dealt with multiple CT scans, Picc lines, NG tubes, heart monitors, drains, surgeries, boredom and trying to sleep when the nurses come in all night. I'd be happy to "virtually" hold your hand through whatever you're going through.

Hi all....

Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers. We are doing ok. Spent some time at the hospital so we are all pretty exhausted. DS had bloodwork drawn, numbers were fine. Had ultrasound and CT, looked fine apparently. The pain started to get better and he was able to eat and drink and go to the bathroom fine. No more vomitting. We came home and have an appt w/ his primary tomorrow morning. He is still saying his belly hurts, mostly around his belly button area and a little to the right, but it is more of an ache than anything else though sometimes he says it is worse than others. He is taking tylenol so it is hard to say if he has a low grade temp or not. I don't know what to do.... he does seem to be feeling a bit better but I don't think we are seeing the big picture. I'm hoping his primary care doc can shed some light on this tomorrow.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, and especially you, VillageMama, for your concern and offers of support, they are truly appreciated!

Well, it is certainly a relief that his white blood cell count was normal and that the CT scan didn't show anything amiss. My son salutes your son for having to drink that yucky contrast. That was his least favorite part of the entire ordeal!

I'm sorry to hear that your guy is still not feeling well, though. I'm at a loss for what it could be. It sounds nutty but I'm always relieved to get an "official" diagnosis... even if it's bad. At least then there is a protocol to follow. Not knowing is so hard.

Hopefully your little trooper will get better and better each day. My son says to say that milkshakes are helpful.

My whole gang is still praying and rooting for your son. Thanks so much for the update and your note. Hopefully you all can get some sleep tonight!

:faint:

Been there, as a teen. and lost one. I felt the pain, a few different times over two or three years. it always went away... then the last time it did not.

they can do a stitch type procedure to "anchor them" to the sides.

hopefully it won't happen again.
