We are leaving on July 5th to WDW and Im stuck in a huge problem. I have a dog in which I absolutely adore and love. Problem is: No one is willing to take care of him. They are either busy or out the country. Also Ive called all of the kennel's in the yellow pages in my town and they are booked solid for the month of july. Also they ask for shots and I havent got the time yet [nor money] to let my dog take the rest of his shots. So what should I do????? Were driving down to Florida from NY and its going to be in the back of my head if I dont do something. It might even ruin my trip! Im stuck in a serious problem and is in desperate need of help. Any suggestions???

Does the dog travel well. WDW does have kennels. I don't know much about them, but I know they're there!!!

Use the Kennels at WDW. You will need to go and walk him several times in the day, but they are cheap! Also, he will need his rabies and Kennel cough shots to stay here as well.
Or find a hotel in Kissimee that allows pets and bring your own kennel. Good luck

WDW does have kennels but you will need to make sure your accomodations are pet friendly. Also, call ahead of time to see if the kennels require anything special. Like proof of certain vaccinations or kennel cough shot.

My mother books her dogs at a boarding facillity the minute she makes travel plans. It's something people sometimes overlook.

Have you called some vets? Some have boarding facilities or can recommend a pet sitter....or (and this is an iffy) if you are driving can you call and find out if there is a kennel along the way you could drop him off at? I know the Kennels at the parks you have to go walk the dog and they wont keep them over night. You might also want to check the Orlando area and see if they have something available.

Just a note about the WDW Kennels ... like any other kennels, they will require documentation that the dog has had its shots. Without that, the WDW Kennel won't take them either.

:earsboy:

I would also call the vets. Many times they can refer a pet-sitter. Or put an ad in the paper or flyer looking for a pet-sitter up at the grocery store or vet's office. Get the word or mouth out now.

I don't think bringing the dog to WDW would be the answer. I'm sure the kennels at WDW or even the Orlando area have rules concerning shots. Is it that the kennels are booked or your dog doesn't have all his shots? You really should look at finding a way to get him all his shots - they are important to his health.

Good luck.

I would explain your situation to the vet. If he has any kind of heart, he will give the dog the shots and let you pay him back in a month or two when the finances are a little better. I would then take the pooch with you and kennel him at WDW, or find a hotel that accepts pets. This way, you can stop to see him everyday. He'll (she'll) be happier, and so will you knowing you can see him everyday.

I thank God I have someone to take our dog when we go on vacation. Couldn't bear to kennel her. I understand your problem. Good luck, and hope things work out for you.

Do you know any college age people? Maybe you can get one to house sit and watch the dog. Often they want a way to be on their own and it will benefit both of you. Maybe you can offer to pay them and get food for the house.

First off all, how is that you can afford a trip during one the peak times of year at WDW but not the $30 to get your beloved dog his shots???

I am not trying to sound snippy, but please think about the reasons why dogs get vaccines. They don't just get them because kennels require them. They get them because the prevent them from getting potentially life threatening illnesses which could kill them or you (rabies is transferable to humans). If I could not afford the basic shots for my puppy, I would not be taking a trip, and if I had a trip planned before I got the puppy, I'd probably think about canceling it if I could not afford that plus my puppy's basic care. I'm not rich, not by any means, people here at the DIS can attest to my financial woes, but I can scrape up the cash for my dogs basic care ; if I had to, I'd even charge it. And I always have an emergency fund available, whether it's an empty credit card or my savings.

That said -- Shots cost about $30. AND -- There are also low cost clinics. You have a month. Find some way to get him his shots.

Next, have you checked with pet sitting services? Most of them will have people available to come by and check on your dog a few times a day. You are traveling during a very busy time of year. Kennels will be booked. Another option is to have him boarded at the vets. My trip is in Dec. and I already have my dog booked at his kennel. One of the responsibilities that comes with owning a pet is realizing that you can not do everything you want to without considering what you will do with the pet. Trust me, I'd much rather be able to have an extra $200 to spend on fun stuff at WDW than spending it on a kennel, but I think the joys I get from my dog more than make up for it and plus, that $200 assures me he is safe, happy and well taken care when I am away. In fact, we sometimes send our puppy on overnight trips to the kennel throughout the year, so he is aware of what the kennel is and he doesn't get scared when he goes. (He's a weird dog, he actually LOVES the place we send him. It's called Best Friends Pet Resort.

They have two centers in NY http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/centers.cfm#ny

You may have to drive a bit and they will require his shots. I suggest you get the shots for the dogs own health soon. Charge it if you must, or borrow the money from someone. Then check with Best Friends. You may have a drive to get to it, as I know NY is a large state. I drive over an hour to get to the one I go to. But it's worth it. The staff is professional, the rates are reasonable, and the dogs are kept in large enclosures with plenty of space for playing. They also have a large playroom where your dog can play for an extra fee (varies by state).

I suggest them because I have had good experiences, and also, their centers are HUGE.

Is your dog a puppy? What breed is he? I would never leave a young puppy home alone anyway, unless he was in a crate. You might want to try the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. http://www.petsitters.org/ Although, a good pet sitter is going to likely require basic shots as well.

I really hate to sound snippy, please do not take this the wrong way. But you really need to think long and hard about the responsibilities that come with owning a pet. You need to realize that there will be times when money, sometimes in great amounts, will need to be spent. $30 to $50 for shots and a checkup is not a lot to ensure the health of your dog. When traveling at busy times, you will need to reserve a sitter or a kennel far in advance. This will also cost you money. Pet sitters are cheaper than kennels, but both can be costly. I pay about $200 for a week when I go away. And there are other costs that come with owning a pet too, which I do hope you have taken into account.

I'm not trying to lecture you, but as someone who has worked with abandoned pets, the biggest reason I saw why people ditched their pets was because they did not bother to take into account how much $$ a dog would cost them before getting one.

As someone said, you could always try to take him with you, but be aware you will need his shots for airline travel, plus a travel safe crate and the kennel at WDW is $$$ and going to likely require the same shots as a kennel at home.

I just noticed you say you are driving.

Call kennels in other states along the way. You'll still need to get the shots.

Another thing you should know is that GOOD vets offices have vet techs who can issue the shots and give you the paperwork. You usually do not even need a regualr office visit.

Drive part of the way and drop the dog off at a kennel along your route and pick him up on the way back.

I would start asking friends and/or friends of friends/family if they have a HS or college age student willing to come over daily, for a nice fee, to pet sit. Or maybe an older person on your block that is home all day and would welcome the chance to help out. Our maltese will be born some time this week and we are picking him/her up in September. My family takes about 3-4 trips a year and this was a major factor for us getting/not getting the dog. We waited for about 2 years and until our 2 children were older but we are finally ready to make the commitment. We have already asked my sil to sleep over our house at night and my in-laws to watch the dog during the day when we are away. They agreed. I also have lots of family around to help out. Anyway, I would try to look in your own neighborhood not just with close family and friends.

Actually, there are some shots (at least one) which are not generally given at a regular checkup, but are required in order to kennel your dog. Maybe that's what the poster was referring to when talking about getting the dog's shots? (that's how I took it anyway). I know when I looked into kennling our dog, who was current on all his routine vaccinations, I was told there was an additional vaccination he would need in order to stay at the kennel.

Yes. It is a shot for kennel cough and it does not just prevent the dog from getting sick at kennels, it prevents him from getting kennel cough from another dog, period. Wherever he is.

Kennel cough is usually passed dog to dog when many dogs are together in one place, such as a kennel. But it can also be passed dog to dog from contact with a dog who has it. It's rare, but why risk it?

I can help you with kenneling, but you're still going to have to get the shots. I know after the amount I pay for my dog to be kenneled I don't want a dog with no shots, NEAR my dog.

Okay, In Orlando, Do you know the walmart? Do you use it? There may be another I dont know. But if you turn the corner on the left side of teh walmart and keep going down there is a nice little kennel called Bass Pet Motel. We have a cocker Spaniel and it was $14 a day. $12 smaller, $16 for larger. And for one on one play time (or with other dogs is u request it) it was $3. We called from the parks to make sure she was doing well and they said she was doing great and we shouldn't come see her because it will get her all that more excited and then we leave again. If your pet stays 5 days or more they charge a, I think its $15 bath/grooming fee. They do this on the last day though, Ironicly. LOL

Our bill was about $171.00 and we stayed 10 days. Not bad IMO.
It also saved about $32 because she would have had to been boarded at home for 2 days, during traveling.

This placed worked out PERFECT because it was right by the walmart where we get "stuff" for the trip. Oh! And if you have budgeted souvies be sure to get your pet a collar or mickey tag or something, my dog was so excited when I brought her souvies in!

Sorry this post is so long. But I hope it helped! Here is the Bass Pet Motel website. We booked a month before we went and had no problem.

We brought Monty dog back more presents than we brought back for humans!

We actually got him a Disney Dogs bowl, a Pluto tin with treats inside, a Pooh & Tigger leash and collar set, a Mickey radial tire chew toy, some Mickey Bone chew toys, and a bandana that reads : My Human went to WDW and all I got was this Lousy Bandana.

:)

There are many vets in our area that have larger runs. One in particular is an old country vet that mainly works on horse's. We have used him many times to board our dog. He just keeps him in one of the stalls for the horses. We take his bed and his toys, and he has plenty of room to roam around. And they walk him around so he doesnt "potty" in his room. I am sure you would be able to find a vet like that in your area. I know when we went to Maui he kept the dog for 12 days and the total was $98.00. Keep in mind I supplied the food.

Not trying to start a debate on whether or not to get the shot, regardless of whether you are kenneling your dog. My point was simply that, unless you are looking into a kennel, you may not even know about this shot. I was never aware of it until I started looking into using a kennel while we went away- my vet never mentioned it when we took our dog in for his regular shots & check up. So, in my reading of the original post, I came away with the impression that this was the poster's situation - not necessarily that they were not taking their dog for any of his routine shots. Even once I learned of this additional shot, it was never suggested that I get it for our dog even if we were not planning on using a kennel. So, someone may be taking their pet in for all of their routine care, and be under the impression that they are doing everything they should for their pet, and still be faced with a situation where they have to make another vet's appointment to get another shot once they inquire about a kennel.

I can understand your panic. We have 2 cats and a dog... and no relatives near us anymore. We've always found a neighbor to pet-sit for us or traded pet-sitting services with friends (which didn't go that well the last time. We came home to some seriously upset cats because the access to their catbox was closed, leaving them no choice but to do their business elsewhere. I spent days after airing, cleaning and sanitizing, and detraumatizing my cats.) I wish I would've paid for a kennel!

When we went to WDW DH didn't go along so no searching for someone. Except a couple weeks before our vacation, we found a kitten and needed to be bottle-fed. DH wasn't going to be able to care for her! And most of the neighbors schedules wouldn't allow it either. Then I thought of a neighbor in my sons class that would be perfect so I asked her parents. She was so excited to be able to care for the baby-kitten! I was going to pay her but then remembered we were going to WDW.. I bought her a nice necklace from WDW instead. She was thrilled! She still comes by daily to check on "her" kitten. It's so cute. :)

Anyway, explore all your options. Sometimes it is just easier to go the kennel route.
