I Need to Lose Weight

1) Nobody can be bribed to lose weight. When you are ready it will happen and not one minute before.

2) Those frozen dinners are not good for you. Try cooking your foods.

3) Diet soda actually stimulas your desire for sugars. When I stopped drinking soda my chocolate cravings decreased.

4) Is this the Grandmother who lives in the house that your Dad owns?

5) I know you do not want to hear this but move out. Your eating could be a direct result of your extremely unusual family life.

You are young, take it form an old lady who has struggled with her weight her whole life, you are doing MORe damage by eating this way. You body is going to go into defense mode, and start storing fat.

That is why when we lose weight, we almost always gain MORE back. I was "pleasantly plump" at your age, I also had a family who harrassed me about my weight. I am now 40 years old and grossly obese. Most of the weight gain was from being on a very high dose of prednisone for years, but still, I thought I could stave myself to lose weight.

WW is a great program that is motivational, and it TEACHES you why you actually NEED to eat.

Better than WW though, is I found I could see a nutrionist through my Doctor's office. Just in the 1st visit, I learned soooo much! She explained the importance of keeping my blood sugar level EVEN throughout the day, and how to do it. (this is huge in curbing that hungry feeling)

There are so many programs out there, just make sure you are making a LIFESTYLE change, and not looking for a quick fix...never works.

As someone who lost 37 pounds, I can't help but repeat what others have said. You need to get on a program where you learn to eat a BALANCED diet, and start tracking what you eat!

You also have to learn to read labels very carefully, and learn portion sizes. This is almost impossible without a kitchen scale.

There is no such thing as "good" and "bad" food, just too much of certain types of food. Some of the thinest, healthiest people I know will eat dessert- but not every day, and never a whole restaurant sized portion. I've split a dessert (frozen mocha cake. yum) with 5 people and still had some left over.

There are just so many hints to cut down calories painlessly (frozen sweets take longer to eat, for instance) and increase your intake of fresh vegetables.

There's no way to do it alone. You need a support group, even if it's only online.

And, you will ot lose any significant weight until you start moving more. Exercise is your friend, and walking is a good place to start. Just get a good pair of walking shoes, something to listen to, and you're all set. :)

I understand that Weight Watchers has an on-line program so you don't even have to go to the meetings.

I would also recommend that you eat more protein. It will help fill you up and keep you from getting too hungry between meals.

1) Nobody can be bribed to lose weight. When you are ready it will happen and not one minute before.
I'm not being bribed. I do want to lose weight.
2) Those frozen dinners are not good for you. Try cooking your foods.
I do cook. I cook a lot actually. If you read all of my posts, you'd know that I cook a considerable amount, at least on my days off. The frozen meals I do eat are the better ones, like Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers. Considering I always go in to work around dinner time, or work right through dinner time, it is necessary for me to eat frozen meals several times a week.
3) Diet soda actually stimulas your desire for sugars. When I stopped drinking soda my chocolate cravings decreased..
I drink one soda a day. Chocolate cravings will never go out of my system.
4) Is this the Grandmother who lives in the house that your Dad owns?.
I don't see why which grandmother it is would matter. :confused3
5) I know you do not want to hear this but move out. Your eating could be a direct result of your extremely unusual family life.
Stop changing every thing I post as a "move out" argument.

For all of you that are telling me to join a support group I did join the peeps thread. They are a very nice group of girls, and are pretty much what I was looking for as far as support goes.

Hmmm ... I thought that mickeyfan2 had a lot of good supportive advise. You said that your grandmother is trying to bribe you to lose weight. She said that people can't be bribed. Supportive. You said in your OP that you drank A LOT of soda, not just one per day. She was just trying to show you how even diet soda can sabotage a diet. Supportive. You do eat a lot of frozen dinners and cooking is better. Plus, you LEARN more about foods if you have to cook them yourself. Her advise was right on and supportive.

Now, the bit about grandma and moving out ... maybe not so supportive. However ... you won't gain full control over your life (and your weight and your self worth, etc) until you do move out. You will feel so much better once you do! It will be a great weight off your shoulders and you will be able to concentrate on yourself and not your family dynamics.

Supportive or not, most of mickeyfan2's posts towards me have been condescending, so I'm not exactly overjoyed to se her "advice" here, especially when some of it is just jabs at me, and not advice at all.

I can understand that. I think I would recommend a support site OFF the DIS for that very reason.

Glad to hear that you are still working on it! Good for you! I am sure that you will find a program that is right for you. I understand having a crazy schedule--I do, too--and it is not always easy to eat as well-balanced as you might like. I have just learned to cook double...I just double the recipe and then when I have a night where I can't cook, I have something home-made ready to go. Just pop it in the micro and I'm good.

I have a posse here on the WISH boards that are literally dragging my no-longer-quite-so-fat as s through this weight loss thing! :lmao: :rotfl2: Here's hoping you can find a group that really works for your needs. :goodvibes

That's a good start. Now, you have to find a eating program where you can track your intake, INCLUDING making sure that you get all of the nutrition you need. Salads are good, but a whole of plate of steamed (nonstarchy)vegetables will make you feel full faster, without the temptation to drown them in fatty salad dressing. Sprinkle a little grated cheese or butter flavoring on them, or try a little garlic salt.

And unless you're just forgetting to write it down, you aren't drinking nearly enough water. The combination of water and fiber will make the pounds slip off faster, and you really will feel lighter. ;) That Vita water, at 100 calories, should be replaced with plain water and a multivitamin. If it has those calories, they're probably some sort of sugar in it. If you must drink it because you like it, use it to replace dessert.

Have you looked at low fat /low salt soups? They're good for a quick hot meal, and because they take longer, they can be more satisfying.

How about making a sandwich with Healthy Choice type meats, lettuce, sliced tomato, low fat sliced cheese, low fat mayo, and put it in 1/2 of a whole wheat pita? Add some carrot sticks, and Quakers cheese puffs (they're like mini ricecakes) and you'll satisfy that craving for salt and crunchiness.

As others have stated, you can cook meals ahead of time, and freeze individual portions for work nights, as long as no one else in your house eats them.

Maybe you could get a dorm refrigerator with a small freezer compartment and keep it in your room? That way you could keep diet jello (very low in calories) low fat cool whip (10 calories), and diet pudding for late night sweets cravings. You can also keep bottled water there, which will encourage you to drink more.

I think this is a great idea considering the OP has had problems with members of her family raiding her food. I would recommend that you buy your own Ziplock/Glad disposable containers to keep your food in. They are cheap and can go in the microwave.

I was milling around on here and found your post on wanting to lose weight. so first off Good Job on wanting to be healthy:thumbsup2 . I'm 24, and except for when I was really little and like a day when I was 12 I have always been heavy. I like who I am as a person so my weight has never ruled me. That being said I decided to lose weight because my family has a history of medical problems and I did not want to deal with them. I do Weight Watchers and really really love it. They have message boards on their website that anybody can join. The people are super nice over there. Sometimes (I know I'm going to get flagged for this, but ah whatever) I feel that some people on some of these boards can get caddy and point fingers (not everybody just some). Nobody in your life be it on here or in your everyday life should make you feel bad about this. This should be about you and nobody else!!! People need to lay off with 'oh you need to move out' ect, ect! Do this for you and nobody else.
I like ww, but it may not be for you. I like it because it's simple to follow and gives you wonderful guidelines on how to eat healthy, but like I said it may not be for you. Anyways
I really just wanted to say great job on deciding to do this. If you ever want to talk PM and I'll give you my e-mail address. Also you may want to check out
www.hungry-girl.com great recipes, just a fun website
or www.dwlz.com <--- tons of info on ww.

Gook luck!!! and great job!!!!:cheer2:
